Great hike - be prepared that it's all up hill going out. The ending is worth it though!

This is my second time on the Kings Mountain trail, my husband runs the Elk-Kings route routinely. The beginning of the trail is covered in majestic ferns and the end in wildflowers and views of Mt Hood and Coastal Range. One is deep within the forest almost to the top and this is why we felt it would be safe to take along our very energetic 5 year old. To our surprise he made it to the summit within 2.5h with lots of breaks and a picnic on the way up (and down). The trail itself has a lot of scree so he held onto us for those sections. He did fantastic scrambling. He was equipped with proper shoes and a vest. For a strong single kid with two parents to mind them this is certainly feasible.

We knew going in that it would/could be a crowded trail, since we were going on a Sunday. My boyfriend and I arrived around 1 and finished the whole thing at 4:30. Not as crowded as expected. Great hiking weather. All around great time.

Well maintained trail in the heart of PDX. I prefer early as the trail is open at 5 AM. Nice and quiet then.

This trail is amazing! Doing the entire 8.7 mile long loop took me about 4 hours w/ stopping frequently for photos. The first loops of the trail are heavily trafficked but if you continue past the Winter Falls loop there is only light traffic. There are areas that are slightly steep but not a lot of elevation gain overall. The falls are beautiful!

Great hike but very rainy day. Was not prepared and did not bring trekking poles. We got to within half a mile of the summit and turned back when the wind kicked up and light hailing started. Will return soon to finish and possibly do the elk loop. On the way down I felt we didn’t need trekking poles tho they would have made it safer. Even with very wet conditions and proper shoes, our footing was solid. Got passed several times on the way down by gazelle like trail runners.

5 stars for the first part of the hike! Hiking the steep steps up to the top is so fun and gives you such awesome views! The path down is neat too (takes you past Monkey Face), but once you get down to the river it’s a little less exciting. Still a really nice trail and we enjoyed it, but all the “action” is in the first half of the hike!

beautiful waterfalls!

Awesome Hike, highly recommended!

Falls themselves are beautiful and the water feels very crisp this time of year.

the hike itself isn't bad at all and there is a decent amount of traffic throughout the hike.

Beautiful hike. We did it on Tuesday after 5 pm. We had the trail to ourselves. There were some people by the lower waterfall.

CLOSED TODAY DUE TO “DANGEROUS CONDITIONS”.

Don’t be fooled by the name. I did not see one dog on Dog Mountain. It is dog friendly though, so I assume it’s a BYO situation.

The assent is hard. With a very steep incline. When the path forks go to the right of you want to really feel the burn. Better views on the left fork, but you can loop back in the opposite direction on the way down.

The peak is confused. We did go off the AT main trail to find a higher point. Views of the Gorge are pretty good. Hard trek. Recommend swimming down at Little White Salmon to freshen up on a hot day.

Very nice hike, with beautiful scenery. A lot of people were not very friendly and didn't smile, something we are not used to. It was nice to see Rep. Adam Schiff on the hike, that was very exciting. My wife and I enjoyed the hike and will definitely be back soon. We will most likely rent a cabin to make it more memorable....

Signs at the trail head still say closed. The area that “closed” the trail is a dried washed out creek. Easily crossed considering the the rest of the hike takes good footing with loose rock. Also passed the park workers replacing the bridge. Second time hiking this, always love the burn towards the top. Bug spray would be helpful :)

Steep but rewarding hike. Get there early on a weekend to avoid the crowds. I wish I would have brought trekking poles; there are many areas with loose gravel going up.

Tough hike with absolutely beautiful views!

Note: The Discover Pass does not work as I found out with my $5 ticket. It is $5/day or an interagency pass will work.

Love this trail, perfect hiking place for a hot day.

Great trails. Not too much traffic and we went on a Saturday. Parking was a bit limited.
We did the entire loop which was about 2 miles. The upper trail was missing a bit of signage, which lead to a few incorrect turns for us. If not for that I would have given this five stars. The views of the lower and upper falls were incredible!

Gorgeous hike but could use some signage to guide you to the actual falls. Had a great hike and loved the natural slide.

Most fun hike I’ve ever done! Loved all the scrabble bits.

Would recommend bringing looots of water (you’ll need it) and some good shoes and poles to make the descent less terrible.

The ground is very crumbly in some areas, but nothing to be too concerned about as long as you’re careful and attentive, even if you’re wearing crappy tennis shoes like I was.

Enjoyed this hike. Peaceful and beautiful

Nicely maintained trail. Beautiful view at the top.

Must see! My 8 year old did this hike and loved it! Will be going back in the spring for sure.

Nice easy hike. Beautiful beach
