Beautiful view of the coast which was half of the trail, nice surprise with the lava caves!

One of the most amazing hikes I have ever done! Incredible views all along the way. The lakes are very beautiful! Took my time to stop for eating some snacks and take a lot of pictures and it was about 6-7h hiking. Highly recommend it!

Amazing! Tough for the first hard and descent was a little tricky.

Nice walk up the summit, but the bit between McKenzie bay and the ferry was awful. Minimal shade, nowhere to stop and sit, views got tedious, and walking along a flat dirt road.

Did it for sunrise, was amazing. Start walking around 2am and u will be up right in time. The way up is suitable for night walking and the beginning and end is harder but worth the view in the end.

Amazing!! No other words describe it. Such a unique hike!! We stayed at the Discovery Lodge and took the 4:50am shuttle and it was worth it! We got ahead of everyone on the trail and had it all to ourselves! Our shuttle driver warned us that there could be “gale force winds” and to turn back if it was too risky. The winds were ridiculous, but we were up for the challenge! At times we were getting pelted with pebbles! Our wind/rain jackets performed so well! Make sure to wear a good one (with a hood is a must). Took us ~5 hours to hike 12.6 miles. You must do this hike!!!!

Very nice views, but strong wind.

View at the top is insane

Steepest part is the first part-- once you get past that it's still challenging but not as tough

This really shouldn’t be one of the Great Walks. It’s not so much of a hike as it is a stroll. It’s almost entirely flat, and the uphill sections are short and not steep. There is literally not a single part of this trail that’s demanding. I hiked days 1-3 (Aowara - Marahau) in under 6 hours. Also, it’s pretty busy and only rewards you very occasionally with views as most of the time the canopy hides everything.

There are much better hikes to do around here, whether you’re in it for the challenge or the views.

Loved this hike, to avoid crowds try and start as early as possible

One of the most beautiful hikes of my life! Highly recommended!

So hard but funking good

very nice, very steep

I heard folks complaining that the glacier was mostly retreating. Sure, it is. But this hike is beautiful regardless. It's short and sweet.

Beautiful! As if you're on Mars. Reminded me of Haleakala in Hawaii. Definitely recommend having a bus drop you off on the first bus. We used Discovery Lodge and left with them at 4:50am. Early, but worth beating the many crowds that come later.

worth the climb up the stairs. beautiful.

Nice trail, a little busy south of totaranui.

One of my favorite tracks. Short and beautiful. Took me approximately 4 hrs and 20 mins. Mainly because I had a time limit of 5 hours. I rushed to the top and to the bottom. That being said, I took a long break at the peak. The views... It's something you need to experience at least once. It is steep. So eat before. Drink plenty of water before you start. Bring tons of water (I had TWO Nalgenes and I finished both easily). And bring snacks along the way.

Amazing view! Took slightly longer than 2 hours up, it’s a brutal uphill all the way but the roads are well paved. View is worth it!

4 times in one year, smashing it! great track, awesome views. Take your rubbish with you please :)

I imagine it was a beautiful hike when there is nice weather. We started the hike knowing that it was going to be windy and rainy, but we got to the top and there were 50-60kph winds and sideways rain. Everyone on the hike was soaked. Thankfully there was a hut after the halfway point to escape the incline to weather for a bit. This is a great hike though, not too difficult when there isn’t bad weather.

Incredible views over snow capped peaks and lake wanaka all the way. A must do. Very steep all the way with no shade. We took 4,5 hours including a lunch break.

Phenomenal hike. The 4,000 feet of elevation gain is tough, but the track is comparable in difficulty to hikes I’ve done with 3,000-3,500 feet of gain - reason being that it’s a smooth track (much of which is fire road style) which makes the walking easy.

Incredible hike through an active volcanic area. Magnificent colours in the rocks, lakes, and splendid far reaching views. The classic volcano shape was breathtaking especially from the flat dry lakes half way up. We took 5 and a half hours to do the walk from the drop off point back to our car. Book in advance with one of the many operators

a Nice walk. And they pad is in good condision. it is a short walk and a lot of visitors. Theater view on theater glacier is good.

amazing hike one of these best ever

Pretty boring and brutal walk but the views are great

Amazing! We went with discovery lodge and so worth it! We left at 5 in the morning and we rented their wind jackets. If you didn’t bring your own wind and rain proof (no soft shell) jacket rent them here, we were so happy with them on top of the mountain! Discover is the first bus to arrive so you have to mountain to yourself. We did it it end of November. There where people on the track but not so many and not in the morning. I love hiking but I’m not the most fit person. I had a hard time climbing those stairs and was a little frightened climbing the last part because it was fairly windy but what a view! If you don’t get a good view straight ahead, hang around a little bit it can clear up quick. Totally worth it, best thing we did in New Zealand (and we did wine tastings mind you ;)

Rocky riverbed path to the glacier. Amazing waterfalls along the way, some you can walk up to. Glacier is magnificent. Would recommend a helicopter hike if you have time and money - only way to actually hike in the glacier

An absolute can’t miss. One of the largest and most magnificent waterfalls in New Zealand. Lots of steps to reach the lookout deck but well worth it.
