HikingGreat!

A great day hike as long as you're not wearing sandals. (I doubt anyone visiting this site would wear them anyway). You can reach Sunfish Pond either via the AT or the Dunnfield Trail. The Dunnfield is more interesting visually but is very rocky in places and slightly longer with quite a few trees to clamber over near the beginning. Why not go up one and back the other? I did. When you are at the west end of the pond the Dunnfield Trail (green blaze) is just off to the right - do not take the fire road. Dunnfield is the narrow trail to he right of it. Good luck.

Hiking

First few miles above falls is steep, challenging and rewarding hike. Trail well marked & maintained.

Trailhead parking lot near the falls is not open. This added another 1.8 miles each way to the trip. Beautiful trails and views. We especially loved hemlock pond!

Running

Really nice gravel trail with a few hills. Ended at the waterfall but have options to continue, climb steps to the top of the fall, or hike back.

HikingGreat!

Beautiful trail, expect 10.5 miles if going all the way to crater lake, the added 3.75 miles is because the trail is closed way ahead of the falls. The trail starts little uphill & it’s the only hard part of the trail, atleast while coming back. But hemlock pond & crater lake is fantastic relaxing. The entire trail is beautiful enjoyable.

HikingGreat!

Great, fun hike with nice forest views. As of early sept 2020 the last 2 miles of road to Buttermilk Falls is closed so you’ll have to hike in from there, adding about 4 miles round trip to whatever you do. Check website for up to date info. We only went up to Hemlock Pond but it was a great little hike!

Great hike - challenging with nice lake view for lunch if you do the loop. 2 miles from parking lot to falls each way so 10.5 total.

With proper ankle support and hiking shoes, I'd rank this more on the moderate side as opposed to very hard. As mentioned in all the other reviews, parking is really difficult on the weekends any time after 8:30am, weekdays shouldn't be an issue according to the rangers. The trails are not that crowded once you get onto them and away from the entrance points where a lot of people hang out around the creek. Dunnfield part is really beautiful and lots nice camping areas at Sunfish pond. Took about 5 hrs at a relatively steady pace and stopping for 20 mins at the pond.

The full hike around is pretty spot on, about 10.5 miles. Parking was very difficult to find, even at 8AM. But, I did go Labor Day Weekend so I am sure that is why. Took about 20 mins and then we eventually just parked on the curb. The hike itself if insanely beautiful. My dog and I took the Dunfield trail up and around the pond, stopped at the pond for some lunch, and took the Appalachian trail back. Very rocky at parts, but I was really impressed with how my dog handled it (he’s a 60lb hound). All in all it was a little over a 4 hour hike with gorgeous views.

Trail is wide. It was a horse driven trail before. so there's no getting lost. lakes were ok. highlight was the waterfalls. you have to hike 2 miles to get to the falls.

Hiking

Been years since I did this hike. Great going up, rocky in places coming down. Doesn’t really feel like 10 ish miles. Got there at 8:30 on a Saturday and parking lots were already almost full. Not as many people on the longer hikes, but the beginning and end shares trail with shorter hikes, so lots of people, many of whom don’t know trail etiquette. Bugs weren’t bad, water crossings weren’t too high.
