on Walking Dunes Trail

camping

I love Cape Henlopen, it has to be the coolest place you can camp. Even though its a small state park, you’re right by the beach. So you can camp and walk over the dunes and you’re at the beach in 10mins. Its so peaceful at night with the wind, crickets, and the sound of the waves. And you can always find a camp ground year round.

nice trail leads to the beach that alone makes it 5 stars. easy to walk ride or walk your dog.

This is a great place to see and great for running. However it is not good for dogs as there are tons of these little spurs that get stuck in the their feet very painful to say the least.

This is a well marked path that is shared with cyclists too. It goes past several World War II structures and offers a lot of variety in terrain. Don't forget your bug spray!

I was pretty excited to find this trail while vacationing at Fenwick Island. But like the other reviews, the bugs made it pretty horrible and unbearable. I'm pretty sure I spent 80% of the time swatting bugs. It's worth noting that I went in mid-August so you might fair a little better another time of year. If not for the bugs it would have been a decent way to kill a couple hours away from the beach community.

1st time there...amazing experience with the ponies. Very easy trails for casual 1/2 day hike.

Nice day for casual hiking. Lots of wild life. Beatle infestation has claimed "clumps" pine trees. A spur trail led to the marshes and views of the ponies.

What a unique place, so scenic and love the horses.

Nice and safe

Just a heads up, dogs are not permitted on the VA side of the island....not even in the car. We were unable to hike for this reason. Otherwise a pleasant drive up the Eastern Shore...

Easy walk, wet at times, can get crowded

Great trail to run in early morning summer days and anytime during other seasons!! Connect to Gordon Pond Trail for a nice 16 mike loop to Rehoboth!

Please be aware three is any entrance fee of$20 for a week. they also have annual passes.

A must do during the fall. Temperatures are pleasant, crowds have died down for the season, and wild horses provide visitors such a unique experience!

Connects to the Gordon Pond Trail, World War 11 history and great views.

About: Assateauge Island is a National Wildlife Refuge located on the Easter Shore of Virginia and Maryland. As a National Wildlife Refuge, it remains principally unchanged and unimproved by man and is host to a wide variety of animals including a multitude of birds and the famous Chincoteague Ponies. With access from Chincoteauge Island, there are numerous multiple use trails, a beach and an educational visitor center. There is no camping on the VA side of Assteague but backcountry camping is allowed on the Maryland side (permit required).

Distance: There are numerous trails throughout the refuge. The longest is the Wildlife Loop at 3.25 miles. It includes a nice observation platform and plenty of parking. The shortest is the Lighthouse Trail at .25 miles, which ends at the Historic Assateauge Lightouse.

Duration: The Woodland Trail can be hiked in about 1-2 hours based on pace.
Difficulty: This is a paved, multi-use trails which is not very challenging but allows for some nice views.

Cost: Passes to the refuge can be bought on a weekly ($15-20) or annual ($30-40) basis. Active Duty Military is free. Just show an ID Card and you'll get an annual National Parks Pass.

Accomodations: There are no accomodations on the National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island, however neighboring Chincoteague is a great place. It has small, island town appeal complete with a movie theater showing one two movies a week. There are several choices for lodging from motels, to hotels, to Bed and Breakfasts. We typically stay at the Hampton Inn and find that the service is great, the views from most rooms are beautiful, and the hot breakfast (included) is always good. We've also stayed at the Days Inn, and a couple of other local hotels. Camping is also available at a handful of Chincoteague Camp Grounds.

Dining: Chincoteauge boasts numerous dining options. Famous Pizza is great for pizza and Subs and pretty inexpensive. Bill's Seafood is a great sit down restaurant on the classier and pricier side. Be sure to get reservations during peak season. You're missing out big time if you don't grab some home made ice cream at the Island Creamery! Even if you need something quick, the McDonald's has a pony corral next to it where you can feed and pet the ponies.

Analysis:Spending a weekend on the Island is one of our favorite getaways. Chincoteauge is naturally relaxing (especially in the off season) with friendly locals, minimal traffic, and a small town feel. With canoeing, kayaking, great food, and some good mini golf, there is plenty to do and plenty of time to relax. The Wildlife Refuge itself offers a little of something for everyone, from bird watching and hiking, to lounging at the beach.

More brush than trees, but there were enough to shield some of the wind.

Wind, rain, sand! Who had the dumb idea to hike the beach in the winter? Maybe some other time.

Probably a better hike for fall. It was almost Christmas and we got caught in the cold blowing rain. It is too long for the punch. If we had seen the horses maybe I would have enjoyed it more.

Came here in December and it was very quiet. Only a few fishermen. Great walk along the beach. Temperature was good for a walk and no wind was blowing so we loved it. Clean beaches.

APPLY INSPECT REPELLENT! It is a nice short hike through marsh, pines, sand. You start out and it's nice, about 1/3 of the way around things turned into a slight nightmare. The trail was very overgrown in spots, tall (6'+-) grass that you had to push your way through while being swarmed with gaint mosquitos and biting flies. Had a few bite marks, then more and more surfaced. Small welts 75+ from my arm pits down, I am covered in chigger bites. Luckily no ticks.
