this Trail is pretty much all uphill with a few breaks and not any switchbacks and is out and back ...completed this hike not very many stops in about 3. my recommendation is to bring good traction shoes with trekking poles especially going back down if you reach the top of Castle Peak. A lot of loose Rock. I would definitely go again but with someone who was more adventurous and would be willing to stop to take some pictures. stunning views but be ready for sudden changes in weather especially going in October/ November

Off road for about 2 miles to get to trailhead so you need clearance. I saw some civics at parking lot. Great quick and intense hike with a great Shasta view once at the top. I recommend this hike to anyone. Lots of rocky portions where the trail is scaling over pure 4 foot boulders. Still pretty easy even with snow.

Extremely rocky at points, a little tough to navigate with two pups, but with incredible views the entire hike. The steady incline was challenging but subtle enough I hardly noticed it. With the snow I could have easily lost the trail, except that other hikers had worn the path well. Great hike.

Great hike with some amazing views!

got this one knocked out right as it started to snow on November 21. I wish I had known that you are able to drive in the first 1.5 or so miles past the gate. Also checked out Andesite Peak on the way back.

A tough, but rewarding hike with an amazing view!

Phenomenally beautiful views from the peak, but significantly longer and more difficult than listed!

trail running

Beautiful weather! I trail ran/hiked this peak in 3 hours. Ran the flat non-rocky parts and hiked the steepest parts. This is a well marked trail and there were a lot of people (and dogs) on the trail. The waterfall was partially frozen as were some of the little stream crossings. There was patching snow on the trail above the tree line just before I reached the summit. It was easily avoidable and didn’t bother me at all in my running shoes. Didn’t see a summit box, but there was a USGS summit marker on a large rock. Great trail. Would do this one again. November 17, 2018.

A difficult hike that is worth the steep climb. As other reviews indicate, the trailhead is not marked...there's a small parking area next to the USFS gate. Follow the water tank access road to begin the hike and follow the trail up. Wear high ankle boots as the climb can be loose at times. You will come to a large meadow/ridge line that will take you toward the peak. Look for a cairn to lead you to the final ascent to Rifle. Spectacular views of Tahoe from the top

The map indicates the wrong road approach to the trailhead. It involves a dangerous rail crossing and private property "no trespassing" signs. The correct approach to the trailhead is from the Everitt Highway. See guidebooks for the safe roads.

My cousin and I went on this trail a couple of months back. We drove our car maybe a mile when we realized that there was no trailhead(Only reason for not giving it 5 stars. Need more markers). The climb was steep so I'd definitely rate it hard but the views were beautiful. It took us about 4.5 hours to complete the hike stops and all.

PSA: the gate from horse meadows trail head is closed to vehicles for the season.

Awesome awesome

Worth the view! but definitely tough. This was 8.2 miles total and pretty steep for most of it. Going back down is easy but I would say this is more hard then Moderate.

Great hike with a solid amount of elevation gain. The hike is 8 miles round trip with 2800 feet of elevation gain. You start winding your way through beautiful forest and emerge to views of Sierra at Tahoe (a local ski resort). After crawling up a steep section the trees begin to thin and eventually you emerge to unbelievable views. You can see more lakes and mountains than you will know what to do with. Have fun and be safe. This is a nice trail all the way to the top, not too rocky and lots of good footing.

great loop

This loop is best clockwise. it took me 4hrs30min. It took just under 2hrs to summit freel. 30 min from freel to jobs sister. and 50min from jobs sister to jobs. the hike down jobs to the road is 45 min, and a 15 min walk back to the car. I am in better than average shape, 30 years old, and would rate this hike a 6 or 7 out of ten for difficulty. This was a solo mission for me, but I do not recommend others go solo without some previous experience in the mountains. also, alltrails says 11.4 miles, and strava said it was 9.5miles. best views in all of Tahoe!

I’ve done this hike many times, and it’s always great. Parking on Mission is free.

Time this trail accordingly as it will be covered in snow during winter/spring. This is my go to place for hiking. Its a nice hike with shaded trees. There is a nice resting spot next to a waterfall. The views are stunning looking over Reno and of course Lake Tahoe. Recommend doing this hike in light summer/fall for the best weather.

Great trail, however this is 4.1 miles each way (value from iWatch plus two trail guides) not the 6.5 stated here!

Great hike with great views. The last mile is a bit of a climb but well worth it.

Beautiful hike this time of the year. The weather was great and helped with the steady climb to the top. Enjoyed it a lot ! Short and moderate hike.

Gotta love loop hikes! Even without the trip to the summit this is an excellent hike. Take the brand-new Tahoe Rim Trail section from the top of the waterfall for an added workout (instead of dropping into the valley before getting to the junction that leads to the top of Mt. Rose) (on this map).
Also, be aware that there is a new cut-off from the "Rest Stop to Relay" trail to the Relay Peak Trail at about .7 miles from the trailhead. (NOT on this map, or the one at the trailhead)). You'll still get where you're going, but it's a little confusing.

my pup and i did this hike, definitely not easy but so worth the views at the top. no trail head but reviews before helped in getting there. the one thing i missed was at the top before the peak, theres stacked rocks on your right side that shows the trail to the peak. i missed it and had to back track. was to busy admiring the views i had. the hike for sure gives you a work out, but can't say enough how worth it for the view.

Great hike. We cut it short before Job’s peak. Definitely do this clockwise. Going up from Job’s to Job’s sister and up the east side of Freel would definitely be worse than down.

Great hike about 4 hours total. There is no trailhead. You hike along a water tank access road and pick up the trail from there. There are some steep inclines with loose ground so wear shoes with grip. Bring plenty of water. About a third of the way up, there is a beautiful ridge/meadow ride that to the peak.
