This hike has a pretty moderate incline and as a medium level hiker it wasn't too much of a challenge. I thought because of the mileage it might be a bit of a process for me but surprisingly it went smoothly. There are so many beautiful places to take breaks along the trail. There are many creeks, small waterfalls and beautiful trees and greenery along the trail. Honestly, this hike is so worth it. When you finally get to the top its just incredible. The color of Colchuck is hypnotizing. It is a tranquil teal blue and the ice caps and glaciers nearby on Asgard are pretty cool to check out as well. It is such a great place for photographs. An amazing hike for anyone in my opinion!

Such a beautiful hike on a crisp winter morning I recommend this hike to anyone! So many beautiful waterfalls

Phenomenal hike!!! It was warm and sunny in January!!! Lots to see in the first and gorgeous views of the cape and ocean! There some slight up and down. There were some muddy spots but kind of fun to try and get over. At least that’s what my 12 year old step son said. Bring good hiking boots. Great for the family!_

Elk on the way auto and on the way back down. Great views along the way of the coast.

Got there later in the afternoon so thankfully we missed all the tourist hikers.
Great for my 2 year old but again just too popular of a site to go more than once every few years.

Hiked June 15, 2018 for the first time. Trail is muddy and slippery in quite a few spots. The trail surface is very irregular- lots of tree knobs and roots so that you had to watch your feet at all times. It might be an easy hike by elevation gain, but the condition of the trail, and attention needed, definitely makes this trail a moderate. The view is beautiful at Cape Falcon.

Hiked on Jan 1, 2019: no parking fee, no bathrooms at TH, well-marked trail, parking lot fills quickly on wknds, Trail closed/gated at Ponytail Falls. This was a quick beautiful hike (1.5 miles RT) to Ponytail Falls.

Great trail. I love this area so much. Road is BAD we parked 2 miles away from the trailhead so we hiked an extra 4 miles. Do NOT take trail to the left on the rock while it’s snowy- we were postholing in about 6-8” of harder packed snow but still fell through. TONS of animal prints everywhere. Very windy. The trail to the right of the rock is your best bet- SO much easier.

Beautiful beautiful hike!

Great easy hike! A little tough when you want to go down to water , which is cold.. pretty busy on a Sunday, got to parking at about 1100. Water color is amazing!!! Would love to come back when their is snow everywhere . Highly recommend.

Beautiful hike, mostly dirt but where the canopy lightened there was a little snow on the ground. By the end of the hike the snow was mostly melted. The pool was beautiful with the snow falling, but don't expect a big waterfall this time of year.

The waterfall is beautiful. I have gone there many times and every time it continues to blow my mind. The falls and hike change with the seasons. Beautiful beautiful.

What a glorious hike. Exactly what I was looking for.

When driving down the forest road keep going past the nature conservatory trail, and you will find the Hart’s cove parking lot and trail head (this road is closed Jan 1 until July).
Easyish hike in. Beautiful old growth forest. Barking seals. You do have to pass a little creek and will probably get your feet wet. The top is exquisite. The hike back is more difficult.
What a wonderful trail and experience. I will go back this summer when it’s back open.

Horsetail & Ponytail falls are beautiful this time of year, even though it was super cold. Be aware that this trail is a tad steep, but not too difficult. The trail to Triple Creek is closed still due to the fire, but the trail for Horsetail & Ponytail are open and clear.

Not worth so much mud. The trail is in poor shape because it sees heavy use and is naturally muddy. The end viewpoint is nice, but no better than the many nearby roadside pullouts on 101. Not bad, but very, very average.

Great hike for the start of 2019. Get there early as there is parking but it will fill up. Hike is easy and well worth it. Be prepared for lots of people. It’s a popular spot!

Great winter hike !!

I'd been to this trail several times during the summer, but never during the winter, and wow... go during the winter months! The trails aren't as packed, and the waterfalls are flowing with so much more water! Bring a waterproof jacket though because when you go under the falls the mists are so strong that you may get soaked. Excellent hike that I will keep going back to.

made sure to go the last weekend of the year before it closed. very stormy but very beautiful. make sure you bring waterproof shoes!!

For a somewhat out-of-shape 50 year-old who used to be an athlete in my younger days, this was a great test of Character. Did it solo, as at the last week before, the others I was to be climbing with had to back out. Trained somewhat before doing this hike but not nearly what I would have liked to.
Very strenuous for me. Took almost 9 hours to do the round-trip. Thought I was in the clear after I got to the top but did not realize that coming down (Using hiking poles which, in my opinion is a must) was going to hurt even more. (Oh, my knees!!)
Even so, was a hike that I will remember forever.
If you leave early and pace yourself, it will be strenuous but doable and well worth it!!

This hike was basically easy all the way until the switchbacks at the very end. At that point, I thought I saw Jesus coming for me. The mud on this trail is no joke, and the creek crossing was legit since I went on Dec 30, just days before the gate to the trailhead is locked for 7 months. The old growth trees are impressive, and the view of the cove and Chitwood Falls at the bottom are otherworldly. There were loads of fungi, but not too many critters out, most likely due to the time of year I hiked this. If you’re lucky you can hear the seals barking in the cove, but I didn’t actually see them. I highly recommend this hike, but be prepared for the steepness at the end. Good shoes are a must if you’re going to tackle this hike in the winter.

Absolutely amazing in every way, even when muddy and wet it was still fun to trail run. Just get ready to stop a lot, it’s breathtaking all throughout. I enjoyed starting at the North parking lot (not where this map leads you to) and running clockwise.

Completed 11-19
Hardest hike I’ve done yet, but the lake was incredible. We tried to do Aasgard but ended up going up the glacier.

Gorgeous views with the chance of seeing elk along the way.

Backpacked this on November 7th, 2018.. And wow. This was my second time on the lake, but the first in the winter months! It was amazing. There was an average depth of six inches of snow at the time it seemed. We attempted Aasgard Pass but were conquered by it, as conditions got a little too hairy and technical for us.

Amazing!

It’s one of the best hikes that I have done here in us.... this time of year around with the overcast, the forest for green and live and serene and beautiful... waterfalls were amazing and walk behind certain waterfalls makes you forget where you are

Such a beautiful hike!!! I’ve done it a few times now lots of fun..
