This is an awesome hike to an old hotel, fire tower, and cliff overlook of the Hudson Valley. The kids loved this one. Check out our full write up which includes directions and other things to look for.

really great hike, interesting hotel ruins and amazing views. It is uphill the entire way. If the lot is full, there is a bigger one further down the road, adding an easy .07 that takes you back to the main trailhead. We went in April, there was still snow, but melting, making for a very wet and slippery hike. poles were helpful going back down.

Beautiful hike! Nice slow start winding through the woods. We kept waiting for it to get steep, and when it finally does and doesn’t stop. Absolutely beautiful views as you ascend. The fire tower was out of commission when we went up in the beginning of April.
Can’t wait to get back up there in the summer time and check out those views on a warm day!

The gorge trail is closed for the winter months.

Road to trailhead was not plowed, trailhead was icy but rest of trail was packed and didn’t need snowshoes. The first half of this hike is very steep, 2nd half was an easy incline. Views from fire tower are the best, but it’s pretty sketchy up there and it was locked. Nice hike, spikes needed.

Trailhead was super icy and slick. The rest of the trail had packed or melting snow which was easy to navigate. The views were terrific.

Great weather on Saturday March 31 brought us here past the ruins to the tower. Easy hike thee hours RT includes 30 mins summit time at both tower and the view reached from the right of the observers cabin. BRING Microspikes!! So much ice and frozen snow with holes. No one else had micros there had to be injuries from falls. So many people struggled. BTW leave the sneakers at home. Again so many. Properly prepare for this. Great rewards for those who do.

Don’t underestimate its rating. Yes it is an old road trail but it uphill the entire way. Micro-spikes would be a great option as it’s ice and snow. The trailhead parking gets packed quickly but they fluctuate in and out so I was able to hold off for 10 mins and someone coming off the mountain was leaving. Another great day spent hiking and this one gives you more then the fire tower the abandoned hotel and house are a cool addition.

Awesome hike! Uphill the whole way up. Definitely need microspikes this time of year. Very icy right now (March). The view is beautiful. Very very very busy trail. Get there early! Came off the mountain and the parking lot was full and a hot mess.

The views at the top were gorgeous ! First two miles are definitely easy but the last mile is challenging for anyone without experience hiking. Rather steep incline especially after the first false peak. Snow shoes highly recommended. Took us about 3 hours round trip with conditions

Quick and steep, do not underestimate Prospect Mountain it will kick your butt.

If you start at the opposite end from Buttermilk, the trail is gorgeous and there are very few people.

Fun trail ... nice views ... firetower wasn’t open but awesome trail ...

I live locally, but this was my first time crossing the foot bridge and heading up Prospect Mountain. The trail was still icy and snow-covered in late March. I slipped up the first half of the hike and ended up giving in and putting my spikes on after crossing the highway.

There aren’t any breaks on this hike. It’s short, only about 1.6 miles to the top, but it’s steep. I was breathing hard at the top. The views are beautiful, and there’s a ton of room at the summit.

This is a very popular and well-traveled trail, which is a big downside. I’m selfish and I want the woods to myself. Probably won’t hike it again anytime soon, but it was a decent climb.

Road to and parking lot are plowed. Trail is nicely packed, fire tower is in good condition and the views were spectacular! Enjoy!

It was great hiking on snowy trails and very beautiful view along the trail and on the top from which you can see high peak regions and snow lakes.

Nice trail with good scenery.

A long hike but much quicker than one would expect. The 14 mile length is deceiving, a slow hiker like myself being passed by most on the trail took about 9.5 hrs. Not a problem for a summer day hike.

Trail is crowded in the summer but well maintained and of a modest grade as far as high peaks trails go. Few to no views until you get to the alpine zone. Great views from the baren summit of course.

Hiked this today in the snow and it was a good hike. It gets steep at some spots but not too bad, definitely need micro spikes. Due to the snow, there was no visibility at the top but beautiful snow and ice crystals on the trees and fire tower. Definitely recommend.

I hiked this in winter. The water falls are so beautiful. The trails are perfect. We did the entire 4.6 mile look and stopped halfway at a picnic area to have a snack. If it is this pretty in the winter, I cant wait to come back in the spring. Oh, the rim trail was open, the gorge trail was not (due to ice) but the view we had were still spectacular!

Trail is almost entirely melted after today’s weather ! It was a beautiful hike .. you don’t need spikes anymore unless the temperatures drop again. Will be going again soon

Beautiful hike to an abandoned hotel and a fire tower worth climbing. It’s definitely uphill but we did it with a chihuahua and he was fine!

Trail is in pretty great condition but spikes are a must ! With the warm temperatures there were some very slippery spots !

this trail is a great little trail. there are so many rewards that is great for family of all ages. pets too. i love this trail. the rocks, trees, roots climbing every where. overlooks and all this before you get to the top. if you are looking for a easy fun trail this is the one. A MUST DO!!!!!!

The parking lot was like a frozen pond. all of the thick ice was covered by fresh snow so I didn't know until I tried to stop and kept going. Luckily I was able to carefully turn my car around and there was traction on the one side of the parking lot. The cell service is spotty so I don't know if I would have been able to call for a tow truck. The mountain was the same way. Some parts looked like a frozen waterfall(not a bad thing). I had ice spikes so it didn't slow me down. My dog had some trouble but it gave me a few laughs. Overall the hike was short but rewarding. The only downside was all the graffiti on the cabin and the tower. It's sad that people can't respect the property for other people to enjoy.

Surreal! Went backpacking for 3 days and enjoyed every moment. One foot in front of the other was my mantra for a whopping 30 miles in 3 days. Getting to the top was incredibly rewarding in many ways.

Easy trail with no technical parts, wide open and simple to follow. Went in January and was still in good condition and easily hikeable until we got to the lake where it was icy.

snowshoeing

I snowshoed this last year after we got a huge snowstorm. The parking lot wasn’t plowed and when I got out of the truck the snow was almost to my knees. This was my very first fire tower and my first time snowshoeing up a mountain. The hike up seemed to never end. Once you reach the fire tower the wind was bizarre! I was amazed by how many surrounding towns you could see from it and there’s a nice little map in the tower to tell you. I would hike it again when there’s not so much snow.
