I just did the first peak. it took about an hour up and an hour back. pretty empty trail starting at 6:30 on a Wednesday morning. I only saw 4 other people the whole time. The trail was a little muddy, but not as bad as I expected from other reviews....not sure when it last rained hard. I wore my old running shoes and did just fine with them.

Easy walk, but usually very crowded, which isn't fun IMHO. The views are pretty, but doesn't make it worth freaking with the amount of people.

Pretty views, and great whale sighting during the season. Definitely a walk as the path is well paved (moms with strollers jog this all the time). Great for anyone that needs an even surface.

We love this hike! We do it whenever we come home. It's not good to do when it's hot and the there's a lot more erosion between the railroad ties than there used to be. The view at the top is pretty and the breeze is relaxing. My kid has been able to do this hike since he was 5.

I really enjoyed this hike. Nice incline, plenty of roots to grasp on, and rope climbs. The route was quite muddy from rainfall but spectacular views. I would recommend good footwear for climbing and scaling the walls. Beyond the first peak, I'd recommend a love for heights! Great time!

If you want to climb the sides of waterfalls and hike thru the jungle, look no further.

We cut out the crater by taking the shortcut, because the summit was socked in with clouds when we went. Just be ready for a long hike -- especially if you plan on doing the whole thing.

We parked outside the golf course entrance on the side of the road and then walked to the start of the trail down the road leading to the golf course.

One of the best trails I've hiked in Hawaii! Starts relatively gradual, but gets steep the closer you get to the top! Most people only do the first peak, but for the extra challenge it's fun to knock out the second and third peaks as well!

My girlfriend and I would like to do this hike on 5/6 or 5/7. If their is someone available to guide us that is familiar with the hike, we will be open to paying. Email me at onefastcobra@gmail.com. Thank you.

A fun quick hike, the stairs at the topi are killer but well worth the view from the top!

Short easy hike. Go early to avoid large crowds.

The trail is extremely muddy right now. I would keep an extra pair of shoes/towell in your car for the ride home. Bug spray wouldn't hurt.t was a very beautiful hike.

Good hike for beginners. Nice view at the top.

The scenery on the trail is amazing but be prepared for a lot of hikers. People wearing flip flops should reconsider their footwear so as not to slow others down. Safety is key !

nice hike wentduringa misty rainy day perfect for the look of the mountains very Jurassic like Trail well worth the hike

Aloha! I do various guided hikes with photos on Oahu. I hike often/weekly. Likely hiking this Tuesday and this weekend. Possibly other days as well. Feel free to check out some examples of photos on my instagram @mike.karas. You can message me there or at mikekarasphotography@gmail.com

This post should take away many of the rumors you might have heard with this hike!

Narrow and a packed. Don’t mind the being packed but the narrow trail was annoying.

Great ! Really easy, you can use stroller and is very easy for kids, beautiful view.

Awesome views. Quite tiring not so much the difference but from the scaling. One of the best trails in Ohau.

Very challenging. Between the thick mud, wading thru the water and climbing the slippery rocks, you'll definitely find the challenge you are looking for. We went the entire route, up through all 3 beautiful falls to the crater ridge and around. (Fortunately there are ropes on the more challenging areas.) Beautiful view of the island at the top. We then came down a different trail to avoid climbing back down thru the water falls. Again, extremely muddy but wow, what a hike! A big beer is a definite must at the end!!

LOVE this hike! the views are breathe taking! not much else to say that hasn't already been said.

Good steady incline with a lot of great view opportunities. Great birding in the morning

feels like your smack dab in the middle of the jungle, what an awesome hike, jumping off a cliff was the best part, A+

Easy first hike!

This hike/walk is PAVED the whole way— you can use a stroller!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been on several “kid friendly” trails on O’ahu and they were all disasters and (to my knowledge) this is the only ***stroller friendly*** hike/uphill walk I have discovered so far! It is very well maintained with beautiful scenery and stopping points throughout. The only issue you might encounter is limited parking.

Almost on the top, there is a way on the right side, you can see the lighthouse really near.

You can find the tide pools too.

It is an arduous upward hike but the fellow hikers make it fun.

Great views. Took about 45 minutes to make it to the top. Easy hike but too crowded

I’ll climb the stairs Wed, April 11th for the 239th time.

The most recent post on my Instagram @Hawaii_Mountain.Man.Matt will give you an idea for an impactful photo perspective.

5 things you should know about the hike:

(1) It is the safest way to reach that elevation on Oahu.

Over the last 70+ years, no one has ever died falling on the stairs*.

(2) There is a ton of trash at the top.

Bring a folded heavy-duty trash bag to help with that.

(3) No matter what, don’t go near homes!

Think: when is the last time you woke up at 3am and whispered: "Honey I think there's someone outside the house!"

Two people have recently been shot on the street by a high powered air rifle fired near the intersection of Kuneki and Makena. That was wrong of the shooter, but also not surprising.

(4) The back way is more dangerous, but worth considering.

Near the base of the stairs, there is one unmarked Honolulu Police Department vehicle roaming to catch hikers.

After the November 12th escape of killer Randall Saito from the mental facility behind the neighborhood, security is on best behavior using off-road vehicles to apprehend hikers.

On a usual morning, a roving HPD officer, a stationary guard and two roving guards secure the area.

The penalty has some variables, but here are the components:

(1) $1,000 fine
(2) Jail, no longer than 6 months. (incarnation is rare)
(3) Legal fees (a defense attorney charges $800 - $1,500 for the case)
(4) Usually 80 hours of community service.
(5) Legal fees for expungement.
(6) Visa/Immigration hurdles
(7) Impact on professional life.
(8) Return travel and accommodations to attend court, community service, etc.

The setback ranges from $3,000 for simple cases, up into the hundreds of thousands over the length of a career for military members reduced in rank, folks who lose their security clearance or a professional license, etc.

Going up the front way, as amazing as it is, is not worth playing Russian roulette with the penalty, so don’t “just risk the ticket”.

Have a plan

Tip:

‘Three routes through the bamboo forest’ would be where I’d be if I were looking to catch you. Just saying.

It's a short but hard hike. It isn't dangerous and a nice hike. Must-do in Oahu.
