I consider this hike to be like a salad and steak type of hike. The road to the top (which is 2.5 miles making this actually a 5 mile hike) is rather mundane. However, when you get to the hotel ruins, it’s fascinating to explore. You then do the last pitch up to the summit to see a great Firetower and without a doubt the best views in the Catskills. We got there at 8:00 and got good parking. We were back at 10:15 and the parking lot was full. There is more parking 1/2 mile up the road, but this will add a mile to your hike. The best Firetower hike in the Catskills.

Great views of river on a fairly easy trail

The ruins were really cool to see and the view from the top is beautiful

Basically walking up a driveway. The hike itself isn't that visually stimulating but the views from the top are what make this a 5 star hike.

Great hike! Very popular though and multiple water crossings. Be prepared to risk getting wet. Small children will likely need assistance.

You can also park off seufert rd for another trail head.

Good stuff, be ready to hold your children at certain points during the trail

This was a beautiful trail. Some sections were steep and rocky, but overall it was very doable. Some of the ice at the top has turned to slush with the rain the last few days. Microspikes are needed about an hour into the trail. Use the app to tell where the summit of Porter is because it's not too well-marked on the trail. The 360-degree views from the top of Cascade are breathtaking.

Awesome views of waterfalls!

Take the Blue side to see the water falls. Best after the rain or snow melt. Leaves were amazing on Halloween weekend. Great views from the top of the hill.
Made it a bigger loop by addling orange trail, then white back to the parking lot.

Did this trail this morning. I was reading the reviews for this trail and to all the people on here saying to bring your micro spikes, thank you. Lifesaver.
When we started it wasn’t snowing but I knew as the day goes on lake placid would be getting some snowfall. The 2 hours it took to reach the peak it was snowing pretty bad at the top it felt like glass shards hitting your face. Although we couldn’t see the amazing view this trail has to offer it was still breathtaking
Definitely want to come back to do this trail on a clear day.

Very nice/easy flat hike. Beautiful waterfall. Very tall. One of the prettiest.

Hiked this in August/September. Nice hike. No waterfall at that time but the flame was cool to see.

I was ready to hate this trail. It’s just uphill for 1,500ft of elevation on a fire road for almost an hour. Which is pretty awful. I have to say, once we got up to the abandoned hotel, and then probably one of the best overlooks I’ve seen? It is worth it. If you’re willing to put up with a craptacualr hike to see some cool shit, this is the trail.

Beautiful area of New York if you want to get out of the city. Single female 30 yo and went by myself. Took about 2.5 hours taking my time. The hike itself is mostly walking up a wide gravel path, there are no switchbacks or rock climbing. Loved seeing the old hotel and the view is worth the hike. I would recommend this to all ages and levels.

No rock scrambling or anything like that and not really even a trail but still tough because of the 2.5 mile walk all uphill until you reach the top. Amazing views just beyond the old hotel and an old fire tower that you can go up for even better views.

Made this my first two adk high peaks today. Climbed with a head lamp around 5:30 this morning. Your crazy not to have microspikes and climbing.

Did this hike on 10/22/18. Started about 6:30am. The hike is relatively simple for high peaks. Low effort high reward at least for the views on cascade. 360 views on cascade were absolutely stunning. Hit porter on the way back down. Porter is a very unassuming summit as I stood on the summit but did not see a summit marker so i kept hiking. Thankfully I had service up there (Verizon) and pulled out the AllTrails app and realized I had hiked too far. 180 views on porter summit are stunning as well. Lots of ice on the trail so be prepared with micro spikes.

Good elevation gain for the length of the hike. Pretty well marked trails and amazing views up top. Pretty icy and windy up on cascade. Definitely wear spikes. Porter summit can be misleading and doesn’t offer the same amazing views as cascade but still worth the small trek out after Cascade.

Very pretty but steep hike. Trail really isn’t hard because it’s more like a gravel road but the incline does dramatically increase at points. However on my way down I did see a toddler doing this so don’t be afraid! The view is stunning!

Both trails are extremely maintained, very tourist driven and heavily trafficked (for good reasons, the gorge is amazing)
You pay $8 to park
The gorge trail has lots of stairs so I found it better to start the loop by hiking up the Indian trail, and take the gorge trail back down so you aren’t climbing stairs the whole way up.
Plus, there are more rewarding views on the gorge trail, so save the best for last.

Rained pretty steady for several hours yesterday and drove in from Cleveland to get to it. Great flow. Easy hike that you won't break a sweat on.

the first 45 min are tough as it is all uphill. the abandoned hotel and view up top are really nice and worth it :)

What a great hike! An enjoyable introduction to the ADK 4ks. I mainly hike in the White Mountains, so this trail was a little less rugged than I am used to. The trail is maintained, but could use water bars in a few places before the Y intersection. It was extremely windy on the top of Cascade--what fun! I recommend carrying microspikes if you hike this from now until April. We began early, and spikes were certainly needed. By the time we were coming down, the ice was melting and all the snow had melted from the trees. Still, would recommend traction throughout the winter for the slabby sections!

Not a good idea to hike when there is snow, ice on the ground. Otherwise it is a enjoyable hike with rocks on the trail and view at the top is spectacular.

A very nice hike. Not overly challenging, but a rewarding view at the top.

Amazing place every corner turn was awe inspiring. Lots of foot traffic with great reason because of the amazing views! Although there were lots of people, even on a misty day it didn’t take away from the experience. Lots of stairs, so if your traveling with younger children this could be a challenge for them. It’s a short hike but the steps and incline makes it feel like it’s a longer hike it maybe a bit of a challenge but totally doable. I’m so glad I finally got to go here it’s an amazing place to see! Totally recommended.

Absolutely breathtaking. Will go again

Great for taking a family to see some sights you normally don’t get to experience. The man made walkway travels over the falls. Prepare to get some spray.

My first high peak! Loved it and the view was awesome!
