Breathtaking !!! My fave place soo far.

The map only shows the western half of the road, which takes you another 30 miles to Verdi, Nv. I took two days going west to east, camping at Jackson Meadows reservoir the first night. From camptonville, it climbs quickly and you pass the original toll house as you climb to the top of the ridge . You'll thread this ridge as it takes you all the way to Jackson Meadows. The entire route has remarkably gentle grades but the road does get rubbly in places . Biggest concern on my trip was fallen trees across the road, and there were Many. Passage around them (many had been trimmed a bit by chainsaws) was quite tight along a few sections of wall road . Trees are dying up there in the millions nowadays , so maybe take a chain saw if you are hell bent on not turning back .Two quick stretches of pavement mar an otherwise clean run of dirt from the California gold country on the western slope to dang-near Reno . This is not a dramatic route , but seeing Reno to the east as I came down the last pass was pretty cool . This is the route the Donner Party wishes it had found .

Wow. This hike Is now in my top five in Reno. I have hiked almost every other trail, and this one was the most challenging, with the best views hands down!. I went on a weekday around 1 o’clock and there was virtually no one else on the trail with me and my dog. Wide set trail with changes in terrain and up hill almost all the way. The view even just 3 miles in of the whole city of Reno is jaw dropping. I can’t wait to come back and hike the full thing - will definitely be an accomplishment.
This is NOT the hunter creek trail, nowhere near it (this one is up past scolaris), and the directions take you right to the trail head. I would definitely keep the map open as you’re going the first couple Of miles if you want to follow the main trail. There are a lot of off shoots and you can lose the main trail easily without looking at the map.
Highly recommend this for a good workout!

I've been driving this trail for years, it's a good short beginner trial with some fun more challenging offshoots. Right now in March 2018 it's got some lower areas that are pretty washed out, but as long you have a basic 4x4 you should be fine.

I've been wanting to check this trail out for quite some time. I hiked it after several nights of snow, with melting during the day. Looked like all of the tracks from the 4X4's were headed down hill, the mud was quite slippery. They must have done some work to the road as there were no large rocks, no deep ruts. Very pretty area, minimal sounds from the highway. Hoped to see some mustangs, only saw tracks. Glad that I hiked it, I've been up rougher roads in rental cars!

Good trail to hit when heading from Reno to Virgina city. a lot of loose good size rocks. 4x4 with good clearance or skid plates recommended. took about 30 minutes or so. close to 4 miles .

Trail is not closed, we did it today... Was amazing, a tiny bit of snow, but trail was in good condition. Cant wait for summer... They made it easier, there is no more crap that will smash your truck :)

Great scenic diversity, a little crowded but challenging and SO worth it.

Are there trails that I’d be able to take my stock 2017 tundra on? I’m not expecting to do rock crawling, I just want to get on some dirt roads and climb up the mountain to see some beautiful sites!

Nice and easy for a New Year's Day hike!

Very fun shorter trail. Definitely would rate moderate for anyone in a full size truck, easy on an ATV or maybe a two door Jeep (anything narrow with a short wheelbase). Did this trail in my Tundra crew cab, and barely fit in a couple places, plus the trail winds along 70-100 foot drop offs in certain points (not as easy when your tires are on the edge). Very rocky in certain places, so be careful not to pop a tire, and watch for other traffic on the trail because passing is extremely difficult on most of the route. Amazing views and took about 40 minutes to complete at a slow comfortable pace. Would definitely do it again, and if I were in a more narrow vehicle I’m sure it would be even more fun and a little less hair raising.

The staging point for off road driving is on Avenida De Landa where it turns into Las Brisas. Look for the sign in the picture. All other entrance points are blocked off. Fun trails. We didn't have a lot of time to explore so we'll be back for sure.

We decided to check out this trail late in the day on our way home from Stonyford. I’m sure it’s beautiful during the day and the stars were amazing at night but I’d suggest a morning start instead of evening so you can take in the views. The road though was just that, a road. It had a bit of washboard and potholes but I definitely wouldn’t classify it as a “hard” off-road trail for a 4WD. With the elevation changes and length is sure would classify for a hike.

Fairly easy trail when dry. Views are absolutely stunning. Great family fun. View from Lookout Point is breathtaking. Would definitely go again. Loved it.

easy drive with clear roads. saw two other couples the 2.5 hours we were there. one driving down on the jeep road/path and one walking down. basically had the place to ourselves. kids had a blast with the snowball fight. stunning views that look like a fake background drop. easy hike.

Had some snow and ice to add some complexity, but was pretty easy and enjoyable trail.

HOT the day we went, no shade so we took an umbrella and lots of water. Great views!

Question: is this trail horse friendly?

This trail should be split into 2 sections. The eagles lakes side, and the Cisco side. The Cisco side is a breeze. Not difficult at all and very scenic. Stock 4x4 no problems. The eagle lakes side on the other hand. Trail is very narrow, expect scratching your rig up. Have big wheels and armor underneath or you’ll regret it. The trail is steep and jagged. Managed to do it in a 4x4 Tacoma with 3inch lift, stock tires, but wouldn’t do it again until I was sitting on at least 35s and some better armor underneath.

The gate was closed so I wasted a trip

Started out pretty rough and some narrow passes. Definitely needed four wheel drive in this area. I would call this section moderate not easy. Very beautiful views, we were in our 4x4 Jeep and we had to move very slow on this section. Then about half way it looked much better and probably maintained by the county. From there on out there was still very pretty views but that section was easy. There are a few homesteads in the easier section so that is probably why the road was better.

Excellent trail to test your abilities. Water crossings can be deep and swift

Challenging trail that never disappoints

not for the feint of heart or shiney rigs

Okay, let me first say, you CANNOT take your standard SUV on this trail. This was my first try at this trail and it’s a bit more than expected. There are a few areas, that I needed to overcome because of the size of my truck and the obstacles. There are areas with large boulders and trees. It is steep! One small mistake and you could damage your truck. Experienced people will find this trail easy. People whom are just getting into the sport will find this hard. If this is your first time on this trail, you will wonder when and how it will end, don’t turn back. Keep going up! When you reach the top of the hill there are two roads, turn LEFT it will take you back to the main road you first started. There is no cell service until you hit the main road. Good luck, stay safe and have fun!
