I am a beginner with the hiking and adventuring. This trail was beautiful and was more than just a path. Lots of rock steps and inclines. It was not easy for me, but the accomplishment felt great. We went on a cold rainy January, so it was slippery but well worth it!

Awesome First Day hike! Parked in the equestrian lot and followed the blue ribbons and signs for Flat Rock until they stopped. Picked up the yellow blaze trail and followed that to where it meets 5 other trails and then continued on to Flat Rock. Loved the wooden bridge over the creek. The sand springs made the water crystal clear. The last trek is very steep and rocky. Once you get to the overlook you forget all about it. It was one of the best views I've seen in PA. Took the blue blaze trail back until it met with the red Lehman trail. Crossed the creek in two places using rocks and then a nice clear path until it joined back to the 5 trail point. Took the Flat rock back to the yellow blaze and back to the parking area. 7 mile's total going that way. It was well worth the 2 hour drive!

Nice trail. Steep start but don’t be deterred it levels off. Massive amounts of water on the trail right now

Clean trail, lots of scenic overlooks with pretty little waterfalls.

I enjoyed it very much. Did it about a month ago. There is actually a trial that runs closer to the water just at the beginning which I chose. It is about 1 mile long and merges back again with the main one. No traffic at all, saw just one couple at the very end. Liked the water and corn fields.

The middle ridge trail is awesome. Overall good state park!

We chose this hike since we were staying at the campground. It is a square and 3/4 of the sides are dirt access roads. Boring. The other side is a hike up a hill, straight up with no switchbacks. The marked trail went up the hill in what felt like a rock filled stream bed. I wish I had my poles for this portion. Lots of hunting in this area, wear orange in the fall.

The way I hiked, this was an out and back trail, not a loop. Followed temporary signs for Flat Rock Trail and parked in the upper lot by the horse area. The spur trail from the parking area to the rattlesnake trail is marked with blue ribbon. No indication where the trail joins the yellow blazed Rattlesnake Trail. Several other hikers were confused at this junction. Follow the yellow blazed trail, it winds in a circle until you find a sign pointing towards Flat Rock Trail. Lots of people on the trail on a Sunday afternoon in November but it didn’t feel overcrowded. Beautiful view from the top.

The trail was difficult but enjoyable and looked very beautiful in the fall! However because of all the recent rain the trail was extremely muddy and the streams were hard to cross. I would not recommend bringing a dog on the hike, as there are two large stream crossings that might be hard for them. The trail was well marked as long as you were paying attention.

Spectacular views of Cumberland Valley for only a moderate amount of work. Trails from Colonel Denning SP are well marked and maintained and easy enough for families and dogs. Extensions and loops provide adventure for the more adventure-seeking hiker. Kudos to builders of the nice new Flat Rock access trail at park trailhead.

Not a bad trail system. Only real views are along the power line part. But since this area is designed for x-country skiing you have wide, well marked trails.

Went out yesterday about about 930 am and no one was there. Good trails. Don't miss the turn at the top of the trail though. The down hill was pretty technical but definitely do-able. Beware of the hunting/hunters

rocky but fairly flat on the combined pink and light blue trail blaze. It was midday, lots of poison ivy so keep to trail unless covered well for bush whacking lol. I heard the rush of water from creek along my left side just a few bird calls not many sounds. Damp terrain some slippery rocks, iavoided any hilly areas, used walking stick for support. Good place for some reflective walking. Did see about a handful of people along the way.

Much of the hike is along a busy highway. There are definitely more peaceful options in the area.

Fun trail

I'm glad I took others advise and started on the other side of the bridge. First 4 miles are pretty hard. The last 3 are easy. Nice hike though. A lot of diversity. Woods, fields, cropland, hills, and valleys. I will probably do this one again.

Was hard, but we loved it. The vista made it worth the work. Took our 9 year old and he rocked it.

we turned around on the very steep hike to the rusted machinery. when you hit the stone bridge do not walk across it. go straight. we went over the bridge and had to find our way back onto the trail.

We did this trail on Saturday. The last time was about 3 years ago. They've done an amazing job building steps around the water cistern, where it used to be really slippery. There's also evidence of work in other places, including a reroute to include a switchback to replace a formerly steep section. I'm told this is the work of Tom Scully and his rock crew. Great job!!

A few caveats. Much of Col. Denning State Park is closed for renovations. The parking lot just across from the camp was closed, I think because camp is still in session. To park, you have to go into the park and go to the far north end to park. Then, you walk to the south end of the park and find either the lower blue blazed trail or the upper trail, both of which intersect with the trail to Flat Rock.

If you haven't done this hike lately, you should.

Hard trail as the incline is steep but a lot of fun! View is spectacular! I use to hike this in college with my roommates and team mates. We always enjoyed it!

Trails were poorly marked.

Many thanks to Kelle Zimmer for recommending going in reverse! It was my first more challenging hike and glad I didn’t hit those hills on the 2nd half.

We did a short part of trail. Was beautiful even though we got a little lost and it rained! Wear sturdy shoes and note that areas can be wet.

Great challenging hike. Got there late and had to book it up to the outlook before sun down, which is NOT a good idea. Large incline in a small amount of distance. Take your time, plan accordingly. Only thing is was we got the lookout at around sundown and there was a timber rattlesnake den about 50 yards before the lookout on the trail. Saw about 6-7 in a span of 10 feet, which is what we could see. Lots of ledges, and downned logs for them. Those suns of guns were rattling at us and we couldnt even see them. Very nerve wracking to go back through that in the dark, but yet it made you feel so alive. Remember NEVER jump away from a rattlesnake. They have heat pits that can sense if there is 1/10th of a degree change to their surroundings. & they can only attack/lunge at you when they are coiled, be cautious and safe, or as my friend said before we headed back "Stay frosty"

This was my second hiking and yes it was tough being a newcomer. It's a steep hike of 3 mile with an awesome view in end. Then downhill was quick. Please take bug repellent. Overall very nice adventurous , good view, marked properly. Only go if you are fine with tough uphill hike. This is not a simple one unless you are one of my buddy who was running uphill 1500ft.

Kids we too short to get across wire bridge water was too high to go over log that others had suggested. Seemed great just wanted to FYI (We did know it was marked hard) this was near start of trail.

Very well marked now that you have a new start/end point. Rocky uphill climb but the views at the top are definitely worth it!
