Stunning views. Even when it’s nice and sunny weather, it gets cold and windy above 1650 meters

Check the weather before you go or be prepared for rain, wind, and snow. Track itself is a very smooth dirt walkway with some occasional grass. Beautiful views the entire way up, but the view at the peak makes every step to the top worth it. Don’t turn back after the first overcrowded viewpoint, go the last 1.5km to get to the peak. Oh and there’s sheep all over, super cute!

Easy short trail to lookout. Lots of landslides in the area have closed most other trails. Good bet to see the glacier on foot.

A definite must do when in New Zealand - I can't wait to do that hike again!

I’m not the most “fit” person but I was able to complete this trail! Devils staircase seriously busted my butt, after that it was awesome with amazing views.

Best short walk in town.

Amazing. Hiked it mid October, just as the snow was melting. Took crampons but didn't really need them. was a great time to go as we had clear skies and less people on the track. Still busy but definately worth it.

We went left from the car park which gave views of Wanaka and the lake while going up. Then the way down had views of the other side which was less exciting and also had a .5 mile walk around the base to get back to our car. Fun quick hike with good views. Lots of runners and dogs.

Such an amazing hike! Awesome views, well maintained track.

not worth the money. but hey it's outside and you see some stufg

I don’t think this should be considered a hard walk. Yes it’s really steep but come on... it’s a highway up to the top! No complicated steps, no changes of surface, nothing to climb. Just a really steep mountain to walk up to. You can easily reach the viewpoint after two, two and half hours and give an extra 30mn for the top (I did it in the snow weather simple tennis shoes). Going downhill is also pretty easy, you could easily walk fast or run if you wanted to. Definitely worth the view!!

Really hard, but really beautiful! Once you’ve defeated the devil’s staircase, the fun hiking begins through the beautiful landscape, the mountains and the snow. Definitely a must do when in the Tongariro area!
Do as many stops as you need during the trail, and let the nature blow your mind!

I would rate this 8/10 difficulty. It’s a pretty smooth path, no climbing or steps, but it is seriously steep! We are reasonably fit and got to the lookout in just over two hours. If you’re not in decent shape though you are going to struggle big time. I saw someone on TripAdvisor ask if they could push a pram up there... it’s 1250m uphill for fucks sake! Be warned this is a proper mountain, so it can be warm at the bottom but it was hella cold at the top!
The view is sensational. Absolutely worth it. I don’t agree with those who say that it’s a boring hike. There’s lovely scenery and when you crest the ridge you can see down the other side too.

So amazing ! We went in the middle of October and we have seen a beautiful mix of landscapes. A hot weather but also with some snow on the mountain !
I recommend you to go there !

Going to the summit is a must, great views at the top.

From downtown you should expect about 90min up and 60min down if you’re in reasonable shape. It’s basically a dirt path, but it’s pretty steep the whole way . Make sure you go 10min higher than the cauldron to get to the summit, and do both sides of the loop as they’re both nice. Quiet trail in the morning in October. I had the summit to myself.

Trek across a volcanic alpine landscape of dramatic contrasts – steaming vents, glacial valleys, ancient lava flows, alpine vegetation and vivid crater lakes, all with stunning views.

One of the best in the world!

What a beautiful hike. Bring a lot of layers. We were sweating in some parts with just long sleeves and hiking pants on, other parts had on 4 layers with winter coat, gloves, and hat. Sunscreen is a must - many exposed areas. There was a lot of (packed) snow but nothing our regular hiking boots couldn't handle. But wow - definitely one of the top hikes in my lifetime. Worth the time. It took us 6.5 hours total, completed October 18 for reference.

Was this Mars or New Zealand? amazing hike but bring a ton of layers.

The waterfall is beautiful! The trail is paved with crushed rock, so easy to navigate. The ancient plantlife puts you in another world.

Amazing hike! One of my favorite.
Bring lots of shells as it’s very cold at top!

Pretty neat falls. Well kept & marked, easy to follow track. Can get a little busy.

Great hike! The last 30 minutes to the top was quite slippery because of the snow. I was happy that I was wearing my hiking boots!

Super short walk

Amazing! Some steep bits. A walking stick can help!

This was such a great experience hiking in the snow. Crampons a definite must have. The views and the majestic alpine scenery made this hike so worthwhile!

Although the rating says it is hard it is really just how steep it is. It is quite consistent throughout. Make sure you wear well fitted good quality shoes. When I did the track my shoes weren't broken into. The last stretch of the track was painful. As long as you are somewhat fit you will be able to complete it in the time guideline.

Such a good Great Walk catered to fit people who want to try something new. Just make sure you have really good shoes because the final decent on the first day is really steep and it can be very slippery if wet.
