Did this hike yesterday (Oct. 21). We took the old trail up and new trail down to save our knees. It was a perfect cloudless Sunday for this hike. There are parts on the old trail where it is a little hard to navigate, nothing to where you cant find the trail again though. It was definitely more steep than the new trail, but if im being honest i wish i would have taken the old trail up and down. The new trail is a bit longer than the old trail but not as steep. Plenty of people on this trail as well. Both on the old and new trail. Also, great veiws at the top. The workout is worth it.

Butt kicker, but a nice view at the top of the rocks. Only real downside is the number of people and an overall lack of trail etiquette

We started at 6:15 and reached the top in 2.5 hours. The first 2 miles are through the woods and later the trail opened up with awesome fall colors all around and my rainier starting to show towards the south.
The second half of the hike up is truly picturesque. There were just 2 other folks when we reached the lookout. The best view to grab your breakfast bites.
We ran into quite a lot of people on the way down though. And by the time we were back around 12(we stopped in places for photos) the parking lot was full with around 30 other cars parked outside on the road. Getting in early was a good idea.
My tracker clocked 11.5 miles and an elevation gain of 4070ft. Completely snow free today.

Great view at the top. Nice shade along the trails. Overall not too much litter for as many people that visit this trail.

Long and exhausting. The last 800 ft was tough, will test one’s will power. Otherwise, this hike is highly recommended for the amazing views on a clear sunny day as today.

Very exhausting trail but the view at the top is worth it. The difficulty is mainly in the length and elevation gain, nothing technical here except for some rocky terrain at the end.

My gosh. The view at the top is amazing. I got way too late of a start for someone who likes to ponder for too long at the summit. This resulted in running the entire way back (Takes about 45 min) in the quickly setting sun. Don't be like me; that was terrible, especially when I realized my headlamp was dead. Get an early start and have lunch at the top. Bring way too much water. For some reason, I tore threw 2.5 L very quickly with this hike. The incline (and subsequent decline) are not friendly on the knees, just steep enough that it'll let you know you're working. I would not recommend this hike to someone who is not physically active nor someone who did not hike. It is longer than some and there are plenty of switchbacks. I want to know the story behind the mailbox at the top. It was beautiful to read some of the letters and leave a note for the future.

Beautiful trail. Come early morning on workday if possible to avoid crowds.

This trail is definitely a workout, but on Sunday, 10/14/18, we had the most beautiful, clear day with bright fall colors that made it work the work! Snow-capped Mt Rainier with a foreground of red, yellow and orange leaves on the ridge was breathtaking. Layer up, but we ended up taking off most of what we wore because the weather was so beautiful.. It's a lower body burner for sure, but definitely doable for anyone in good shape. You never lose the trail or have you make your own path or anything like that... just a lot of elevation gain in a short time. Lots of sweat!

What a great hike! Has a bit of that “alpine lakes” feel near the top- not bad for being west of the pass. However, not sure where the measurement for the hike begins, but we logged 9.9 miles from the trailhead, leading us to think that AllTrails measures from the cut off to granite mountain about a mile up the trailhead. That, and the fact that we logged over 4100 ft. elevation gain instead of the 3700 ft. or so they list . So be forewarned if time is an issue- it’s a bit longer hike than you may expect. But good!

Did this hike in August, it’s a nice hike however you don’t have views till you literally reach the top. The rock scrimmage wasn’t bad, it was the loose dirt after the scrimmage for .60 miles that was a tad scary.

It took us 2hr 45 min up, we cruised up averaged 24 minutes it is steep and consistent up, but I don’t think this hike was extreme. Its hard at the top but not a hard hike.

The top was full of bugs around the mailbox, it was gross, I think someone put food inside.

I would do this hike again just for the view at the top.

Great views and well maintained path. River was great to dip hands and feet in to cool down.

Unfortunately was really crowded on a warm August day which can be a downer when other people’s loud conversations and kids throwing rocks into the river is not the main point of going into nature.

Other than the too-many-people

Very beautiful hike!

So beautiful! It’s a tough hike with all the switchbacks, but well worth it on a clear day. I highly recommend this one.

Most beautiful ever ever! Colors are everywhere! One of my best fall hikes!

As others have mentioned the hike to the falls is great, but afterwards it's not marked at all. I downloaded the GPX to my Garmin but it didn't seem to match the actual trail so wasn't much help. I reached a ridge line at the top of the falls but turned back b/c I couldn't tell if I was still on the trail or not. Trekking poles were useful to me on the more difficult parts.

October 13, 2018. Hiked up the old trail and down the new trail to try and save my knees. The 4,000 elevation gain was great for getting the heart rate up which I love. The 360° view at the top was beautiful. I could see Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker, and Glacier Peak. Lots of people at the top. Met a friend down at the parking lot and hiked the whole way with him. Even went on an extra adventure from Mailbox Peak to Dirty Box Peak. Today was beautiful with blue skies and a high of 63°. Didn’t need more than a t-shirt...and extra deodorant ;) Enjoy!

Had a great trip up the old trail, over to Dirty Box Peak (just for fun), and back down the new trail. Weather couldn't have been more perfect and made a new hiking friend along the way. Views were awesome today!!

Loved doing this trail in early October! Such a beautiful time of year here. The bridge for waterfall viewing was magic. The trail took us about 2 hrs out and back, and was much steeper than I had imagined, but a good workout.

Easy and beautiful hike!

Went up on a beautiful fall day and it was a nice hike. The way up is nice and we went off trail up boulders before the peak which added a nice effort. Great view up top but would imagine it’s crowded during the weekend.

Started the hike on oct 1,, at around 7:30am, took about 3.5 hours out and back. The fall colors were amazing in this little valley before the final push to the summit and the top was covered in clouds which looked surreal. It was a bit challenging, my legs were pretty tired from the few hikes we did the day before so it felt like the switchbacks went on forever. there weren't very many people on this trail, we did see someone with a dog so dogs can definitely do this hike. There were blueberries that lined the trail which made for a great snack on the way up.

Great trail!!

Went up the Old trail and down the new trail. Be warned, the old trail is VERY difficult and slippery when wet. The views from the top are OK.

Great hike! My ass feels like it got the workout of a lifetime.

Finally did it today! I arrived late, around 2pm. Wasn't too difficult going up but I took lots of short breather breaks. I had the hardest time on the rocks going up but going down them was almost worse lol. The view, and the sentimental moments spent at the mailbox, made every footstep worth it. Because I had a late start going up, I was forced to run most of the way down to avoid getting locked in! (Gates close at 8pm!!!) Saw lots of people dressed lightly, but warm as it is super cold up top. BRING TOO MUCH WATER!! :)

Super beautiful !! A few inclines but nothing too terrible !!

Freaking awesome hike! It was pretty overcast the day I went and it’s crazy going through the clouds at the top. A little scary to be honest bc the fog is so thick that if you got off the rock path you could be lost forever..but worth the pic at the top :)
