amazing hard hike

It was a beautiful scenery with lots of greenery & water. The hike was moderate I did it with my dog, puppy,& 2kids. Ok now the negative we picked up a TICK but luckily it didn't attach to anyone yet. So before you go out here put on your deterrent & protect your fur babies!!!!

Pretty nice, very easy. Keep an eye out for the rattlers

For a continuous moderately paced hike, you can make it up to the summit in 1 hour. If you start right before 7 the mountain will shade you up until the last mile of the hike. Between 2- 1 1/2 mile point from the summit there seems to be an endless set of steps that are pretty challenging. Past the potato chip rock there is not much else and a radio station that ruins part of the view, but overall a decent hike.

Great hike spot if you’re looking for a quiet place to enjoy some beautiful scenery. You make the hike however long/challenging as you like with the various trails you can pick once you get to the top! Starts with. 1.5mile trek up the mountain, but once you get to the top you have several trails to pick long or short that offer lake views, ocean view, or overlooking all of Escondido’s city. Highly recommend! Grab a map from the resource center in the parking lot for a guide on which trails you want!

Awesome trail, friendly people along the way just enough incline to get a good workout

Did on a hot day. Bring a lot of water! worth it for the fun potato chip rock pictures!

Enjoyed this trail, scenery was beautiful

This hike makes you work for it. One hour up & 30 minutes down. I started before the sun and there were plenty of other friendly folks on the trail.

I hiked this trail both on Friday at noon and Saturday evening. Awesome hike up and awe-inspiring run down. My quads are on fire!!! Go early to avoid summer heat but doable (take enough water). Evening hike was the best. Approx 2-3hrs round trip. Weekday hike and evening no wait to take picture on edge aka Potato Chip Rock. Great trail will do again and again and again!!!

Fun, beautiful hike! We saw many coyotes and rabbits! Very scenic and lots of shade. I would definitely recommend to others who are looking for a long, somewhat challenging at times, hike!

Very hot! Would be best early am hours. However it was a very nice work out.

A challenging hike with beautiful views!!! The potato chip rock at the peak was indeed very instagram worthy..

a nice, easy hike. good for a trail run, for sure and very pretty.

Great workout

DEFINITELY read these reviews before taking this hike!!!! It is worth it once you get to the top but getting there can be challenging especially in July when I went!!! Bring lots of water, hat, shades, and wear light clothing. Enjoy the workout!!!!

We started at the Sorrento Valley Rd Parking lot, crossed over to the North Trail at the Wagon Wheel Crossing and stayed on the North Trail until the Carson's Crossing when we returned back on the South Trail. The waterfall wasn't much of a waterfall due to lack of rain recently, but the area was still pretty. There is a lot of wildlife to see - all kinds of birds (even saw some hummingbirds in the trees at Carson's Crossing), lizards, butterflies, dragonflies, and scat from a bunch of different animals that reside in the Preserve. There is some shade, but not much so be sure to bring lots of water, a hat, sunscreen, and clothing to shield you from the sun. It is an easy hike with minimal inclines. The trail is a mix of loose sand, packed sand, hard dirt, loose rocks. There are a lot of unmarked trails connecting to the main trails so make sure to bring a map to keep track of where you are. The bathroom at the parking area is a single portable toilet. Signs at the trailhead indicate the area has ticks, but the paths are quite wide in most places and easy to stay on the trail - doesn't hurt to use bug spray just in case. We went midday on a weekday and only saw a few other people (some on bikes and some walking) - however, I can see how this can be a busy trail during peak times.

Loved this trail when I hiked it the first time. Unfortunately, I went at 7am and the trail was closed due to excessive heat. :(

This is an amazing hike but NOT FOR THE SUMMER! I went with a group of 6 including myself and we left way too late. Should note it was the end of July at 10am. Moderate hike but the sun is what killed us. Legit almost thought I was going to pass out. If you go during the summer don't bring your dog, and bring a crap ton of water!

Long but easy, good for a run

Awesome! Worth it when you get to the top

Some very modest hills, but otherwise a flat walk (or run) up Penesquitos Canyon. A small waterfall at the mid point provides some scrambling opportunities as well as a place to cool your feet. A fairly easy hike, but little to no breeze in the canyon, so not a good option on hot days.

Extremely hot, and no shade at all. Wait for half an hour for the potato-chip photo. Good workout but too hot.

road biking

Next to very busy road and very ugly industrial buildings. Must cross several intersections along route. There’s a lot better places to ride your bike in San Diego. Although I appreciate the city putting in this bike path I don’t recommend.

First time here had a great time. Only went about half way in but I’m really overweight and out of shape and did 5 miles round trip pretty easily. Had a few swimming holes we swam in. Would do it again.

Great hike but it’s rated hard for a reason. I am an avid hiker and it was challenging. If you are looking for a less strenuous hike, start in Ramona. On a positive note, it is BEAUTIFUL & a great workout.

Very nice hike. Trail is well maintained and not too difficult. We started at about 6:15 am and it was still too crowded for my liking, but the scenery is beautiful and it is a good work out. If you go beyond the Potato Chip rock there are great boulders to relax on and enjoy some solitude!

We started early in the morning at 7:00 am. We had to park on the street. There wasn’t any restrooms or trash cans. The hike was very pretty at 7:00 am. The sun wasn’t out very much. The hike was mostly uphill all the way to potato chip rock. On the way there are huge rocks and lots of stunning views. We saw bunnies, lizards, a scorpion, an eagle, and even a baby rattle snake. This early on a weekday we didn’t have to wait in a line to get to climb potato chip rock. Bring lots of water, snacks, and definitely a hat. The sun started to come up toward the end of our hike. We saw lots of kids on the trail, and some people had dogs too. The views and rocks are worth it!!

It was a fun hike with my wife and our first trail in California. The scenery was beautiful.
