Hiking

It’s a decent hike. All uphill and then ALL downhill. Switchbacks are way better and give you breaks (and some shade) from the straight up gravel service road.

No view at the top, like everyone says. But a good quick smoker. Right outside town and easy to get to with any car. Good beginning hike. Dog friendly. No bugs and not buddy. Benches at the top. Porter potty at the bottom.

Nice views but we did the gravel trial not knowing where all the others went. It was nonstop uphill with not many breaks.

Pretty falls. Not really a hike or park though. The falls are right near the parking lot.

Great workout, really pretty forest! Definitely don’t do the gravel trail, take all the little switchbacks you can.

No vista at top. Zillions of blackberries on off gravel switchbacks. Would not take gravel road. All paths lead to top.

Not a hike at all. Falls are less than a few hundred feet from the parking lot. Decent sized waterfall

You MUST have a permit from JBLM range control to be on this trail or there will be a heavy price to pay. Don’t be the one that gets caught, not worth it

From the view of the falls, take the trail around left perimeter, a much safer way to get to water above the falls.

The first thing to know about this hike is that it is on Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) military property. This is Training Area 10, so you need an Area Access Pass from Range Control. The Range Control Area Access Office is located in Building 4074, at the intersection of Stryker and Kaufman Avenues, Main Post, JBLM. The pass is free, is valid for two years, and grants access to all open training areas on JBLM. This is a great hiking area. The trail right next to the marsh is a little overgrown, but still easily followed. There are also a number of dirt roads and side trails that make for a great walk in the woods. You could easily spend the day exploring the area. This is a great place walk your dogs, and there is evidence that the area is used by horseback riders as well. The area is lightly trafficked. We were there on a weekday morning and only saw one other hiker, and later a Range Control truck drove through the area near the end of the day. While looking out over the marsh on a clear day is nice, there are no spectacular views in the area. This is just a really nice place for a walk in the woods, or a run along the dirt roads that wind through the area.

HikingGreat!

Excellent hike! Saw some trail runners. There is a pretty steep part at the top and the climb is pretty tough but I loved almost every second of it! There are a couple picnic tables about 1/3 of the way up on the south side of the trail. Excellent view of Reineer toward the top too. a couple great views of the valley and if your kids are decent hikers there is a fair bit of uncrowded area for them to run amuk as you climb. Lots of sun and shade.

Did this as a trail run on a Sunday morning. Fairly lightly trafficked around 10am. Pretty setting for a good workout. The other reviews are accurate that there are no jaw dropping views.

There was some beautiful trees and wild flowers along the route. But, there were so many routes it easy to get lost and hard to know which one was best.

I have done this hike multiple times but usually just take the gravel trail up. This time my kids and I (6 & 8) went up the switchback trails instead and it was much nicer. There isn’t a view at the very top so definitely take in the viewpoint on the main gravel trail on your way up.

The hike up the gravel road is quite the incline. Once you get to the forest trail there are a few spots where I wondered if it was the trail. Saw some mountain bikers. Was a great leg workout.

This might be considered a cute stop on the side of the road with a super short walk thru some trees to the water, but it's so short I'm not sure you can call this a hiking trail. The "waterfall" is a big storm drain where the ground water from some Buckley/Bonney Lake neighborhoods drain down the hillside. There are always sketchy people in the parking lot, and the place looks like it branches from someone's backyard. I took my Mom & kids here and later looked at a picture we took... there was a person hiding in the bushes peering out at us. This is known to be a hangout place for homeless and high school kids doing drugs. Won't go back here.
