Micro spikes all the way. Some icy spots as the snow is melting rapidly.
Hiked on 3/3/21 with microspikes only. Trail was well marked and packed down. Very enjoyable hike with lovely views at the top!!
Went out and back via the red trail. Trail was very visible and nicely packed down. I used snowshoes about half way but you could probably get to the top with just spikes.
Was a great morning hike. Definitely suggest if snowshoeing to use the blue trail. I went up via red trail with a couple difficulties closer to the top. Red trail and very up down blue trail is a smoother assent.
We ended up using the blue trail both directions. We missed the turnoff for the red trail as the main path continues with red trail markers!! Still the extra distance was welcome, and a good workout as you broke through a layer of ice on the snow with every step. We used snowshoes... worth it! The views were amazing!
The trail was well-marked and very pretty. There’s about a foot of snow, and the steep parts on the way down can be pretty slippery. Overall, the view was worth it
fun snowshoeing !
Sow was deep if off trail but otherwise just beautiful hiking in solitude!!!! Great day.
I'm a big fan of the Cat Mt. trail. Got up for the sunrise and was not disappointed. there are times that snowshoes would have been handy, and micro spikes definitely made it easier. Snow was about 2 ft on the summit in some places. The cache lid is broken, so be careful with it!
Loved it. Looped around, cool hike.
Nice snowpack, borderline for needing snowshoes. We went up without them on 2/6 and didn’t have any major problems, but they would have been helpful toward the top where snowpack is deeper. Views from the peak were phenomenal as usual. Red trail is our preferable trail to get to top of Cat
What a fuxkin awesome time. Great winter hike for sunset. Fuxk yea. Woooo
Definitely needed spikes in the winter. Most of the trail up is mad steep, solid ice covered by a few inches of powder. Towards the summit the red trail is pretty poorly marked but has some of the best views I’ve ever seen
Bluebird, fresh fallen snow 2/4. Wore snowshoes for the fresh 4 inches of snow. We hiked to uncas cliffs, skipper mac and then to waterfall. Magnificent views at cliffs and cairn and lovely frozen falls. Perfect 4 miles!
Cold but beautiful on the summit! Trail is very packed. Spikes recommended but not necessary.
Hackensack Mountain. If you find the bottom of a black diamond women’s hiking pole please reach out to me!! Took my 5 year old out today. First time trying out hiking poles. Neither me or my daughter had a good experience with them. Prefer just to hike with our microspikes. Beautiful view at the summit. We went up the long way and down the short steep side. Little sketchy coming down with the ropes on some of the steep sections.
A little icy in some spots but the view was beautiful.
Blue trail up, red trail down. The blue trail was very relaxing; challenging last 1 to 1.5 miles which was the steepest area. There was some ice but there was always ways around. Red trail was much more challenging. Some steep downhill areas, some of which were very icy. Wore Yak Tracks and I would say they are required. Hike was amazing even though a bit hazy at summit. Beautiful walk through the woods, quiet, white ... lovely hike!
One half of the loop is well-marked. The other half... not so much. Microspikes not necessary but highly recommended.
