This is a HARD trail. Challenging in every aspect but the views are well worth it

Great hike, paved all the way. Access to the tide pools is possible from just past the whale watching outpost however DO NOT TAKE BACK PACK KIDS OR THOSE TO SMALL TO CLIMB ON THEIR OWN!

This was on our holiday ‘must do list’ and so pleased we did it! We completed this trail with our 9 year old, we didn’t find it challenging but our son did as it’s quite tolling on his legs and breathing with the constant stepping - lots of rests and he made it to the top and what a view from the look out as a reward! The trip down can be slippery, take your time and we found side steps and crab crawling were the best strategy. Fun adventure would highly recommend, definitely take a drink.

Easy trail with great views. A very nice light hike.

This was a great hike! You go through all different types of forest and terrain including a lot of pine trees and a lot of stairs both natural by roots and built stairs as well. The view at the top is breathtaking if it’s not foggy which can happen a lot in the area.

This trail has been CLOSED! Please add this to the title of this trail as we got up at 4AM and didn’t read all of the comments below.

Guard was not friendly and the road is now private.

By far the best hike I’ve done! You instantly start the hike in the beauty of the rainforest. A few back and forth a over the river, climbing, and finally you get to the first waterfall. From there the ropes are your best friend the rest of the hike. It was raining so we were definitely muddy and wet and we’re still able to climb safely. There and plenty of foot holes and places to rest if needed. The 3rd waterfall is the longest but worth it! We only went partially up the ridge due to wind and low visibility. It’s very slippery on the ridge as well. That plus finishing the loop trail, it took us 5.5 hours. I will definitely be back. It is a full body workout! If it’s raining I suggest shoe spikes for the ridge.

Great views, just be prepared to be in a sheep line with the tourists on the way up and down when it’s busy. If you are athletic at all, this hike is super easy - would not call it moderate. Hop over the fence to get better shots without the railings or tourists in the way.

Awesome hike. Finally went around the whole crater which made it a nice loop instead of out an back. Worth it for sure.

Had my garmin watch following on GPS. It recorded the entire trip as 6.54 miles. It was 2.6 to get to the crater once you climb up the third waterfall. It was about another 2 miles around the crater. We rejoined with the main trail after coming down the ridge from the crater at 5.8 miles.

It took me and my gf about 5.5 hours. We did it at a leisurely pace stopping at all the waterfalls and also took dip in the stream. It was raining at the top which made it super slow going. It gets a little slippery at the top with all the mud.

Really fun experience. Make sure you have enough time to finish. Shoes with tread help. I skidded twice in my worn out running shoes. Wouldn’t wear them on this hike if I went again. Upper body strength helps if you’re planning to do the crater.

awesome hike

Went up this afternoon and on my way down I saw a rescue underway. Looks like a lady got air lifted out. I took the side trail down to avoid the jam.

I felt like I was in Fern Gully!!! It was gorgeous, surreal, and a good hike! Can be a bit slippery so wear good shoes and be ready to be in awe!!!

Arrived at about 9 AM and the lot was already full so we had to sit in a fifteen minute long waiting line. Once we got onto the trail it was a pretty moderate hike, I hiked it through with flip flops and made it easily so what ever shoes you decide to wear should be fine. After a little while there was a long strand of stairs which seemed to be the hardest part. But all in all it was a fun hike and the view was pretty

VERY challenging on the way up but totally worth the views! Some parts we had to scoot on our butts, but a dirty hike is the best hike.

It’s starts beautiful as there are amazing views of the rainforest and it’s fauna, but as the trail continues it gets tight with far too many people on this trail and the views never live up to the opening scene. We found our family standing and waiting 8-10 minutes due to traffic on the trail, yikes. I find the trails of Lyon Arboretum far more rewarding just above Manoa falls trailhead.

Quick climb but quite a challenge and a very rewarding view!

This trail is paved and a nice gradual climb. I would definitely recommend it for sunrise (just like every other hike on this island). Great views at the end of the lighthouse and of the ocean, looking east.

Left for the trail at about 11 AM right after it rained, then had to pay 5 dollars upfront to enter the trailhead and there was still plenty of parking space available. Because it had just recently rained there was lots of mud which made the rocks we were climbing on slippery. The hike itself was about an hour of steady hiking with a beautiful waterfall at the end.

Excellent and challenging hike for a 1.5 miler. Super busy but totally worth it for the views! Love this side of the island.

Nice hike but way too many people on small trail.

I went pre- closure last year and it was a struggle if you didn't have the right footwear! Very slippery and steep at the beginning and end. Saw lots of people fall including myself! Loads of rubble! The top view from the pillboxes were worth it!

Not an ounce of shade on this trail but worth it for a great view of the ocean and coast! Easy and paved!

This is a fairly easy trail to do but gets so busy with tourists! Parking was a nightmare. The view was great but there are certainly a ton of other great trails on Oahu to do if you want to avoid a ton of tourists! Still enjoyed it!

I almost died on this trek in August 2017 - I was not the fittest at the time! But it was totally worth it for the amazing view. If you are going in August, don't go at midday, super hot! Amazing exercise though. Take plenty of water!

Stunning views! Be prepared to endure the heat along this very scenic shoreline hike, because there is little of no shade. As you walk through the Ka’ena Point Area National Reserve beyond the stretch of sand dunes with birds nesting, you may encounter seals resting in one of the many shoreline pools. Besides packing a sufficient amount of water and a snack or two, you also may want to bring along your swimsuit, as you may need to cool off in one yourself before you head back. Easy hike if you can endure the heat.

Enjoyable, Easy, and worth it at the end!

Very beautiful, easy to follow, breathtaking view when you reach the summit.

Hiked this in flip flops as I forgot my sneakers on vacation. If I can do it in flip flops, anyone can do it! The “cardiac stairs” are brutal but the rest of the hike is quiet and manageable as far as gain goes. The view at the top is worth any fatigue you have on the way up!!! Go through the bunker....so cool.

A great work out, probably 1000 steps total

Going non stop with few breaks completed in 24 minutes and 31 seconds

Beautiful hike with amazing views at the top. Super muddy and slippery during the final stretch, but completely worth it. We recorded nearly 5 miles in just over 2 hours along this trail.
