great hike!
though lots of tripping hazards (rocks and many tree roots)
After .8 miles of the hike the trail splits into 2 sections
On the left is a harder .3 mile path that involves a more steep incline with some rock scrambling
On the right is the easier .5 mile path that stays consistent with the path type of the trail. some rocks and roots in the path but easier to hike up.
Both routes are worth taking to see the beautiful view at the top!

Started at 11:30 with dog, finished a little before 5 with only a few short breaks. It was rainy at the top so no real views today unfortunately. The "hard" rating was appropriate though, especially with water on all of the big rocks in the trail coming down after Avalon things got very slippery.

This is a great workout on one of the worst maintained trails in the Whites. Nice hard work going up and rather annoying decending with lots of silt. Still, a go-to hike if you're training for bigger climbs. And the view of the ledge on the way up is awesome. Be prepared for numbnuts who have taken the tram to the top and think it would be fun to hike down. I've seen barefoot walkers carrying Uggs and entirely unprepared tourists starting down with the idea that the tram was short, so how hard could it be? Believe me, it's not a fun descent for the inexperienced.

More arduous than I remembered. Have to concentrate on yellow swatches. Brook trail was tougher and much less traveled. Great reward at top!

Overall great hike. Trail was well kept but some areas where you could definitely get lost because they look like trails as well. Follow yellow marks whole way! Even at the top!!! Also very muddy and wet, bring shoes with good traction.

Awesome hike, made the trek with my 9 year son, 7 year old daughter, teen niece, and 64 year old mother and it was an all around crowd pleaser. We all found it challenging, yet very rewarding as the views were spectacular. Looking forward to do the hike thru to the North Moat Mountain.

Great hike overall. My girlfriend and I messed up and accidentally ended up on the Garfield trail and had to turn around and go all the way back up the mountain. This turned our hike into a 16.4 mile hike that lasted over 10.5 hours. Luckily we were able to get water at the Greenleaf hut on the old bridle path. The wind at the top was intense and the sky would clear up and then cloud over repeatedly. When the clouds cleared, the views were stunning. Just be careful that if you plan on going down the old bridle trail that you don’t make the same mistake we did (the ranger said it’s quite common and was very miserable and painful)

Try and go on a day you'll be likely to have views from the ridge. I went out to do the whole Franconia Ridge loop, but there was zero visibility up top, so I decided to go back down the way I came. It was tough both ways. I'd recommend hiking poles. Use caution going down, it's easy to slip on the wet rocks.

Very easy with stunning falls and impeccably maintained paths and bridges. Short but worthwhile.

Incredible views at the top.
It should be mentioned at the beginning of each review.
Not an easy hike.... uphill from the start. Not to steep, doable, and will get your heart pumping.
Couple if their 50s. Took us 4:45 with a 15 minutes break in top.
Great.

Liked this very much. Good for the dogs and enjoyable for everyone else

great short hike with the pup, lots of beautiful views

Very FUN!!

I very much enjoyed this trail- one of the best of the area. The varied path grades and quality keep the hike interesting and moderately challenging. The payoff was excellent- a breezy summit with excellent views. I would happily do this hike again and again.

Perfect hike for families with younger children. One of the highest visual-payoff-to-effort ratios you can find.

This hike was awesome! It was very very difficult given the 60% humidity but, I could see a normal day being rated moderate. Took us about 4 hours with 4 pretty long breaks going up. It starts off very easy like everyone said and then gets progressively steeper. I never felt like I was really scrambling up rocks though and I often feel that way in the whites. The view up top is totally worth it so keep pushing past all the nice overlooks and areas that feel like false peaks. You get a full 360!! Would absolutely do again.

Did this as a traverse in one day. Left once car at Lincoln woods and hiked south from the North Twin Trailhead. Added Galehead enroute. Although it was long (22 miles), it wasn't too difficult-last 7 miles were super easy. Highly recommend if you can get a second vehicle.

on Black Cap Trail

Amazing trail for family of 6. This was our first time in the White Mountains and a perfect hike for beginners. The trail is well marked with a beautiful forest canopy to start followed by a rocky ascent deserving of some fancy foot work. The kids couldn’t wait to get to the top. What a view! Well worth it. Spent 30 minutes snacking and taking in the amazing vistas. Coming down saw many hikers going up. We lucked out not having hikers on top. Will definitely visit next time.

It is a long Trek for sure. Views are very limited and trails are very rocky. I don't recommend bringing your 4 legged companion. The only real view is on Avalon and descending via the Avalon trail will make your knees and soul a little sad. If you are looking for something nearby that is much less aggressive with a kickass view, go to Mount Willard!

A nice hike with some very scenic views at the top, but it is not ‘easy’ (at least not for a 65+ year-old who is reasonably fit). Elevation increases the entire way; lots of roots and small rocks to watch out for; and large rocks to climb on the last 1/4 mile. For me it was a medium-level hike (especially since it was hot and humid today), and a very enjoyable one.

It’s a 9.8 mile hike! I’m a new hiker in my 60s took me 9 hrs but I did it!

More an amble than a hike (lots of kids in flipflops on the trail), the falls are beautiful both above and below, but at least on the weekend day that we went were VERY crowded.

Breathtaking!

One of my favorite hikes in the area. Great views! The ascent to south baldface has lots of ledges, I personally would not attempt it in wet weather. We took our time and went for a swim and it took us about 7 hours

Amazing view, even on the second time around! Took the other side up the mountain this time, got to see the Falls, and encountered some wildlife...

Hiked with my family. Kids 12 & 8 and Dad 63. It was a tough hike. The first mile was a pretty easy smooth path. The rest of the way was pretty steep and rocky. It took us 3h 45m to reach the summit, 1h 50 min to come down. “SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE”
Views were amazing!!! Well worth it
Great day enjoying each others company!
