I disagree about the trail being easy as well. There are a lot more trails in here than the 2.7 mile loop mentioned. I've been hiking Neale Woods for over a decade and it remains one of my favorite spots. It's quiet, peaceful, and beautiful. There are numerous trails ranging from easy to difficult. You can get a trail map (of which there have been changes over the past year) by following this link: http://fontenelle.flywheelsites.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/NWTrailMap.pdf

Beautiful trail. Hard to follow at times but beautiful.

Not bad for Nebraska. Some decent inclines, decent views of the river, and trail is in good condition. Take bug spray!

Tried it for the first time today. Very nice with just the right amount of ups and downs for beginners. We will do this again!

Unusual rock formations. Be sure to grab the numbered pamphlet with the explanations and descriptions.

love this unrated place.

Amazing... like you're on another planet when you're there! Bring some shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and that have good traction so you can climb all the cool hills and rocks!

BRING BUG SPRAY! We used 40% Deet and did pretty well against the mosquitos. Anything less that that you might as well just run back to the car!

Really cool area, lots of fossils if you are paying attention.

I hiked the full loop of around the lake. (7.2 miles)
West side poses more of a challenge due to talker grass. East side of the lake is more geared toward day campers, trails more maintained. Over all Great Lake views and a good day hike .

Definitely more of a biking trail than a hiking trail, but not bad for a walk.

Excellent, well-maintained trail in a scenic environment. There is a lot of variety here, with ups and downs, lots of trees and vegetation, plenty of open spaces and of course, the beautiful lake. This is a long walk that may be difficult for toddlers and I know my small dogs would never be able to make it the whole way around. The path is large enough that it is definitely wheelchair accessible. I went on a Friday morning at 10:30 am, so I did not experience a lot of traffic on the path. The bicyclists I encountered did a great job of announcing themselves. I will definitely do this again. It feels so secluded despite the fact that it is so close to the city.

I didn’t exactly follow this map, but I really enjoy this park. Not too difficult but you can get a lot of miles! We wandered into the section of the park that I think is mostly used by bikers. Really beautiful in that section but we did end up getting lost because there are a lot of forks and no signs.

We walk here all the time. It’s the best park in Omaha for a long walk. You will however see a lot of people here, so if you are looking for a secluded area you might want to go to a park outside of city limits. That being said we enjoy this park! You see deer, birds, turkeys, hear owls in the evening and there are also tons of mulberry trees in the summer months.

We walk here 4-5 times a week and seen Turkeys, geese, turtles, deer.....

Nice trail. Practiced hiked with a 33 lb pack. It’s a bit more difficult the further east you go. The description says it’s a 5.1 mile loop. I’m not sure what loop they are talking about, but it’s a lot more that 5.1 miles. Hiked from car lot and went 2 miles east to all the switchbacks, then returned, totaling 4.1 miles. No way the ‘red’ path is 5.1 miles... lol.

I enjoyed this hike. The lake is really pretty. Lake trails can be pretty flat and boring, but this trail runs through forest and prairie and had some ups and downs. I appreciated going through different landscapes. I did find, as others said, that while the east side of the trail is well maintained, the west side is pretty overgrown. The trail gets pretty hard to make out. But I just followed the map on here to make sure I was going in the right direction, and that worked pretty well. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE BUG SPRAY AND WEAR A HAT. I go hiking a lot and bugs are obviously inevitable, but it was excessive here. Found five ticks on me when I got home, probably from walking through the very tall foliage on the west side of the trail. I think next time I would hike the east side up to highway 36 and just turn around and hike back the same way instead of doing the loop. But I still would recommend!

Great, secluded place to hike close to the city. Just don’t forget to douse yourself in bug spray! This hike is listed as easy, but I disagree. Much of the hike is in and out of ravines, which means a good deal of hiking uphill. I went in the late afternoon on a Saturday, and saw deer and turkeys. There were only a few other cars in the lot when I arrived so the trails are not busy. I enjoyed the solitude as I only crossed paths with one other hiker. I would think this might be a difficult hike for toddlers and it is not at all fit for strollers. The trails are decently maintained and I will definitely hike here again!

The trail is actually about 9.8 miles long. Fun little trail in the West Omaha area. Not a difficult trail to bike; I would rate it a beginner trail, but there is fun to be had.

I always enjoy hiking at Neale Woods! The trails were pretty well maintained for the most part, well labeled, and there are maps available at the front entrance. The views of downtown Omaha at the beginning are amazing. Worth coming just to see, even if you don’t hike. But there are also some really pretty trails through the prairie, the woods, and on a hilltop. The hike can be easy or more challenging, depending on what trails you take. The recording on here only has like 2 miles, but I did almost 5 when I went, and I definitely could have done more. There’s got to be at least 8 miles of trails if not more. I like this hike because it’s only a 20 min drive from Omaha, but is completely secluded! Definitely recommend if you’re in the area.

I was surprised by Chalco! There was a lot of nature and wildlife for it to be in the middle of town. But the lake is really beautiful, and the surrounding prairie and wooded areas were pretty as well. It is not much of a hike, more like a walk, as it was mostly flat and paved, but there are little grass trail offshoots that were fun. I also liked that it was almost 7 miles, since I like to hike/walk more than 5
miles a day. It wasn’t crowded when I went, as others have complained in reviews. Would definitely recommend for a relaxing walk with a great view.

I absolutely loved Fontenelle Forest! The trails are clearly labeled, and you can find a map online or get one at the visitor center. The forest is beautiful, and there’s also a prairie area with a lake if you’re willing to hike pretty far! As someone who typically hikes 5+ miles, I appreciated that there was 10 miles of trails available. The biggest drawback is the $9.50 admission price :( Overall, a great hike. There is a lot of up and down—I would call it moderate. Highly recommend!

About 15 miles off the main highway in this area. 10-15 miles on a gravel road to get to it but well marked so you won't get lost. No visitors center, just a trail head and great rock formations. Sod house near the trail head to see. I think the fee was $3 and it's just a drop box with a sort form. Trail is very well marked and kept. Black posts to guide you along the way. Our five year old was with us and he absolutely loved this trail. We were in the area so it made sense for us to stop. We don't mind gravel roads in western Nebraska to find a good trail. About 20 miles from Fort Robinson, this would be your nearest area of convenience. If you are in the area it's worth the stop.

Very much enjoyed hiking here. The little waterfalls are beautiful and easy to find. There’s a cool scenic overlook as well. I thought the hike was easy, but I stayed on the west side of the park and didn’t go over to the east side. However, planning on returning as there’s supposed to be another scenic overlook on that side of the park. It wasn’t clear on the map how to get over there, but they were able to explain how in the office. Overall enjoyable and scenic hike, seems like it’d be a good place for kids, too! Not too busy if you go on a weekday.

Hitchcock is beautiful! There are some amazing views of the Loess Hills and Missouri River Valley if you’re willing to climb. There are lots of trail markers so it’s easy to navigate as well. Hike can be easy or challenging depending on which trail you take. The map has the trails labelled by difficulty which was nice. Overall, a gorgeous scenic hike, good for all skill levels.

I really enjoyed hiking here. That said, it is really a bike trail. It can be challenging for pedestrians at times because the dirt trail is narrow and it is hard to see bikers coming. I would not recommend this for dogs or toddlers due to the need to react quickly when a biker comes along. I hiked late morning on a Friday and didn’t see anyone else in the trail. Be forewarned- if hiking in the middle of the day, there will be very little shade. Late afternoon is a better time as there is more shade. One more thing, the trails can be very confusing because there are so many of them and I imagine they change occasionally. This was a fun and challenging hike!

A family favorite for nice paved trails with a few small “nature trails” that provide variation. One section of trail is currently closed for renovations, however there are some connection options that still provide an opportunity to complete the loop.

Decent trail and nice for a quick ride near our home. On the downside there are tons of people which today included several groups
Of teenagers smoking marijuana and an Asian outdoor party that was playing karaoke loud enough it could be hard across the lake.
