Beautiful hike with amazing views at the top. Super muddy and slippery during the final stretch, but completely worth it. We recorded nearly 5 miles in just over 2 hours along this trail.

nice hike close to Honolulu. lots of mud and a few tricky spots even in good weather. often cloudy at the top but still a fun one. don't need pants for this one but some shoes with tread are helpful. 3 hours at a decent clip in good conditions for an experienced hiker, probably around 5 for less experienced taking breaks. shout-out to Joel, nice running into a fellow AllTrails hiker!

Great hike. Second waterfall is the best. You’ll be in the clouds around the crater depending on time of day. Great views.
5.4 miles, 3 hours without a pack or water, minimal stopping and some light jogging. Wear Trail running/water shoes with good grip as it’s extremely muddy, slippery, and you will have to cross the stream multiple times.
This hike is not for beginners. If you don’t have the upper body strength to use a rope to help pull yourself up a steep incline...steer clear. You’ll have to hike up the third waterfall to get to the ridge around the crater. It uses ropes almost all the way up. Those who take 6 hours have a full pack and are walking the trail slowly.
If you’re tracking your movement on All Trails you will not get lost.

The beginning of this trail doesn’t not start where the directions take you. Park on Auloa Rd, walk 0.85 miles to the actual start of the trail. Go along the interstate towards the royal Hawaiian golf course, the beginning of the trail is about 0.5 miles pass the guard shack. Overall the hike is a great work out however there is a good bit of rock climbing in order to get to the peaks! Some are literally a straight climb up the side of rocks, very thankful for the lovely souls who incorporated the ropes! This hike is not for everyone, depending on your mobility you may be limited to how far you can go. Views are great but if you can go out a clear day they will be even better!

Lots of rain on the Makua side today. Kuaokala was muddy and slippery but nothing major. Makua Valley was socked in but cleared up after 20 minutes. Bring water and a snack. 7.2 on my Suunto.

Excellent hike. A great workout and the view are crazy. If you fear heights, don’t go all the way up.

unique in that you are hiking down to a waterfall. moderately steep decline over many roots but there are plenty of ropes and trees you can hold to help you down(and back up).there's only one part that opens up for a view but mostly it's thru narrow paths with alot of tree cover and mud. we ran into a hunting party with 6 dogs who just killed a boar. pretty awesome. don't forget to bring a swimsuit to swim at the waterfall.

Absolutely breath taking and rewarding! The trail is very prominent and easy to follow. This trail really shows off the diversity of the Hawaiian ecosystem, the trail goes through so many changes of venue with regard to plant life as you hike the switchbacks up to the knifes edge Ridgeline, looking down on the most beautiful rain forests and blue ocean. You’ll constantly catch yourself turning around for a peak at the view, wondering when the summit will arrive; trust me when I say that YOU WILL KNOW WHEN YOU GET TO THE TOP, it is unmistakeable and gorgeous.

Climbing the upper section can be slippery and muddy, also look out for the tree root systems that canvas the ground because these are super slippery on decent; otherwise, it’s very manageable for any age other than the fact that is long and steep. I recommend starting super early with the intent to summit for the sunrise, the trail is very easy to navigate by headlamp. Have fun!!!!

It’s a hike! Moves you through lower island trees to a pine forest and then the last stretch puts you into the rain forest. The last third is very steep but the view is worth the effort (if the fog lifts).

Muddy, slippery but overall easy hike. Took us two hours with all the pictures. All the warnings about bacteria in the water is true and serious, think twice before you step in the water or consider to swim.

One of my favorite waterfall hikes on the island! Make sure you wear water shoes or sandals, there will be multiple times that you have to pass through a stream and it is difficult not to get wet. At the end of the trail, the waterfall is quite beautiful! I’ve noticed that compared to other times of the year, the summer is a lot more crowded. Try hiking up the first waterfall to find the moss slides and an even more private falls! Cheers!

Dangerous hike with a huge payoff. Cliffs are steep, the trail has about 7 rope sections with the last one being the most difficult. All of that is to the first peak, didn’t go to the second or third. See other reviews for that. The words from people who have “the views aren’t any better and it just gets more dangerous”.

This is a hard hike!! Very very muddy and slippery. Before I went (7/9/18) I read comments and thought I was prepared. But it is muddy from start to finish. While hiking around the rim I had quite a few close calls with slipping and nearly falling off the ridge. You really need to give yourself time to take it slowly. I would recommend starting this hike no later than noon. My boyfriend and I started at 11:35 am and didn’t get done until 6 pm. We are in fairly good shape, but can get turned around a few times. Sometimes the bright pink or orange markers are not very clear. Keep your eyes peeled for them, near the ground tied around a tree or within eye level. I hiked the legal way to stairway a few weeks ago and thought that was much easier than this hike. Not positive if I will be doing this hike again or recommending it, especially not to people from out of state.

Easy to pass the trail. Not well marked and many new offshoots for the water utilities and government property. Could not find the trail past the waterfall.
Incredibly muddy, even during the dry season.

the trail splits at the very beginning giving you the option to go down or stay up. I would recommend going down then take the top on the way back. I went with my 15, 10 and 8 yr olds. it was a little challenging because the trail was slippery but we made it!

What a rewarding experience. I urge anyone to complete the full distance till you cannot go any further, use caution. The beginning is very energy consuming and a constant incline, once you move past the sign where the maintained trail ends is where it gets exciting. Be careful

lower forest section, ridge section, and final forest/rock climbing section to summit. amazing views! do not bring kids.

Yes, a great hike. Must park off the golf course road and walk one half mile to trailhead. If you’re a regular hiker and in good condition with plenty of mobility, you should be ok. If you find it challenging during the first half of the hike, the second half may be too hard. Regarding the ropes and the rock scrambles, it will depend on your physical ability and mindset. This is a mostly shady hike, so good if you had too much sun the day before. Early morning would be the best time if temperature is an issue for you. As a 61 year old regular hiker with good mobility, this hike became a challenge in places. But the top was worth it. Kind of fun to see the sightseeing helicopters flying past at a lower elevation. If you’re realistic on your abilities I highly recommend this hike.

Awesome! Muddy and slippery but worth the trip!

Literally my fav hike eva holy shat so fun, I like jumped and stuff, there where like trees there. Overall the water was nice. Muddy too. Outdoors is cool. Recommend for people over the age of 77.

Nice views and a fun climb

Love this hike. Moderate for sure especially when wet. Falls were not really running too much in June. Rope swing always fun

Amazing hike ... we went early (on the trail by 7 AM) and had the falls and swimming hole to ourselves for 40 minuets before the multitudes started arriving.

Great hike. Some areas are pretty steep and lots of stairs. Worth every step for the amazing view at the top. Went early so avoid the increase number of hikes later in the morning.

We got a late start, so even with our water preparedness, we only hiked part of the route. The views we did see were pretty!

Side note: even though there appeared to be plenty of other tourists in the area we did feel somewhat uncomfortable leaving our rental car and belongings for a long period of time due to some shenanigans when we pulled into the park.

Fun hike during the rain. The waterfalls were raging. Very muddy trails

muddy but fun anyway. enjoyed the cool breeze too at times.

A great hike all around!!! love the fact that any age can do this hike. The rope climbs were not that difficult as people make it to be.

One of my favorite hikes! Yes, it’s muddy and yes, it’s dangerous at times. Just be smart about the decisions you make. There are plenty of ribbons to point the way, some you may have to look harder for. But they’re there.

Easy and stunning ! Bring some water and I suggest to start before 11 o’clock because the sun hit hard!
