The first half of the trail is a strenuous uphill but with a good amount of shade. Once you reach the top there are amazing views of the city, and if you follow the short Rincon trail, you come upon an outcrop of rock that is easily climbed to afford even better views. Overall a very enjoyable hike!

Easy trail with beautiful views. Dog and kid friendly.

Top ten hike!

Got there at 10am on a Saturday. The slot canyon was pretty clear but I can see how going later would be a pain when there's traffic in the narrows. Gorgeous hike, the rocks are amazing.

Decided to hike this trail with our dog today, Saturday 4/21, when our car couldn't make it out the rough road to a different section of the Piedra Lisa trail. The road to this one is paved, and there is a good-sized parking area at the trailhead. I liked it a lot better than most of the other trails I've done in the Sandia foothills. It is shaded most of the way. The trail is easy to follow (not a convoluted web of trails!). We went past where the AllTrails map ends to a nice outcrop with views. It took us 52 minutes each way. Most of the challenge comes from the elevation gain. We started around 10:20, and several other groups were out, but it was not bad at all for a Saturday.

Get there very early to avoid bottle necks in the narrow canyons. But otherwise the hike is phenomenal. The view from the top is beautiful and the narrow canyons were stunning.

Very beautiful trail with lots of interesting geology. Challenging for us amateurs, but not too much. Go early to avoid crowds.

Gorgeous views! Go early, as it gets crowded, but oh, so worth it! The tall walls or slots give shade too, so you don’t melt. High stepping towards the end make this a more challenging hike, but also interesting. Highly recommend!

Love this trail! If you want to spend the night somewhere before you hike then stay in Santa Fe or possibly North Albuquerque. Don’t bring a pet and bring $5 cash. They don’t take credit cards.

It’s a great quick hike but still a little strenuous. We went at 10:00 on a Saturday and we were done by 12:00. It was not very crowded at 10 but on our way back down it was pretty crowded. I would agree with the other comments.. go as early as you can!

Favorite trail to date.

This is a bucket-list must do hike! If you’re in the area, make this the one you do!

Favorite trail on my week in New Mexico thus far. I am not that adventurous but found this to be the right mix of challenge and beauty. The trail is very popular but worth it. The National Park pass gets you in free, otherwise it’s $5. There was another road leading up to the Memorial which was closed. I would have liked to explore that.

Beautiful views at the top of all the nearby mountain ranges and the Valles Caldera Park. I wasn’t used to the altitude and the incline is unrelenting. I had to stop every 10-20 yards near the top to catch my breath. I didn’t quite realize how steep it was until I headed back down and really had to watch my step. I’m still a pretty novice hiker, and it took me about 2-2.5 hours up (lots of breaks) and 1 hour back down. I’m not sure I would do this one again unless I more acclimated to the altitude, but it was worth it at least once for the great views which start about halfway up.

This is one of my favorites now. It’s a pretty good elevation gain but feels less strenuous than La Luz because it’s a longer trail so the climb is spread out. It’s a good blend of covered forest and open scrub. Probably a good idea to wear pants as that scrub takes a few layers off. There is still snow on the trail on the top 2 or 3 miles (March 30) but micro spikes weren’t a necessity. There are a few spots with spectacular views but most of the crest trail is set back a bit from the edge - unlike the top of La Luz. I hiked from the bottom to the tram (a little over 12 miles) in about 6.5 hours. Don’t plan on catching an Uber if your want to hop off around mile 10. Better to have someone pick you up or just walk the extra few cushy miles to the tram. It’s a pretty good workout so bring plenty of water and some poles. Oh and I saw a bobcat which was awesome! Even better - saw no bears : )

Great shady hike with awesome views at the top. Strenuous uphill and really smooth downhill. Great footing as well. Should take 2 hours or less for a regular hiker.

Rangers will push people out of the trail at around 4pm! We arrived too late around 3:30 and only hiked half the trail before being intercepted by a ranger, together with a large contingency of turned back hikers. Even so, the first half was already spectacular. Sandy ground and slot canyon allowed only one person to pass in many places. The cone shaped features are well worth the trip.

Fun trail, loved the beautiful views.

Really great hike! Get there early to for fewer people. Would definitely hike again!

Awesome hike! Great scenery! Get there early, as it gets quite crowded anytime after 11am, slot canyons are difficult to maneuver with other people on trail. Take a camera!
Wear good shoes, saw some guy doing this hike in flip flops, not good.

Took the fam and we all really enjoyed the hike.

Take water , snacks and get ready for a pretty intense hike, a good amount of climbing and amazing views. stay on the trail and be mindful of your GPS or alltrails app as there are places where it is easy to get lost. my buddy and I took 2 cars and had a few "accidental detours" that added 2 hours... ouch

great short hike with cool views of the hills. good for beginners

We headed out on the trail early which allowed for ample photo ops while hiking through the canyon and up to the scenic overlook.

Descending was very crowded as there were so many people in the narrow canyon.

Definitely a must do hike as the views were spectacular.

Our favorite hike yet, this one had it all. Mountain climb, slot canyon and amazing rock formations. Would probably rate this one on the harder side of moderate though due to the steep boulder climbs at the end.

fun hike! requires some climbing over rocks and a mild steep hike in some areas but take your time and enjoy the scenery!
