Beautiful trail. The lake and trail that loops it are worth the climb. Be sure to check out Lonesome Lake Hut! There are bathrooms there and places to change if you want to swim!

This is a really nice hike in Franconia. Although the incline is steep at parts, it levels off shortly after. Definitely less strenuous than the trails up the ridge across the highway.

At the lake is a lovely dock that gives views to Franconia Ridge and Cannon. This is a great place to stop for lunch. Curious and friendly resident ducks on the lake may come up to you, but don’t feed them! They are fun to watch though.

It can get a bit muddy around the lake, but bog bridges help mitigate that.

I took the Dodge Cutoff Trail back down. It was less developed than the LL trail up. No staircases on Dodge. Less people though. I’d recommend going back down the way you came though.

Really nice hike, a good way to pass a few hours.

short and sweet. steep in areas but its a short hike so its not bad and view of echo lake is nice. for those who like hiking sticks this is a good trail for one. my son was only 4 and daughter 8. They did it and loved it.

Maybe I didn’t walk far enough but I walked till the trail ended. This is a Walk not a hike up a mountain. It is virtually 0 grade uphill. I would plan to come and sit on the huge rocks in the creek and enjoy the day, not do this as a hike for fitness etc.

Easy in the 4000 footer sense. Not truly flat the entire way as others indicate here but a gradual ascent. Views at the top are spectacular but it was unbelievably crowded when we summited. The day we went (a week ago) one women sprained her ankle - might have been because of the overly wet conditions. Trail was almost all water the entire way after a week of heavy rains.

Tough uphill, a little muddy at the top. Nice views.

Nice river walk, payoff is nice with a closed in pond and waterfall

What a nice place to hike. I was surprised by the abundance of different mushrooms in that forest. They grow in many colors and different sizes.
Luckily we used bug repellent so the mosquitoes didn't bother us too much.

Did this with my 10 and 1 year old in a backpack and it was pretty easy. A little long for the 1 year old, 90 mins up and 60 down. Beautiful view of the brook most of the way up and nice cool breeze. Will definitely be doing it again!

Great, well marked trail but don’t let the rating fool you! Almost immediately, we went straight up and it did not relent until we reached the top! We followed red to the top. Coming down was also well marked and groomed. We followed orange down to the 2nd white junction and hung a left to head down white. White took us to a dirt road we took a left on that and we walked the road the rest of the way to our car! (The road was easy) I would say this aired on the side of moderate!

Great hike. Very gradual at the beginning and then the last 100 yards or so was a steep climb but SO worth it! 360 views at the top. Beautiful. We started late (1:30pm) and finished at 7:30pm... INCLUDING our 1 hour break. So our hike was 5 hours total from beginning to end (not including break time). I used hiking poles.. and I also wore hiking sandals which I feel slowed me down because there are some rocky parts. Next time I will wear my hiking boots.

Fun family trip with just the right mix of fun and challenge. Some steep and rocky parts but nothing too tough. I saw people of all ages - from young families with parents carrying babies in packs, to teens and seniors. Nice brook running up the side of the trail at some parts. Nice view st the summit. Can be a bit busy - not the trail you want if you prefer solitude. Well marked. Done with a 10 and 12 yr old, and 4 month old puppy. Nice canopy of trees to shine away the elements.

We did this with our two children age 3.5 and 5.5 y and it was a big success. The young one was in my back for the first half and then he wanted to climb on his own. It was a lot of fun. I recommend this trail for any family with minimum experience. Hiking boots are a plus since some sections are somewhat rocky.

was a nice hike up today. under the canopy of the trees, air temp/humidity not bad for our group of 5 to make it in about an hour. the kids did fine, though one thought it was more steep than she expected. a great day

Awesome begginer hike to get you fitted for more bigger hikes. Trail gets steep for a ways. Beautiful lake and hut. Recommend doing the full trail around the lake. Great views!

A Hidden Gem. Theres 5 great scenic vistas along the trail with different angles of pinkham notch. It gets steep towards the top but its atleast well groomed and stable.

We went Bald Mountain first, then Artist's Bluff with three adults (one novice) and a 7-year-old. It was challenging enough to keep my daughter happy (she loved the scramble to Bald Mountain) but not too tough for my wife, who rarely hikes. I would strongly recommend poles for this one, and it's definitely a fair weather hike. Varied topography throughout, some excellent views, and interesting scenery, including a lot of relics from long-gone loggers.

A Favor if you go: My 7-year-old lost a classmate and friend recently, and she built a little memorial to him at the top of Bald Mountain. If you pass that way, please add a stone and send a picture to swordsmith at gmail so she can pass it on to his twin sister.

Took the trail behind the visitor center to the left. Hiked up 1.6 miles expecting to reach the top. At the end of the 1.6 miles there was another Mt Williard sign for .5 or .6 miles. With sunset coming I did not have the time for the extra leg. This website either needs better directions to the trailhead or to update the hike the 4.4 miles.

Steep climb most of the way up with many roots/rocks. Went with our kids and they made it but it was tough. Overall a great workout and many people were getting winded making it to the top. View of lonesome lake was nice with a surprisingly strong breeze to cool us off.

Definitely a family friendly hike on a well marked, gently sloping trail. Easy for even young children or seniors to climb. Beautiful views of the notch from the top.

Love this! Amazing views make for a perfect spot for lunch.

Beautiful view! Parts of the trail were very steep may be difficult for some people, but other than that it was great. The view was beautiful but very busy with people driving up to the parking lot right near the ledge.

Even though the uphill climb was a bit rocky it was well worth the lake views at the top!

So much fun and the view is to die for !

Beautiful waterfall with a lean-too at the base of it. Definitely worth the walk.My wife and I went in February and the water fall was frozen over.

Went clockwise. Took the spur out to bald mountain which had a scramble that was challenging for the little ones but worth the view at the top. Fairly steep at points. Could be marked a little better at spots and path from bottom (across from echo lake parking lot) to the trailhead parking lot was through a field (next time will probably walk along the road instead). View from artists bluff was also very nice. Took about 2 hours

love. short but tough hike with an exceptional reward waiting for you at the top. Seeing the water sparkling through the forest was a joyful sight and swimming in the soft water felt luxurious. The walk around the lake was dense and a bit muddy but gorgeous views all around.
my dog enjoyed it too.

Nice early morning hike to the top and some great views.

Great hike and view at top. 2 streams at beginning to cross and ledges at top that need to be careful with little ones.
