Arrived at the trail head at 8:30 on Saturday morning. Parking lot was full but there were a few spots on the road available. Trail was mostly shady with some good views throughout. Easy incline on the way up all down hill on the way back. Trail was fairly busy. Overall a solid hike!

Lovely easy-moderate shaded hike. Steady trail to the summit, but would say the moderate comes in given distance and endurance needed. I think you could go later in the afternoon and not be too affected by heat. Quiet morning on a Friday. I’ll be back again!

One if my favorites. Gentle incline with beautiful flora. Shocking number of non maskers for some reason

Perfect for a day hike or multi night backpacking trip. Backpacked and spent two nights here and it was amazing. You’re not that far from the other lakes so you’ll see many hikers coming all around to summit the peak. Expect a ton of wind burn depending on the time of year you’re going. Overall, I would come back for a day hike.

Mountain bikingGreat!

Biked this route from Hicks road. Good amount of climbing before you even hit the start of the trail (on this map). A good amount of trees, so it's shady. Today was smokey (AQI 120 off purpleair) and windy. View up at the top is nice I think? Couldn't see anything because of the smoke. The building at the top is cool to see

Came over on the Labor Day long weekend, the lake was very crowded and the trail around lake was also a bit crowded. Once we got to the pinecrest, there is NOBODY. Other than a few mountain bikers. Seems like a good place to mountain bike. Long trail and more steep slopes towards the end. Definitely bring lots of water. The only problem is that some paths were a bit harder to find.

3 hours to summit. 5 hours, 45 minutes out and back (including 30 minutes at the summit). Please Please do only clockwise, like many others have noted. Don't even know why AllTrails is suggesting counter-clockwise.

Absolutely gorgeous! The drive up to the trail head is a bit curvy, maybe not great if you have motion sickness, but it was alright. I went on a Saturday at 4:30PM, and there were plenty of parking spots. The vacancy might be because of the air quality, but the smoke wasn't as bad up here and I felt like I could still see a good amount of blue skies. The trail itself is well-maintained, only needed the All Trails app to figure out where to start and then the rest was easy to figure out from the signs. Also, lots of shade (I'd say maybe ~60% shaded), and the parts that weren't shaded didn't even feel that bad because of how breezy it is up there. The incline is also gradual, and it isn't really a straight up like Mission Peak. There's some up and some down, and the incline felt very doable. Overall, highly recommend!

Did a slight addition to the trail to get to Big Lake. Definitely worth it. Awesome views and large granite slabs for the last mile getting to Big Lake. Trail was somewhat overgrown and difficult to follow after buck meadow creek.

HikingGreat!

Hiked in yesterday. It's the Pacific Crest Trail so it's easy to find. It was challenging because of the elevation and the distance was about 12 miles in and out. About 4.5 miles in you will pass Latopie Lake on the left, continue on the main trail and watch for the spur that veers off to the right. There are some rocks that line the edge of the path where it starts. You will see cairns ahead too. It's easy to miss because it's all rocks at that point.

Hiking

Drove up and car camped at Crabtree on Friday night (8/21), hiked out to Gem Lake Saturday, and made it back to the trailhead by early Sunday afternoon. Beautiful trail with a variety of lush green meadows and rocky terrain. Weather was perfect (other than smoke from the wildfires rolling in and out periodically as we got higher in altitude), although some stretches of the trail (particularly the hike back down from Gem) were completely naked of trees—the trail got hot so it stripped but we couldn’t. Ha. Most creeks were dry so we survived off of lake water + purification tablets. Gem was beautiful to camp at and swim in, but make sure to stop by Grouse for a dip with an a-moo-sing view . A good amount of mosquitoes, but nothing a little bug spray-down every few hours couldn’t fend off. This trail also seems to be moderately trafficked by horses and pack mules with groups on pack trips—you’ll be able to see (and smell) the abundance of “presents”, “trail markers”, or whatever you wanna call them on your path. We did pass by a handful of groups on pack trips with horses and pack-mules, making the trail a bit dusty for the time being, but might as well make the insides match the dusty, grime covered outsides! Overall wonderful trail. Easy to follow, beautiful views from high up, and an abundance of lakes, also a perfect weekend hike for a beginner backpacker (my hiking buddy did it and made it out ashy and achy but alive!) Would’ve loved an extra day or two to hike out to Buck and Huckleberry Lakes, but the five or so lakes you’ll encounter on this trail will make the grade.

Super windy, elevation gets you from the beginning; 8.5/10 difficulty and sometimes hard to figure out the trail towards the peak. Overall not too sore the next day but definitely fatigued! Start early and low traffic will be at your favor

BackpackingGreat!

Did this trail Saturday-Monday this past weekend. Arrived at trailhead around 12:30pm and parking lot was pretty packed. Trailhead was a bit confusing about upper or lower loop towards Gem or Wood Lake, but ended up starting on the lower loop. Camped just before Wood Lake with a gorgeous view of sunset and sunrise. Stopped at Wood Lake next day and did a loop of Huckleberry Lake- highly recommend! Got slightly lost on the way out past Piute Meadow towards Crabtree (maybe I’m just horrible at following trails) but regained. Overall a BEAUTIFUL trail. Limited water until you hit the lakes 6-7 miles in, so pack appropriately, and recommend staying out near the lakes for at least 2 nights. August temps meant perfect swimming weather even in the early mornings and late evenings and caught some gorgeous sunrises. Recommend camping at Deer Lake. Gem is pretty small. NO bugs which was amazing. Trail can get pretty exposed, so definitely keep water on you, but the shaded areas are beautiful, and the views from elevation can’t be beat. One of the most beautiful hikes I’ve done- if not challenging (especially if you add on the full loop and make it to Huckleberry)
