great views from the top i only came back once but been thete serval times taking different longer rounts

First off you have to bring your own whiskey. Second off byow (water). The trail starts out with fascinating foliage and scenic views. Although beware because there may or may not be an enormous aggressive snake running rampant through the trails. Later on, the trail begins to ascend about the same rate as a child’s playground slide although with slightly more igneous rock. You also may encounter feral badger as we had to remove one from a cholla cactus (see photo). If you choose to bring a metal detector, you will not be disappointed. We may or may not have buried some treasure ;) You’ll eventually reach a fork in the trail where you have to decide if you actually have aspirations in life or you are a total piece of trash that takes the easy way out. Be aware of various attire you may encounter on the trail (old man shorts). Make sure you are mentally prepared for that. Once you reach the the summit, enjoy your climax. Eat the Cheetos drink the whiskey and descend a new person with an optimistic view on life. This was truly life changing.

this Trail is pretty much all uphill with a few breaks and not any switchbacks and is out and back ...completed this hike not very many stops in about 3. my recommendation is to bring good traction shoes with trekking poles especially going back down if you reach the top of Castle Peak. A lot of loose Rock. I would definitely go again but with someone who was more adventurous and would be willing to stop to take some pictures. stunning views but be ready for sudden changes in weather especially going in October/ November

This a great, local, high altitude, hike to train on if you are going to be doing other hikes like the Inca Trail. I credit this hike for making us very well prepared for our trip. I am a little late with a review as snow has already begun to accumulate but in early October the trail was mostly clear. Hard to follow at the beginning through the ski resort and construction. Just look for the signage. Above the treeline it is incredibly windy (like have to hunker down at times windy) and cold. I recommend a very warm jacket / windbreaker, warm gloves and a hat. It is hard to appreciate the amazing view from the top if you are freezing. Take the time to go see Williams Lake if you can. We had lunch there and it was beautiful.

Difficult but worth it.

We loved this place, could only walk part of it a few days ago due to approaching darkness so went again today to walk the entire trail. Many places to stop and relax to break up the trek. Terrain is easily negotiated.

got this one knocked out right as it started to snow on November 21. I wish I had known that you are able to drive in the first 1.5 or so miles past the gate. Also checked out Andesite Peak on the way back.

Beautiful trail. The printed trail guide adds some interesting info to the hike.

Beautiful, only able to get to Williams lake due to heavy snow in the past month. Trail is easy to follow and packed down good to the lake (very popular hike) I tried going up to wheeler but it’s still soft and deep snow. Not many people summiting anymore. A hiker coming down informed me the trail disappears after timberline so it looks like next year will be my summiting chance.

Awesome hieroglyphics.

I did this a little less then a month ago. I was alone the entire time and the trail had mud and snow but the solitude and the views made it more then worth it! Not to hard of a climb to get to a point where I was at a view where I counted 12 lakes!!!! I dont think I made it to the Crest but the snow got at least a foot deep and was hard to see the trail by this point. I was highly satisfied with the situation and stayed at my viewpoint for at least an hour and thought in silence about how great it was.

Nice trail! Great for anyone new to the area, well marked and a good amount of use. Little chilly once you get close to the summit. Water, hat, gloves. Great views of Santa Fe!

Amazing

As someone mentioned before, this is a great trail for an easy overnight backpacking trip. Beautiful views and fall colors. The trail is in good condition and is easy to follow. Park at the "upper" parking lot next to the road (not in the Picnic Area)- they don't care if you park overnight as long as you don't camp within 1/4 mile of the trailhead.

My brother and I were on a mission to hike this trail and find the springs! We failed the first time and somehow took a wrong turn and ended up on a strenuous hike up to a wooden teepee and campfire! It was beautiful but we really wanted to see the springs. Two days later we attempted again and finally made it! We still aren’t sure how we got so off trail the first go around! When we finally made it we were awe struck! The views are spectacular and made it all worth it! The springs were not as warm as we expected but we could have cared less because it was still amazing! We met some great people, swam around and relaxed, walked to see the falls and had lunch on a rock in the middle of the mountains. It was such a great day and I think I speak for my brother and I when I say I would highly suggest this hike to anyone!!

Great trail, easy at the beginning but then a nice workout uphill

Fun. Slippery when the rocks are wet. Perfect for a drizzly day.

Well groomed trail. Some areas steep climb. Relatively open to sun but frequent opportunities for shade. Beautiful!

Nice hike. About 4 miles RT. Easy going switch-backs make the climb doable and enjoyable. Nice views along the way.
This is from the perspective of a 67 yr. old in decent condition. Even at my slower, smell-the-roses pace and hanging out at the peak for 20 mins, this trip was 2hr 30min. My 20-something kids were much faster.

2nd time around..get up there to see a fire at around donner lake or hwy 89 yesterday..makes u realize hikers vulnerabilities..great views and great scramble up once you get up past first turret..not a trekking pole hiker but they may come into play on way down..

Cool blustery day but perfect for the up hill sections. Beautiful views of the valley. Only a few hikers on a mid week October hike. Definitely worth the effort..

Did an overnight trip and camped at the lake. This was such a great experience and it was my first backpacking trip. I would recommend and will be back!

Quite windy today, but beautiful skies and miles and miles of visibility. Trail is in good condition, although a bit loose going up the last 3/4 mile (all walkable if careful)

Trail and hike are generally good, but lots of construction along first 0.5-1 mile from parking lot. Hiked all the way up today, but wind was howling. Wind-breaker and warm hat a MUST, and you’ll want gloves too!

Beautiful trail!! Love the atmosphere there! Last mile is the hardest but as soon as you get to the top makes the whole struggle worth it!!! It is very windy and cold at the top so bundle up.

The good: shade along the way, beautiful forest, great views all the way up, cool geology (quartz and blood red granite outcropping), nice mountain breezes, tremendous views at the top.

The second half of the trail is steep and strenuous. The top is 9200 ft, and for this out-of-towner, the second half is a sustained and strenuous side of moderate. That said, don’t give up. The payoff at the top is peaceful and so gratifying. Near the top, there is a white milky quartz outcropping that feels powerful and sacred.
About the side-Trail to the overlook, we did it, don’t bother. The overlook views all along the trail are better.

This hike has great views. It's pretty moderate until the last mile, then it's steep. Bring poles, it can be pretty slippery. Lots of loose gravel and sand.
