I wanted so much to love this trail. It has water, great birds, horses, cool plants, and is pretty unique among places I've been in Arizona.

There was trash everywhere. I just wanted one spot on the hike where my partner and I could sit for 15 minutes overlooking the water without an empty beer can within 20 feet. Couldn't find one.

If Arizona cleans this area up, it becomes an easy 5 stars.

Awesome trail. The only think I could say negative, is I got stung by a wasp or bee or something on my wrist. Hurt for a short time, Then all was good!

Loved this trail and it’s beauty! Easy to forget I was in Arizona in July! Beautiful views, wildflowers and meandered along a river. Do not hesitate to try this trail if you are wary of the “difficult” rating. We did 2.5 miles and back—easy for even a novice like me!

Just took my 5 yr old on this hike with the family. We caught a bunch of rain, but really enjoyed the hike.

I should have read the reviews more carefully before attempting this hike. It was beautiful and SO REMOTE. We were out almost half a day and saw no one else on the drive out or back. The giant downer of the excursion was that, as other reviewers have noted, the trail is not well-marked. As a result, we took a wrong turn and crossed to the right-hand side of the river too early. We didn’t realize our mistake until it was much too late. We didn’t have enough water or time to retrace our steps and try again, so we never made it to the payoff at the top! I’m still giving this trail four stars because it was stunning. One day I’d like to return and do it right, but in the meantime, I wish some good samaritan would leave cairns or other markers just at the key junctions where it’s so easy to take a wrong turn!

Note: there was a fresh rockslide on the “road” (cliff path) probably a half mile from the trailhead. We had a Jeep Wrangler but recognized that we might actually die if we attempted to drive over it, so we parked and walked the rest of the way!

An amazing day hike. Beautiful views and wildlife sighting. If you go in the summer, be prepared for weather shifts. We got stuck in a thunder storm on the way back out.

Nice trail, high elevation does take some getting used to but as many note, absolutely beautiful, pictures do not do this one justice. will recommend to friends, and will do it again.

This hike is absolutely beautiful! You really get to experience a little bit of everything this desert has to offer. The views are fantastic and the hike easy, so even with the 100+ degree temperatures it was pleasant. Tips- Pack lots of water, be mindful of snakes!

Such beautiful scenery with a beautiful meandering creek. Lots of green. Wild strawberries! We ate along the way. And what were those blue trees? We went 10-11 miles round trip so not all the way, but good memories.
Stayed in Show Low the night before. Fantastic breakfast at Sweetheart Cafe before driving an hour to the trailhead. We were two families with plenty of kids on Fourth of July. Lightly trafficked trail that day. Finished the day with dinner and fireworks in Payson. Then a drive back to the valley. A wonderful day.

Pretty secluded trail, the creek barely had water but some rain will lush it right back up. Didn’t make it to the end due to arriving late but definitely a nice hike with lots of greenery to see

My friend and I did this hike a few days ago and it was BEAUTIFUL! We started at the East trailhead and hiked all the way up to the connection to the West trailhead. This is by far, one of my new favorite hikes! The weather was perfect and it was just gorgeous! There are several stretches where you have to go over or under fallen trees, but I think it just makes the hike more exciting! ;) The thing I found most difficult was the elevation. I was definitely out of breath as we were ascending. It’s absolutely worth it though! :)

Done quite a few hikes in AZ and this one is my favorite. So beautiful! The river was running along side it once you get going down the trail. Refreshing and cool for a mid day hike. We had our dog (60 pound) and 2 kids (11 and 13). They all loved it. We took dips when we got too hot. I couldn’t get over how picturesque this hike was. The photos don’t do it justice. About half way you get to a big open field and it’s surreal. Very tall pines surrounding you, which make you feel so tiny. Kids loved doing echo at this part! We turned around at this part because it had been a long day and we had kids. I wish we could’ve seen the end but even the 3 miles we did were amazing. One terrible thing about the hike were the bees!!!! Oh my goodness the bees, horse flies and other flying bugs. We had bug spray on but it didn’t help a bit. They were terrible in the beginning part but started to calm down just a bit later on. I had to run most of the way back because I was being chased by a bee. Don’t let them stop you from doing this hike tho!
I would just be prepared for being annoyed.

Super fun trail. We camped at the LCR the first night, then near the summit the second night. Fun if done in a loop with the 3.5 mile crossover trail from east to west baldy or vice versa. Water was fairly abundant, even near the summit along the east Baldy trail we found a flowing stream. The map on here doesn’t guide you to the summit, near the top we found that this trail map was incorrect. Easy to figure out in the end though through trail signs. Highly recommend

Very nice trail! Not a lot of shade but enough to have a cool down when we needed one. Very nice beginner trail!

One of the most surreal moments of the trip was to arrive at the trailhead (sunrise) to witness the beauty of the Salt River wild horses. Amazing. The hike is beautiful with incredible views. Be cautious as the trail is quite narrow and steep at times. The narrow part can create an issue with rattle snake encounters... as we experienced on this hike. We expect to run into all sorts of wildlife during these hikes but did get ourselves into a pickle on the trail. Our issue was upon our return to the trailhead where we encountered a coiled rattler in a covered brush area near the shore. It’s beautiful in this small patch of area but you only have one way to pass through. There is no where to climb up or around in certain areas so if your trail is blocked, it may pose additional impediments. Just be cautious and aware of your surroundings on this trail. I suggest a walking stick of sorts.

Fun short trail. Not difficult at all.

Beautiful trail!

I’ve done this hike numerous times and it’s always a good time. BUT! Note to self - do not go on Memorial Day Weekend - what is usually a very quiet and peaceful hike is nothing but boats, jet skis and loud music.

Decided to hike this on a weekend trip to AZ visiting family. I was unprepared and didn't bring gloves so I turned around at the base of the cables. But plan to buy gloves and go back tomorrow!

I was the only person out there for most of the morning but it is a holiday weekend and I started at 5:30 am.

The switch back gets you in a few places, but overall I really enjoyed the hike. I am a newbie to hiking and this has me feeling i found a new hobby/passion.

Pace yourself, take plenty of water and wear good shoes. I had running shoes only and my toes are a little banged up. Might pick up hiking shoes too before tomorrow morning.

This was my second official hike and it was amazing! Encountered a rattlesnake but other than that the view was beautiful.

Very tired but worth it. The sight on the top is excellent!

Hiked up to Fremont Saddle with my wife to get the awesome view of Weavers Needle. Started out about 7:30 am to beat the heat and other hikers. Had the whole view up at the top to ourselves for about a half hr. Made our way back down about 9:30 and met the flood of other hikers making their way up. Very nice moderate hike. Path is wide open and easy to maneuver.

fun place to use your 4x4 desert hills, water what ever you want to do, you can do it. alot of views and every now and then you will see a Lincoln Town car out there crazy.

Would rate this trail easy. Extremely beautiful. We encountered three rattlesnakes!

We went early to avoid heat and foot traffic. The beginning of the hike was in shade which was nice. Hiked to shoreline access which it really wasn't and path gets tight. Either go to Burro or stop at campers cove and return. Path gets busy after 10 am. The views are nice of the lake. Met a few rattlesnakes sunning themselves to boot.

Wasn't able to make it all the way down to Hell's Hole due to poor timing on my part. I made it to about mile 5 and had to turn back around to beat sunset. I think if I had allotted myself time to rest at the bottom, the trail wouldn't have been so tiring but a 10 mile hike with no break was TOUGH. You do have to cross the small creek at one point and I'd definitely advise wearing long pants because the overgrown brush isn't too friendly. Even though I didn't make it to Hell's Hole there were amazing views and a quiet trail. I'd recommend this hike in a heart beat for someone who's in shape and has a hiking buddy to go with!

Fun, beautiful, water to cool down by or in, lots of twists and ups & downs. Be sure to bring lots of water. We gave a couple bottles up to people that were struggling.

Beautiful day spent in solitude. Went counterclockwise starting at 11am, and ran into 3 people coming the other way. Finished around 530. Stopped halfway for a 30 minute break.

Loved the changing scenery on this hike. Went from rolling hills, to a dry riverbed, up and over the trail to Peralta.

Hiked in late April, and thought I could get away with 2.5 to 3L of water. Ran out about 2 hours before the end of the trail, making it a real adventure! I would bring 4L for this hike in the future. That first taste of cold water from the gas station was refreshing to say the least.

Would absolutely come back to this location and try it clockwise next time.

It was fun. Yesterday my friend and I really enjoy it a lot. Like the below say there’s narrow trail a lot cactus by the trail but you can walk thru just to be careful. There is couple climbs I was nervous about but friend of mine help me guide. Not too bad tho. Just my balance was not too well I will definitely come back. Perfect weather tho 80s. There’s shade where you get surrounded with tree it’s beautiful

Love it, beautiful view.
