Pretty tough with the ice. Definitely bring micro spikes, makes a huge difference.

Pretty slick and snowy, but well worth it.

This has been rebuilt and much steeper than before!!! Trail is going from rock step to rock step and kinda like doing high hurdles... lifting each foot up high but worth it

Great first hike of 2019! I really recommend microspikes as it is slick and icy.

Need spikes right now on this one.

Challenging climb but worth it!

The road was closed about a mile from the trail head but we expected that. It was such a great hike! Definitely dress warm for this time of year and bring good snow shoes. The water was beautiful through the ice and thick trees! I am so excited to see this place in the spring and summer!

Plenty of scenic views and vistas along this 1.8 mile one way/3.6 mike in/out trail. Hiked it due to RMNP being inaccessible during the government shutdown. Trailhead parking on the side of the highway 5.8 miles south of Estes Park was pretty full. Nice gradual climb the first half, then pretty steep climbs the second half after “the turn”. We started at 1:15pm and got to the rock scramble at 3:15 and turned back due to time and pending darkness. Packed snow most of the 2nd half up. Made this video from the hike: https://vimeo.com/311379986

Rangers recommmended that I did not go up the royal arch without micro spikes! Flat irons loop was icy and snowy as it is!

a challenging hike especially if you’re not used to the elevation. Incline right away and pretty much the whole time, but definitely worth it.

Definetly the hardest hike I’ve been on, bring lots of water and a small snack. If you’re from the Midwest like myself be prepared for the elevation difference, lots of yawns.

I accidentally ended up on this trail after starting the flatirons loop and losing my way, and I'm so glad I did! The trail was definitely a bit challenging, by the time I was near the top I was asking people coming down how far it was. The incline is pretty steep for the first majority of the hike, but as you near the end the trail dips back down a bit before heading up, which gives those muscles a break for the last stretch. There are some sketchy climbs on big rocks, but I'm a very cautious hiker and it was nothing I couldn't handle. The view from the top is BREATHTAKING, not to mention the arch itself is of course cool (though I'm from Utah, so I have high standards when it comes to arches). My only big issue was portions of the trail with a certain amount of mud and snow; which of course I kind of signed myself up for by hiking in January. I would recommend this hike to anyone who likes a challenge, pretty trails surrounded by trees, and great views.

Snowshoes or Skis necessary as there is 1-2 feet of snow at the trailhead with snow-depths well over 4' near the ridge. The trail had little use since the last big storm and needs some traffic to pack it back down.

We saw 20-30 other groups out on this trail during our 3 hour hike today. Gorgeous views. No snow on the trail, but icy in spots as was mentioned a few days ago.

Quite possibly my favorite hike. The river was so full you could feel the power of the water rushing by. At points the water is overhead. Just amazing.

Late review. We went late summer 2017.

I hiked this with a group in the fall. Outstanding hike and view at the arch. Hoping to trail run up to the "false summit" in the near future.

Completed 1/5/19. Great hike! Loved the views. Packed snow about the last 1/3 of the hike....Used microspikes only on the way down

Nice short hike, rather steep, cool arch. Currently icy in spots, microspikes very helpful.

Hiked to Lake Dorothy up the Arapahoe pass on Sept 17, 2018. A beautiful day, we arrived at the trail head at 8:30 AM and were able to find a legal parking space just down the hill from the camping area. We only saw 5 other hikers the entire trip; one woman coming down, two college men who passed us on the way up and three people going up on our way down.
Very windy at the lake, The "shelter" at the the lake is little more than an organized pile of rocks that is too short to protect you from the wind. The Arapahoe trail was protected from the wind, and the sunny south exposure was very pleasant. Completed the 7.6 mile round trip in a little less than 4 hours with a lunch break at the lake.

Good views of falls, which aren't magnificent. Take the trail from Allenspark to avoid park closures.

Trail snow covered but packed down. Cold but trees blocked the wind while still allowing some sun through. Most vehicles parked at fork in road 1/2 mile from trailhead-a but dicey after that.

The park was closed due to government shutdown so it added 5 miles to this hike. Beautiful trail. The hike to the trail was lovely. No part of the entire 10 miles was hard. Didn’t need spikes even and we went on 1/1/19 the day after fresh snow. The waterfall at the top was covered in snow. So not particularly scenic but the trail overall was wonderful. Peaceful winter beauty. Looking forward to spring to see the waterfalls.

Absolutely loved this trail! It was difficult and beautiful with an amazing arch worth hiking to. We hiked in Arches NP previously and this arch rivals many there, in fact, we were able to get directly under this one and were impressed with its size. The trail was well marked, offered varied terrain, and excellent views. The elevation, icy surfaces, steep inclines, and rock scrambles provided a nice challenge for us, but may make it challenging for some. Many parts of the trail had a thin layer of snow over solid ice, so consider wearing shoes with good traction.

This is a very pretty, and easy hike. Snowed all the way down and was just gorgeous. The summit at the top passed the scramble is where the payoff is for sure. Looking forward to doing this hike again in the spring!

Hiked 12/15/18. Went with a friend and we both wore spikes and used poles. It was a gorgeous hike; I've hiked to Ouzel Falls in every season and it is gorgeous every single time. Do you know what an Ouzel is? Google it! And then you'll know what to look for while hiking. Enjoy the waterfalls. Consider extending your hike to Ouzel Lake. It is much quieter once you pass the falls and head to the lake and that's where you'll find your solitude on a sunny summer day so add that to your list, too. #52hikechallenge

I would highly recommend wearing spikes. It was extremely icy- especially closer to the arch. There were point I was crawling on all fours and had to slide down some parts on my butt because it was so icy. Beautiful views though!

Fun to get there! Lots of cool places to climb off trail and great views. Went in December- be prepared for cold weather and ice. Take extra traction if possible to make it easier, not impossible without though.

My partner and I hiked Royal Arch Dec 26th. We left the pup at home, and I’m glad we did because some parts were icy and a little bit more difficult to traverse. I was surprised to see so many folks of all ages on the trail despite being the day after the holiday and how slippery some of the inclines were. It took slightly longer than I had expected but not too bad. I’m glad the weather held off until after we finished though, because I definitely did not look at the forecast. I would recommend making sure it isn’t going to snow/rain for about three hours before embarking.

Overall, the views were great and the arch is bigger than I expected based on the photo. Glad I brought a full bottle of water and let my small pup at home.

Hiked this last year. Great hike, well maintained, moderately trafficked.

Excellent hike with a beautiful view your reward after steep climbing. Spikes needed in some areas today. Not all the great arches are in Utah!
