Absolutely beautiful hike. Decent incline near Zabriski Point. if you dont want to have to start or end you hiking with the heavier incline I recommend starting at the Golden Canyon parking lot and hiking the loop around. The view from Red Cathedral is an absolute must see!

Your passenger car (or Subaru) will NOT make it through here. Your stock SUV may not make it through here. There is one legit rock wall to climb over that you need a lot of ground clearance and good tires to provide traction.

entrance is a little long, like a pipeline road for about 8 miles but air down and you can handle the washboard at about 50mph making quick work of it. The rest of the trail is worth it. Great views thru black rock ending in a slot canyon not much wider than your vehicle for about 1.5 with walls above 100 feet. One way only.

Easy hike with kids. Nice views of the valley too

This is a ONE WAY/ ONE DIRECTION trail. Keep in mind that you must enter the way described in this map. This was not clear to me, I thought I could run it in either direction and lost a lot of time on my trip. Very beautiful trail though, high clearance and 4x4 recommended

Outstanding hike and views! We missed the fall color up here but still well worth the trip!

Oh yeah. Trail starts you at 10000 feet and hikes you incredible views of the eastern escarpment of the Sierras. Not bad for a 7.4 mi day hike.

One of our favorites

To date, one of my most favorite hikes I've ever been on. 5/5 for sure. Went on a Labor Day weekend, had the town to ourselves. Multiday trip makes for awesome exploring in the mines and structures. Read up on hantavirus. Water from the spigot is potable, made for a cold shower!

Fun to drive through.

Did this hike 2nd week in October. Some snow on the ground once you reach Summit Lake. Took a wrong turn at the junction past Summit Lake and accidentally added about a mile before consulting map and realizing mistake. Didn’t make it to Maggie in time so ended up camping 1st night at Twin Lakes where we saw 2 structured fire pits. Trail from Twin Lakes to Maggie can be difficult to spot at time so we consulted the map quite often. There’s about 10+ camping sites at lower Maggie. Recommend downloading the AllTrails map if taking this route as opposed to the easier to follow Summit Trail. Great views, worth the trek!!!!

Amazing Drive, Love driving along the river

Nice short in and out hike up a red sandstone slot canyon to a natural bridge and dry waterfall. Easy hike to the end.

Started this hike from Zabriskie Point early in the morning watching the sunrise bounce off the golden red hills as we made our trip counter clockwise around the loop. Going in this direction the first part of the hike is downhill and the return is a gradual upward walk. We elected to go this way to catch the early morning light on the hills and were glad we did. If you go later in the day you may want to start at the bottom and work your way around clockwise. This way gives a gradual up and my leave you some shadow in the canyons to cool down on your way back.

This is a nice loop hike which is on the easy side of moderate. If you don’t mind a few people on the trail I would recommend this trail as the one to take in the area. If you want to be on your own try the in and out Desolate Canyon trail we did not run into anyone.

We loved this trail! Great for a hot day. There are clear cold lakes to jump in every half mile or so. There were a lot of people but everyone was very friendly and didn’t even make comments about my dog off leash. My pup is very friendly but she is a pit bull so many people make incorrect assumptions about her. We all had a great day. I was wishing I had brought sleeping gear. I wanted to keep going and going!

Its a nice place was there during sunset and had a great time.

Beautiful trail, the lakes are amazing, our dog enjoyed it too. The trail starts at mosquito flat, just follow the rock creek road to the very end, the road to parking lot gets narrower but the parking lot is huge.

Great day. Almost no other people. Did 5.3 mile up and back.

Ok hike. To many people

Best hike ever, you will not be able to take a bad picture, the whole trail is huge a scenic view, each lake different, each unique.
Highly recommended!
Not a difficult hike, but moderate rating is correct

Great fun. Easy, interesting and you can hike and walk as other people drive

For those who’ve been on the trail recently, what are the weather conditions at the top of the mountain, ie lowest Temperature, wind speed, rainfall?

Good hike with decent views. Loved the history of the ghost town and tunnels. Easy side of moderate.

Really cool hike. Great views. Easy. Interesting ruins of Douglas City and the old train tracks.

This is stunner. I do it every time I visit the area. One of my very favorites. Word of caution for older hikers with bad knees, hips, etc, however. Allow extra time for return due to multiple "steps" as you approach trailhead. I did this hike again yesterday. I had no trouble with altitude since I live in the mountains. Took me three hours to reach Gem Lake including 30 min lunch stop at Long Lake. Took four hours to return from Gem Lake to parking area since I really had to take my time on the descent due to my bad knees. Probably best to allow 8 hours to be on the safe side. Best to get started early morning due to limited parking also. Bring hiking poles to save those knees! Those with no knee issues will complete this hike much faster though. Enjoy! It's a beauty.

FANTASTIC drive. Im a solo female in my 2014 JK--a novice off road--and i did just fine, but I was concentrating deeply to make sure my tires werent sliced up on the rocks. Also, you have to mind the curves, not just the terrain. It takes about a 2.5 hours in total if you take your time and enjoy it. At an hour in, you begin switchbacking down and up multi-colored, jagged cliffs. This alone is worth the drive from pavement over uneven, rocky desert. Watch for Black-tailed Jackrabbits. The canyon itself is more dramatic than I'd expected and there are plenty of areas where you're the only thing fitting through. This was my 6th time to DV and I'm so thankful i was finally A) in the right kind of vehicle and B) there when it was open!

can be crowded but very few places have so much to see in such a easy hike

Hiked the HST one year ago this week. We made from Crescent Meadow to Whitney Portal in 7 days (6 nights). We had big thunderstorms with hail at Precipice Lake, Crabtree Meadow and Guitar Lake. Soaking in Kern Hot Spring was a perfect break in the middle of day 3. We did an alpine start on Whitney and got to see the sunrise and lightning across the Valley on White Mountain. I can’t think of a better way to spend a week.
