Great hike for those looking for a panoramic view of San Diego from central county and a look at one of the coolest boulders you're probably likely to see in San Diego county. Just mind your pace on the way up if you are new to hiking. The rock steps up are not to be underestimated
hike up was somethin serious but beautiful views. i need some chips to recoop
Great walk, great sights...
Not crowded on a Thursday morning, great hike to get your heart rate up. Not too rocky, able to run down.
Easy to follow, well maintained, rock steps built in to steeper sections
DO NOT HIKE THIS WITHOUT CRAMPONS AND POLES RIGHT NOW. I just got back from attempting this trail. The initial Mist Trail portion of the loop is closed because of rockfall, and the John Muir trail switchbacks they direct you to instead are made of ice-covered mounds of snow. I watched a woman with yaktrax and poles slip on a switchback, fall off the side of the trail, and slide 100 feet down to the next trail crossing. I also fell and broke a pole on ice-covered snow. Everyone’s fine, but it was basically impassable. The last week of hot days + freezing nights has solidified the snowfall into ice. That said, everything leading up to that was absolutely gorgeous and jaw-dropping. I will definitely be coming back in summer.
Very difficult in my opinion. I’ve done Volcan and Cuyamaca. This tops those 10x
My legs are tired and skins a bit burnt. I'd rate this moderate to hard. the incline seemed to never stop. Its almost all sun exposed. The park was beautiful, decently clean bathrooms and trail heads were marked. The trail was maintained, had appropriate signage and was clean! On a Tuesday afternoon, we felt the crowd was pretty minimum allowing for good social distancing. The access to the chip is a little sketchy. You have to jump from one big Boulder to the chip and then jump back or slide down the rock. This deterred many people, but it wasn't that bad after you do it. Definitely wear shoes with good traction, lots of water, snacks and sunscreen. enjoy!!!
Almost no one on the trail at 11:30 am on a Tuesday. Bring plenty of water as there is very little shade on a hot sunny day. Beautiful views going up and at the top!
Trail is in good condition and easy to follow. unable to find a summit marker around the buildings/towers at the top. Came early on a Monday and there was no wait for pictures on potato chip rock. Overall, great hike and great trail! Start early and bring plenty of water if going in hotter months.
Definitely not as hard as some of these comments say it is. Went the day after the park received 2-4 in of snowfall and it was completely doable. Views were spectacular and overall a great time. Bring micro spikes and you’re chillin.
Awesome hike!
beautiful. great workout. bring a snack, i got hungry lol
Lot's of people (without masks) even though we started right at 6:30am when the park opens. Otherwise solid, as always. Perfect temp today. Ignore my recordi
Perfect hiking day! Made a 12.6 mile loop of it by going down the east side to highway 67, then returned via the Fry Koegel Trail.
So close to sub 90 minutes. Oh well
Alltrails please do a map that shows winter route. Snow was easy to walk on in the morning but after the sun came up in got really slippery. Definitely recommend crampons. You can rent them from REI in Fresno.
