HikingGreat!

One of my favorite hikes in Raleigh! There’s a ton of parking at the trailhead and bathrooms. I would say the hike was moderately difficult- it’s a bit lengthy (5.8 miles) with a bunch of uphills and downhills (my watch said it was about a 650 foot elevation gain). The trail is clearly marked/easy to follow and it’s dog friendly. The hike took me about 2 hours to complete. I went on a Monday around noon and it wasn’t crowded at all. Highly recommend!

Parking is very limited - we arrived at 9:30am on a Sunday and the lot was 80% full. As others have noted, the first 1.5 miles are a steady uphill climb. For us as intermediate hikers we did not find the climb difficult but were prepared after reading previous reviews so that always helps. There is no cover the entire way, so bring lots of water and sun protection especially on a clear day. Definitely follow the trail up for about 2.5 miles (from the trailhead) for the best views. A lot of people had stopped at the look outs prior to the “end of the trail” and we were glad we kept trekking for some awesome views of the gorge. Pack a picnic and stay awhile!

Well maintained trail but lots of rocks and tree roots so bring your hiking gear.

Easy hike for great views! We read the previous comments and were so glad we did - beware of the drive to the trailhead, definitely thankful to have 4WD. Would love to see this spot in bloom or summer!

HikingGreat!

We attempted to do the Max Patch + Buckeye Ridge trail. It was a lot of fun and pretty easy hiking, but I missed a connection to complete the figure eight trek. I figured it out once I got back home and looked over the map again. I was thinking that the buckeye ridge trail was a loop, but I fact it ends in nowhere in the woods near the AT. I should have reconnected to the AT to finish the hike back to the summit. But the views from the top of Max Patch are 100% incredible and worth the trip up the long gravel road. I would love to go back and do it again right this time, and I would take my pups. Great trails to bring them along.

What an incredible hike, views from the front of the lake and as you hike around get more and more beautiful. There isn’t much shade and you are in the sun most of the time, which is the reason for the difficulty. Bring plenty of water and sun protection. When you get to the top make sure to keep going, about a half mile through the flat part, and you will come out to the most stunning view. Not many people on a hot Wednesday, and most stopped before the best part at the end!

HikingGreat!

We drove from I40, and it was 9 miles of gravel. There were some deep ruts which would be difficult for a 2WD. We have a 4WD and had no problems. You have a choice of which direction to start for the loop, and I suggest going to the left. It is an easy incline to the top where as the right is deceiving. It is flat for a while and than a 1/2 mile up with stairs. On top of the patch, great place to have a picnic and soak in the views. I would come back to visit!

The trail is great beautiful views, and my four paw baby can be on it. I haven't been until today since the pandemic, and was surprised to see all the trash along the road side. One other big issue was dog poop where owners don't clean up after their pets and four small bags where they had cleaned up but just left them sitting. Wish more people practiced leave no trace.

If your up for 40 mins straight up straight off the trail head then the views are some of the sickest in all of the NC mountains. Just keep going! They get better and better.

Backpacking

If you only read the first sentence of this review know this: THERE IS NO SIGNAGE TO TELL YOU THAT YOU’VE FINISHED SHORTOFF AND ARE CONTINUING ONTO THE MST. If you’ve reached the pond on your left hand side, you’ve gone beyond/finished Shortoff and are on the MST. Trail itself is great! My plan was to practice using my new pack with all my new gear so the assenting and descending was a strenuous test that my patellas are hating me for later! I’m giving this 4 stars for the crap signage! (I hiked 3 extra miles I wasn’t prepared for, and the 2 signs you see in the early miles are homemade; and there’s no blazes!?). Be aware on trail, it’s easy to take a wrong turn but after 20ft you realize pretty quickly it’s not the real thing and will turn back. Also, the parking lot holds 10-15 cars max and the next parking lot is 3 miles away at the bottom of the mountain (which looks to have plenty of space but still).
