Did this a while back during the summer and loved it! Such beautiful views and unique rock formations! Would definitely go back if I’m ever in this area again!!

Probably one of the toughest hikes I’ve done. If you’re looking for a challenge do this hike! Make sure and take plenty of water and electrolytes. Pay attention to temperature!! Take lots of sunscreen.

This trail has some shade from the trees and the mountain in the later part of the day.

Closed because of government shutdown. We drove out here and had to find out the hard way. The road is blocked off with 5 more miles to drive before getting to the trailhead.

No car access to this trailhead during government shutdown of winter 2018.

not as scary as I was expecting. it was a quiet day and less foot traffic made our hike more enjoyable.

Well marked trail with easy road access. Great hiking in the Slot Canyon...not to hard but fun.

Fantastic.
This is like 3 separate hikes in 1.
The first mile or so is an easy walk through the slot. Great rock formations and an easy walk for any age. One person in another group did get claustrophobic and turned back.
The next 1/4 mile of so is a climb. Some trail, some stairs some switchbacks. It is a little bit of a challenge. Some smaller kids were having trouble and it is steep. The trail can be narrow with areas to pull over and let oncoming hikers pass. There was ice on the trail when we were there but it didn't cause too much problem.
The last part is on top of the mountain. Fairly flat trail with long views of the valley and other mountains. Again- beautiful.
I highly recommend this hike. The rock formations and the slot are amazing.

Amazing hike, took 2 hours because it was leisurely. I loved going in between and on top. Stunning panoramic view at the top. Really truly breathtaking.

This hot spring is absolutely amazing. We went yesterday 12/7/18 and it was just the perfect combination of snowy and hot. The gate was open for us but the road was 100% completely covered in snow. We were driving like 5 mph all the way up. I was in a Subaru so I didn’t have an issue. We at first were the second people there but people started to arrive as we soaked. Tons of hot springs to choose from and the hike was not difficult at all. 15 min to get from the hot spring to the car but I would recommend spikes or poles this time of year as the ground was super icy!!! The gate closes on 12/14 when the hike goes from 15 min to two hours! Wear snow gear if you’re going in the winter and have fun! Super good time!

My mom and I did this trek early in the morning on our way to Santa Fe. It’s more easy than moderate other than some elevation gain, but the tent rocks themselves are amazing to see.

Just went to the hot springs two days ago. Very easy to get to although I recommend using google maps from this site and save the map offline so you can use. We did run out of service and that helped a lot. The road to the trail is bumpy. High clearance is preferred but totally not extremely necessary if you just go super slow. I’ve seen worse. The trail is nicely maintained and the walk was nice. A few icy parts and rocks but nothing even my grandma wouldn’t do. When we got to the base I only noticed two springs. One was mildly warm and the other was comfortably hot. Neither of them piping hot! We were the only ones there for a a good chunk of the time. Some guests were nude so that is something to consider. All in all it was solid and I would recommend it to anyone in the Taos area.

So fun walking through the dunes. Definitely plan on adding a bit on to your total mileage, it’s really easy to wander around and get off trail once you’re out there.

We hiked the trail in Mid-November. The weather was perfect. Mid-60s during the day and no wind. Absolutely beautiful and a great hike if you are looking for something different. You won’t find a landscape like this in many places. The silence of the place is astounding. The trail is well marked and most of it could be rated as moderate. Although the south side of the trail is more difficult and calls for lots of climbing up and over sand dunes; which can be fun but also a bit challenging for some. Eventually the trail smooths out and is fairly easy. I would recommend starting on the south side of of the loop in order to get the difficult sections out of the way early.

Beautiful just very busy

What a great hike! Definitely do the slot canyon, and if you want to avoid any crowds go early morning weekdays. There was practically no one there.

Dogs not allowed on trail

Awesome little spot and a short hike to get to it, but be careful on the roads there. It’s not car friendly by any means

Second time to hike this trail. Love seeing and visiting with people from all over the U.S. and other countries. Took more time to enjoy the views and survey the slot for the best light. Moral of this story is slow down and enjoy!

Super beautiful geology!
Be aware, hiking on a hot summer day is overwhelming, due to all the bright quartz sand, you can literally feel like you’re being cooked in the oven.
Bring water and shelter tree to tree from the sun.
just making sure you hike this in cooler weather, or plan for the extreme heat and sun.
The formations are definitely were this hike I have done it several times.

Great trail, no see wildlife but lots of tracks, hikers camp at Gila river intersection is excellent. Beautiful area

Great easy hike. A couple of places to shuffle up some rocks, but nothing my pregnant wife (2nd trimester at the time) couldn’t manage. Beautiful rock formations along the way, and fantastic views at the top. Watch out for snakes in the warm months.

Beautiful scenery and pretty easy to navigate. Highly recommended.
You will not be disappointed.

The trail was heavily trafficked on a September weekend, but the more difficult section called 'the slot' was worth fighting the crowds. Very cool formations and a nice climb to the top view point. Please wear good shoes if you go, and be aware of letting slow or fast groups pass or pull over as needed.

Great views, lighting was perfect against the mountains in the morning. Fall weather was perfect-cool, but sunny. Trail is fairly narrow and a little overgrown thanks to recent rains. Saw three different tarantulas.

As someone mentioned before, this is a great trail for an easy overnight backpacking trip. Beautiful views and fall colors. The trail is in good condition and is easy to follow. Park at the "upper" parking lot next to the road (not in the Picnic Area)- they don't care if you park overnight as long as you don't camp within 1/4 mile of the trailhead.

Great hike, horrible road - be careful or drive an SUV type of car

Closed until further notice. Completely roped off and no other hiking in the area. 10/27/2018
