Fun birding too!

Easy trail, take the 73 and follow Mount Watson Blvd to Watson Lake. The beginning half is offroad and the second half is paved all the way to the camp. From there we took Watson Lake Road which was a little trickier to Sawmill Flat. The rig got a scratched up because of the bushes on Watson Lake Road. Definitely bring a hedge trimmer if you want your rig to not get scratched.

entrance is a little long, like a pipeline road for about 8 miles but air down and you can handle the washboard at about 50mph making quick work of it. The rest of the trail is worth it. Great views thru black rock ending in a slot canyon not much wider than your vehicle for about 1.5 with walls above 100 feet. One way only.

This is a ONE WAY/ ONE DIRECTION trail. Keep in mind that you must enter the way described in this map. This was not clear to me, I thought I could run it in either direction and lost a lot of time on my trip. Very beautiful trail though, high clearance and 4x4 recommended

Nice easy trail. Good for beginners just starting off. Weird gate that makes it seem like the service road enters private property. Didn’t NEED my 4x4 but I used it a couple times for practice.

Fun to drive through.

Go lost near the top. Must have missed a turn. Need to go back. Still fun.

We hiked from Tahoe City to Watson lake just for a one night trip. Parking is super easy (no permit needed) at the transit center in town. Also no permit needed for camping/hiking. We started the hike late (around noon or so) and had no problem making it to Watson Lake before sun down. Beautiful views, not very busy, and a pretty good workout (about 13 miles each way). Definitely bring good hiking shoes, I got many blisters on the hike back out. The only reason I took a star off is because there were not any water sources until we got to the lake, so be sure to start your trip with lots of water! All in all, beautiful trail and I would love to do more of the Tahoe Rim Trail.

Easy drive to the top, all stock Jeep had no problems.

Took some side trials but be careful. Don’t wander to far into the mountain with a stock setup, there are some pretty steep stuff that we almost got stuck in.

FANTASTIC drive. Im a solo female in my 2014 JK--a novice off road--and i did just fine, but I was concentrating deeply to make sure my tires werent sliced up on the rocks. Also, you have to mind the curves, not just the terrain. It takes about a 2.5 hours in total if you take your time and enjoy it. At an hour in, you begin switchbacking down and up multi-colored, jagged cliffs. This alone is worth the drive from pavement over uneven, rocky desert. Watch for Black-tailed Jackrabbits. The canyon itself is more dramatic than I'd expected and there are plenty of areas where you're the only thing fitting through. This was my 6th time to DV and I'm so thankful i was finally A) in the right kind of vehicle and B) there when it was open!

It was nice getting out and on this trail for some off roading adventure. I am not sure why the distance shows 11ish miles whereas it should show more than double, like around 26ish miles.

From start point to the Watson lake it was 90% of paved road. From Watson lake to end point is a dirt track with rocks of all sizes. Non 4x4 are not recommended and will be very hard for the second half of the stretch.

To start from Tahoe city, pass the 73 start point and goto Bunker rd, turn left where it says ‘820’ (it sounds like a private road but is not). At the end, where house number 820 is, you will be greeted with a dirt track, follow this which will turn into paved rd.

Along for the ride this easy ride was an enjoyable one to the look out tower where The ranger was very welcoming and informative. If you want a nice ride this is one to do with family.

Gravel road. Very dusty, but worth it.

Definitely need an off roaring vehicle! Or something at least with high clearance. Once you start there’s no turning around.
One of my favourite places to date. Lots of wildlife and places to stop and do small hikes around. The old town is super cool too. Some people drive though it quickly, but honestly take your time and soak everything in. It’s gorgeous

AMAZING!!!

Oh it’s a dusty road but plenty of turn outs for cars to pass.

Great 4x4 for beginners. A couple of minor tricky spots but nothing to worry about. Make sure to check where you are on the app, a couple of turns you can miss easily. The view at the end of Watson Peak Road is 100% worth the journey up there!

Absolutely beautiful place to take a nice long walk! Once the pavement ends there are very few passing vehicles. The tree canopy keep most of the road shaded and there's a beautiful little creek to check out right off the road. My husband and I really found this to be a very pleasant walk.

Ready for fun! Road is rough for the first ten mile due to washboarding. Scenery is terrific, very memorable and photogenic. We drove it on an off day, day after Memorial Day. Only saw two hikers, no other vehicles. Like purges said, just stay in the tracks and all will be well!

Subtle and easy fire road with beautiful tree cover with an amazing view at the summit. Great if you need a quick cardio MB trail.

We hiked 10.3 miles of the 15 mile route east to west and loved every minute of it. The ascent is easier in this direction. The tree canopy covering the road is memorable and keeps it cooler during warm spells. Very beautiful.

Green gate to forest service road 71 is closed.

Dogs and I loved it. I'm on a 3wheeler handicap scooter and could navigate with ease.

The map only shows the western half of the road, which takes you another 30 miles to Verdi, Nv. I took two days going west to east, camping at Jackson Meadows reservoir the first night. From camptonville, it climbs quickly and you pass the original toll house as you climb to the top of the ridge . You'll thread this ridge as it takes you all the way to Jackson Meadows. The entire route has remarkably gentle grades but the road does get rubbly in places . Biggest concern on my trip was fallen trees across the road, and there were Many. Passage around them (many had been trimmed a bit by chainsaws) was quite tight along a few sections of wall road . Trees are dying up there in the millions nowadays , so maybe take a chain saw if you are hell bent on not turning back .Two quick stretches of pavement mar an otherwise clean run of dirt from the California gold country on the western slope to dang-near Reno . This is not a dramatic route , but seeing Reno to the east as I came down the last pass was pretty cool . This is the route the Donner Party wishes it had found .
