Hiked this beauty for the first time today 01.21.19. Took the difficult route and it was a nice steady climb. Definitely want to try the more difficult next time. A great butt kicker!
Wish I had brought my spikes for the last 3/4 mile. Lots of snow, slippery in areas but doable with nice hiking boots. The wind was brutal and the top completely covered in fog. But wow was it gorgeous! Can only imagine the views from top on a clear day.

Beautiful trail. Micro spikes are necessary and enough snow most the way for snow shoes. lots of people and dogs off leash.

Hike this trail on 1/5/19. The hike is mostly uphill and the snow gets deeper and deeper as you go up, the snow was up to our knees by the time we reached the top. The trail is dog friendly and we had the trail all to ourselves.

Need Sno Park permit, huge parking lot, bathrooms close by. Very crowded near TH and lake. We actually did a 12 mile loop on NFDR 2656 going clockwise. About 3 miles of steady incline. Snowed all day. Didn’t see many people until we got near the lake at the end. Absolutely beautiful and saw a few crazies walking on the lake. Perfect Sunday!

It is beautiful trail covered with snow. Some areas are very slippery. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Mt Hood. I am not sure it is due to weather or just missing it. Lake is frozen and has lots of foot print. I have no guts to step on it.

Steep all the way up. I went in February 2018 on a rare sunny day. Gorgeous views of the gorge. The mountain weather changes drastically up top. Wear layers or at least pack prepared. I remember the wind being brutal. I’d love to go back when the flowers are blooming. Interesting history of the mountain too.

Pretty icy in spots but worth it in snowshoes. Went up on Tuesday and saw 6-8 other people/dogs. Right now you'd need crampons or snowshoes, I saw a few people that turned around because they couldn't get very far. The payoff at the lake is fantastic, it's frozen over but there are some visible warm spots along the shore so I wouldn't recommend walking on it.

Great hike with fantastic views on a nice day! It was a bit steep at times. It was very doable for us in winter.

There is now a parking area that is plowed adjacent to the Ski Bowl parking lot. If it’s winter, make sure to get a Sno-park day pass.

We snowshoed, but we would have been fine with crampons/microspikes. Icy patches made it tough for folks without.

I've only taken the shorter trail but its one of my favorite hikes. Its a perfect hike to do near the end of June. The trail head is steep so it can be a little scary if you're afraid of heights. But besides that its beautiful especially on a clear day.

Took a group of Boy Scouts to overnight at the lake . Built an igloo in the campground area. Very busy parking lot and trail during the day, only ones on the lake that night!

Hiked on 1/14/19. Super steep. Went up the difficult side which I feel good about because it was harder than heck. The last 1/2 mile was fog fog fog and icy. Not safe conditions doing it alone with out proper equipment. I will definitely hike this again.

Very beautiful (especially with all of the snow), but always very, very crowded. There’s a reason it’s the most popular hike on the mountain!

Trail was busier than I expected for it being a weekday but great hike nonetheless. Snow was packed down, using micro spikes made it much easier but could be done without them. Trail is in excellent condition and easy to hike. I didn’t see any dog poop or trash like other reviews mentioned but the first half mile did have orange peels dropped every few feet on the trail...

Such a pretty hike, and the falls are amazing!

Love this hike!!! It was way more then 1.9 it more like 5 1/2 miles almost 6 , still total worth it , you can take a way quicker way to the lake but the loop around is gorgeous. We snowshoed in for fun rentals only 15$ not bad at all .kids could total make it only one big hill at the end .

We completed this trail with my family yesterday 1/6/2019. Beautiful trail, lake was totally frozen, we could walk all the way across the lake. You have to park at SkiBowl and there are two parking lots - one for SkiBowl and other one near Mirror Lake Plaza. I parked in SkiBowl parking and I don't know if snow park permit is needed in this space.
Trail is pretty wide, well groomed and we found many people on the trail. Path from parking lot to the trail-head is well behind the freeway and I wasn't bothered by any noise from freeway. It looks like they put up new plaza, restroom and new trail pathway from parking to trail-head. Overall nice trail.

Beautiful with all the snow! I wasn’t as fit as I would’ve liked to be so maybe I’ll hike it in the summer. Adding snowshoes makes everything harder. Disappointed in how much dog poop was on the trail :(

Kids enjoyed the hike and played in the snow.

We snowshoed this trail on a Saturday morning. There were a few people there when we left the car, and by the time we returned to the parking lot (before 11:00), it was packed. The total length for the trip was 5 miles, with the additional miles from the sno-park.
The lake was covered in snow and pretty. The view of Mt. Hood was spectacular.
The path trail was very hard packed snow and ice. You don't really need snowshoes for this trail. A lot of people were out there without. The trail was pretty crowded.
I prefer a little more solitude hiking and snowshoeing. This would be a good beginner trail. You don't have to worry about getting lost and the scenery is pretty.

Trail is currently closed!!! Tried to take the pup here today but it’s all gated off!

Great exhausting hike, and well worth it with the views and flowers. Why bother hiking a sidewalk, hike Dog mountain because you'll feel like you've been somewhere and experienced something worthwhile!

Easy hike for my first snowshoe adventure. I could have hiked it today without the snowshoes but wore them anyway for the practice. Great views especially with all the snow cover. I even ventured out on the lake. It was frozen solid. Highly recommend checking this hike out this time of year.

My dude and I cross country ( well I did, he skinned) this starting at about 4:30 PM on a Friday night, we were the only ones going down so we missed the crowds. We saw about 3 sets of people returning to the lot. It was perfect for my first time cross country skiing. Don't be fooled- the hill in the beginning is no joke for a first timer! I fell a few times. We did not do the loop, just from the parking lot down to the dock.

Be aware there are snowmobilers at night!

A fun way to bring in the new year! I would rate it as easy-medium depending on your fitness level. The second half of the hike up is switchbacks which don’t get too steep but it is a climb. That made the way back that much more enjoyable though. Beautiful frozen lake with a view of Mt Hood was a nice reward.

Fun, easy hike around the frozen lake.

Beautiful trail. If you want to have some peace and get away from clouds do the extra 1.5 miles to the bridge and then loop back around! That’s our favorite part!

I did this as a fall hike, and it was really lovely. I went up the “most difficult” side and came down “difficult”, and would recommend this if you struggle more with walking down steep grades more than walking up them. Beautiful views of the gorge, and done in almost exactly 3 hours.

Great trail, did this on 12/22. lots of snow and the lake was frozen over. looking forward to coming back in the summer, when mt hood is more visible.
only reason I dont give it 5 stars is the amount of garbage and dog poop bags along the trail. please be courteous people!

It’s an easy hike to a beautiful view. Anybody could do it. Trail is very well maintained and well marked.

Did this Dec 9. The vehicle access road to the trailhead parking lot closes for the winter on Dec. 1 so the hike up the road to the trailhead adds 4.5 miles round trip, making this a 12 mile hike. The log crossing was easy as there is a log handrail next to one of the main crossing logs, so even though it’s icy, you can easily hang on and feel safe as long as the water level is low. Could have used yak tracks in a few icy spots but no need for snowshoes right now. Pretty views of Hood and the falls are beautifully iced over in parts. Almost no one out today due to the weather.
