Went out here two days ago and it wasn't a super fun experience so I turned back about 1.5 miles in. 1) Gear - You absolutely need spikes & waterproof boots for the trail right now. Snowshoes don't work because of the mixed terrain. In most non-snow or mixed-ice sections, the trail has become a little stream and lake. 2) You can't really tell where the trail is so I had to keep my GPS out the whole time. Hiking alone in the morning, it's more dangerous to be staring down at your GPS the whole time and also having to scramble around the rocks etc.

Definitely still snow-covered by a few feet. Due to the warmer weather, the snow is very unstable. Snow shoes are necessary. I got about halfway up before turning around as I did not have the gear for it. It's also very hard to know where the trail is due to the snow, so definitely download a map with GPS ahead of time. I will be back when conditions are better.

Easy trail with pretty lakes, but the fact that you can hear I-80 for a lot of the hike definitely takes away from it.

this is a georgous easy relatively flat hike to two beautiful lakes. my dog and I both love this little hike. It is an easy hike and a really nice snow shoe. there is plenty of snow for snow shoeing even in the later spring months. love this trail.

HikingGreat!

This hike was excellent for the two of us who hadn’t been hiking for a while. The views were amazing and we were able to find all five lakes! We went in November 5, 2020 and there were not many people there.

Great!IcyOff trailSnow

Did a portion of the trail on 03/03/21. Very limited parking due to the snow. Difficult to stay on the trail. Used both spikes and snowshoes. Recommend snowshoes. Have been there 3 times this winter and am familiar with the trail. Navigation would probably be difficult for a first timer, but it can be done. Turned around due to time constraints. Like always, very beautiful.

Snowshoeing

Breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains from the peak make the ascent well worth the effort. Most of the trail is an easy incline, allowing you to keep a nice steady pace and enjoy the magical surroundings. Only the last section to get to the top is a little more challenging as you round the back of the peak. The wind was howling in the saddle, but quieted down as soon as we rounded the back side and stayed peaceful even at the top. The trail is about 5.4 miles out and back if you only go to Andesite Peak. Micro-spikes were adequate all the way up to the saddle as the trail is well traveled. Once at the sign where the trial splits between Andesite Peak and Castle Peak, you will need snowshoes to make make it to the peak. I might suggest snowshoes the entire way if it is after a good storm. Make sure to get a daily snow park pass for parking and get there early on the weekends as the lot fills up quickly.
