Definitely one of my favorite passes in Colorado. I lived there for about 7 years and have traveled over many. This one is not difficult at all with the exception of a spot or three. A must is a side trip from Camp Bird to the west up to the base of Mt Sneffels and the high alpine lakes there. IF your lucky and are there end of July early August you might catch the wildflower explosion. On a good snow pack year it might not be clear until end of July. On July 4th, they have the July 4th Ski Race at summit of the pass. Fun event.

Hiked 4/21. Broke fresh trail as it had snowed about 5 inches overnight. Definitely needed snowshoes for the top 1/3. This trail is far more beautiful covered in snow than in the summer time, so get it while you can!

Great trail run for moderate rating (a stock 4Runner didn't have issues). Could be very narrow for some full size trucks going out. Also came across the 311A sunken boat, just be aware the ice is melting and could get worse but me and the group of 4 hugged the outer path and made it fine.

Just did this loop with a 2001 Xterra with 31" A/T tires and a 3" lift. Most of the trail was a breeze, but the section with the sunken car and a few climbs after it felt a little hairy. Very fun though, but be smart, be careful. The section near the car still has ice on the ground and is sloped toward the mud pit. It blows my mind that car even attempted driving out there...

Can I take my Honda Pioneer on this or do you have to have a licensed vehicle??

Headed up April 14th 2018 through Apex road, made it after the switchback and a little up the road there was a turn around followed by another snow cover unmaintained road. We headed up the snowy road for about .25-.5 miles. Got stuck in a snow drift and had to call AAA to come pull us out. 8 hours later we made it out. Tow truck had lots of trouble even with chains getting up to where we were. I m the dummy for not waiting.

Pretty good one. My power wagon was just a bit to big in spots though. Whoops.

just went on this trail yesterday 4/8/18 with my tundra with 3" level and 35s , a stock Tacoma and a f150 with 3" level. made the loop around and got out. came up on a car that was frozen in the creek up to the Windows. Definitely a learning experience for sure.

was just here March 9th 2018, didnt see any closed signs. Trail was plenty open with minimal snow concentrate most on short flat sections. some fun obstacles and pull off points. completed fairly quickly in 3 inch lifted Land cruiser with 32 inch tires (didnt air down) and no lockers other than center. nothing overly difficult, would have made some of the harder obstacles easier if i had aired down. if your on the fence because of the difficulty rating, as long as you got some ground clearance, youll be fine. crow creek trail via slaughterhouse was gated off.

Great trail for fun. I drive a stock Jeep Liberty with no lift but good tires. I can make it clockwise but not the uphill (without possibly messing my vehicle up) not the uphill counterclockwise. Not great views for mountains but you are in the woods. It’s wonderful. You need 4wheel drive for sure. Great trail but more a 3 in rating 4 counterclockwise I guess. 4 hour round trip Denver to Denver with a great adventure in between. I probably shouldn’t do this trip in my vehicle so don’t imagine it’s just easy. Fun though.

Thought it'd be great to do this road after the recent snow and it didn't disappoint. We couldn't do the whole loop due to the "sunken object" still being stuck in the ice on 311A. Didn't want to chance going around it. I walked up to the bypass and fell thru the ice about 6 inches just walking on it. Wasn't bringing my jeep thru that.

Other than that it was a great ride in 6-8 inches of snow.

Trailhead is up Pole Hill Rd from GPS marker. Small unpaved parking lot before (seasonally) closed gated; stay to the sides and beware of your car’s underbelly. Our hike commenced around 9am and we only saw two other dogs and their people near the trailhead. The map incorrectly lists the hiking trails’ numbers. We never found 247/A and we had to use Apple Map’s satellite imaging to follow AllTrail’s loops. Great trail for humans and dogs alike. Good vistas, very natural, and fun challenges throughout.

We thoroughly enjoyed our snowshoe hike along the mining road, but we only went as far as tree line due to weather coming in. We were the only ones on snowshoes, all other tracks were from skis and boards, winding off the trail through the woods. Beautiful views. Protected from the wind while below tree line. Parking was a bit difficult as the trail head is off a residential street. Moderate difficulty is accurate. Slow steady uphill climb.

Took my 97 land rover discovery to this trail for the first time. First part of the trail is easy then there are small sections that are little harder. Generally when the trail gets harder you have a second easier option right next to it. Snow was very slippery down hill. I was in low gear while applying the brakes. Part of the uphill trail gets very hard and I had my center locker on the entire time. Great trail and will come back for more!

Hiked 3/25 in hiking boots without spikes and the trail was manageable. Right as you’re ascending toward the lake at the very end of the hike, the snow gets about knee deep so you should try and stick to the packed sections. Overall, the hike is worth it with amazing views , just prepare to sink in snow in a few spots.

Did the whole loop even passed the frosty bridge of wonders. I probably shouldn’t have risked it but I got passed it. Now that I think of it, I really shouldn’t have tried that lol. Plenty of decent rocks and places to sit and relax at. I enjoyed it.

Hiked today Saturday 3/24. Mostly covered in snow, though did not use snowshoes. Used microspikes the first half going up but would have been OK without those as well. Top third was very dip and you'll sink down every once in a while but it's more or lass packed down at this point.

Great hike with great views. You can always find more breathtaking views in the Rockies, but you can't beat this one only an hour from Denver.

2017 Tacoma SR with 2 inch lift and 265/75/r16 KO2’s. No lockers. Most of it I could do with 2wd, until the 2nd Parking lot (intersects with sugarloaf). After that you can stay on a maintained trail or take the burly way. I’m not sure I could mtb up that section let alone take any vehicle. The 1st parking lot area that really looks like an open area with a few fire barriers made of rocks. From that area on there are some cool offshoots to play around with that are pretty easy but still a good practice. The maintained main trail is really just a bumpy dirt road that even a suburu can get into, except for maybe the snowdrifts.

Went up on 3/18/18 right before it snowed. Trail was a ton of fun. I have a stock 2017 Forester XT, only thing done so far is new AT tires (KO2s). I didn’t bottom at all. Some steep rocky spots. Car handled it no problem. Was snow on the trail and I got off the trail before a snow storm came. Later found out a bunch of vehicles had to be rescued. I’m posting a YouTube video of my ride up.

The mysterious object blocking the trail is still there. We drove around it over the ice, but I definitely would not recommend it. Super scary !!!!

It's close and easy to get to. Great camping on either end. Boulder County is awesome about marking the forestry roads.

Went a few weekends in a row now. Weekend of 3/10 was dry with ice in the shade. No issues. Easy trail.
Weekend of 3/11: blizzard. 2ft or more of fresh snow while we were on the trail, large drifts towards the top. Lots of fun!
2011 Tacoma single cab 3.5” lift
18psi 285/75r16 mudstar radials
No lockers
No sway bars.
No issues with this trail.

In the summer difficulty 3.5/10. Winter 7/10. Trail does not shut down, and there are enough trails that connect to keep you busy as long as you want. The back side drops down st. Mary’s glacier.

We completed this trail today. Snowshoes were not needed for the first two thirds of this trail, but were very helpful for the top third. That’s how my wife did it, I didn’t take my snowshoes and still did fine. A lot more snow than last weeks pics.

Demetri, Keith & anyone else that might want to share: Please never publicly share the location of an abandoned vehicle (especially with the make and model)... trailsoffroad.com mentions it a bit more responsibly:

> Special Note - Winter Season 2017/2018: There is a large object that is blocking part of the trail. This blockage is a full blocking of the trail at the location. trailsoffroad teams will be out soon to document exactly where this debris is and will note it here as "as far as you can go". The Pike's Peak Ranger District has been made aware of the object, but it may be spring before it's removed from the trail. Do NOT try to bypass the object as some have and turn around. If you do a Trip Report for this trail, please take GPS cordinates of the problem when you encounter it and we will note it here.

took my stock 18 Crosstrek today with 4 friends and murdered most of that trail. Stock tires, 8.7 inches of ground clearance saved our asses.

Note: about 10 miles in there is a small frozen stream with a Ford escape frozen solid up to mid door. inside is full of ice, its awesome. Unfortunately you can't easily get passed it. I don't think the forest service can clear it till spring.
