Treacherous in the winner. Ice all over the trail and very difficult to avoid. Spikes on your shoes are a must!
waterfall is beautiful frozen.

Warm January day helped dry the one open trail. Good afternoon walk.

Beautiful from start to finish! My favorite quick hike in the area.

We hiked to Balsam Lake Fire Tower for the ADK/Catskills fire tower challenge. This is the only map available for the northern approach. It was a great trail. Lots of parking and clearly marked trail. I have suggested a trail edit by having just the trail to Balsam Lake for those only wanting to hike to the fire tower.

Walked this trail on a very hot day during August and enjoyed every second of it, especially the overlook points and crossing the waterfall, can’t wait to go back!

Loved the hike took almost 5 hours. I wouldn’t recommend large dogs for the whole loop. Some portions you have to climb up. I would do this trail in the summer/fall.

stunning, well maintained hike! micro-spikes and poles are a must in winter

There’s better up this way

Did this loop with my dog on Christmas Eve day. It was beautiful and safe and fun. One side is closed for the winter, but the east side remains open and easy to navigate.

Great in the winter! Felt very safe here, and there were many different length trails to choose from. Will defiantly go back, really enjoyed it :)

This is a great short hike, with a beautiful waterfall and plenty of places to just sit and enjoy the view. Best done during the summer when you have the option of getting in the water. Very easy to follow, impossible to get lost. There are stairs that lead up to the waterfall and are borderline dangerous because they get wet.

The trail has become busier throughout the years, which is a big con for me. Hard to enjoy the view at times.

Great trail and great views of the waterfalls. In winter, unfortunately, it is almost impossible to climb the stairs as it is completely covered with icy snow.

Such an incredible place to visit! We went during the snow season - incredible views, very icy.
Breathtaking place to see from each viewpoint.

Dont go down the icy steps - unless u have spikes ;)

(also camping was great up near North South Campsite)

Easy trail until you get to the 190 steps down to the bottom of the waterfalls. The view is great! Remember you have to go back up the 190 steps. Well worth it!

Very pretty! Went after a snow and the latter sections with stairs got very icey and slippery, so make sure you wear good boots with grip in the winter.

Amazing views on this trail! Be sure to check when it’s closed off if you’re traveling during the winter months!

Waterfalls after waterfalls!! Beautiful trail for hiking and trail running. Very slushy at some places and slippery at others during this time of the year. Gorge trail was closed due to the snow and ice but the rim trail portion of the loop is open and accessible.

Had a great time hiking Sam's Point Preserve and Verkerdeerkill Falls. We completed this hike on black Friday (11/23/18) on a beautiful sunny 20° day. The trails were clearly marked and the map was spot on accurate as far as measuring out the distances of the routes. On top of the mountain was about 4 inches of snow and very icy. Unfortunately the ice caves were closed due to the amount of ice but we will explore that another day. We arrived at 9am on the dot with only 3 other cars in the parking lot but saw that within a few hours of being there the cars (and buses) loaded with people started rolling in; I would suggest getting there as it opens because the parking lot is very small. Staff was extremely nice and helpful, the young woman at the front desk gives a detailed overview of what to expect and there are other staff members driving around to ensure no confusion or issues arise. The sights were stunningly beautiful for such a quick and easy hike in which you can see multiple states and an endless horizon of mountain tops. Our route from the trail head was 1 mile to the overlook, 4 miles to the falls and back and then we walked back to completed the Loop Road around the lake due to the weather. All in all with a few little water breaks and a lunch stop it took us about 5 hours from arrival to departure. We will definitely be back to hike the High Point trail and Ice Caves once the weather warms up a bit!

I didn't hike. It is closed for the season. like chained off. You would have to break in to hike.

Hiked on 11-11-18 Sam’s point , Ice Cave and Verkeederkill Fall Trail. Lots of water though after the rain. Recommended waterproof footwear.
Ice Cave is icy and cold. Make sure to dress warm. Verkeerderkill Falls view is Amazing, Beautiful trails.
The views are breathtaking. Awesome hike !

The foliage right now is outstanding. Bright green pitch pines in a sea of bright red bushes. Suggested waterproof shoes for the footpath to the fall. At times the footpath turns into a stream as you approach the fall. Probably will get worse after rains. Nonetheless a magnificent hike for variety of pace and beauty of scenery. The approach on both direction is a carriage road so do not aspect anything more than a pretty country road. Enjoy!

hiked it on 11-4-18. was as awesome as the first time. lots of water though, definitely bring some waterproof shoes if hitting it after some rain. river crossing to the falls looked sketchy but wasn't at all once halfway in. would suggest hitting up with ice caves and Indian Rock, made the total mileage 11.4.

The trail is narrow and really rocky. We went after a big rain and the trail was completely covered in water essentially the entire way. We couldn't cross at the mouth of the water fall because the water had risen so much and the current was so strong that it felt dangerous to complete the trail to even get a really great look at it. We wound up hiking a bit in the opposite direction but the view was mediocre at best and covered by a lot of trees. A lot of other hikers hiked upstream to cross but it was incredibly muddy and just covered with so much overgrowth that it was hard to navigate. I've heard that it's not great to come during the summer because there's not much water, but coming after a big rain and not being able to cross after hiking almost 2 miles on a rocky/wet trail was really disappointing. I don't think I'd go out of my way to do this one again.

I was so impressed by how well-maintained the trail is! The stairs and bridge made the trail feel very safe despite being on a pretty steep incline. Even though it was a short distance, the rocks to climb and bigger switchback near the topmost tier of the falls made me feel like I was still getting a great hike in.

I could see it getting very busy during the afternoon (and was told so by someone I bumped into on my way down), but getting there around 8 am allowed me to park in the first lot with easy access to the trailhead and have the trail nearly entirely to myself - including the upper observation deck, on which I got to look at the falls by myself for quite a while. It’s a gorgeous view and was a perfect fall hike.

Awesome views of waterfalls!

Went during the week to avoid the big crowds and it was totally worth it. It was a pretty short hike up to Sam's Point and the views were amazing. Walking to the falls was pretty easy, flat, and a beautiful walk as well. These trails were easy to navigate and the paths were pretty clear. Take a day off and try to go during the week!

Easy trail in summer and early fall. Watch out for slick rocks during rain and especially ice patches in the winter. The amphitheater midway through the larger falls is just incredible. Several people die here each year, so be careful. It helps to take a single trekking pole for balance and insurance. I did and I’m glad I did. Have fun! This place is breathtaking in October.

The first half doesn’t seem like it will be worth it but if you do the entire trail it is breathtakingly beautiful. The peak, falls, and caves make for a very interesting and well worth it hike
