One of my first mountains that I hiked. It was challenging for me and the last half mile was intense. But the view was worth it. Just over 2 hours to complete the climb!

Hiked this trail with my husband and two dogs this weekend. This was the first trail we’ve ever taken them on and the path is really even gravel. I think what makes this trail other than the views is the extremely friendly volunteers at the top.

quite boring, same from top to bottom your walking in a washed out dirt road with gravel & stones I rate it eases but bad on your knees won't be back

great hike. not too hard at all. nothing exciting on the trail, just a gravel trail that goes up. once you get to the top the views are beautiful from both the tower and the rock ledge. nothing too crazy but the views are definitely amazing

awesome light hike with a very rewarding view at the fire tower and the overlook just past the fire tower. not to mention the hotel ruins which are very very cool! Bathrooms are at the top as well

My seven year old has declared this her favorite mountain, perfect for the heart of an adventurer. She loved all the caves and crawl through rock piles. It was not the best marked trail, but we had a great time.

Lovely hike; very diverse forest; trail conditions on 9/13/18 were wet but completely manageable. A fair amount of overgrowth over the trail in some spots but still passable. A little jungle-like! As far as difficulty, I’d rate it as moderate for the average hiker; easy for die-hards; and moderate to difficult for newbies because of roots and rocks and foot placement. There are a number of boardwalks on the trail which lends a friendlier, easier feel to the hike, and offers a nice reprieve from tricky foot work just when you need it, it seems! This is an interpretive trail but I failed to notice many of the markers. There is a surprising descent-then-ascent near the summit prior to reaching the tower. The tower itself is smaller than others I’ve climbed and incredibly sturdy and safe to climb. The cab is very small. I’d say three adults would be crowded! But as I had the cab and summit to myself, it was perfect. A 360 degree view of the ADKs. Incredible and absolutely one of the best I’ve seen so far.

I was visited by a pine marten in the little patch of conifers at the base! He climbed the trunk and stared right at me for about fifteen seconds. I have NEVER seen one in person and to see one this close (maybe 12 feet away), is somewhat of a wildlife marvel, I believe!

Family friendly for sure. Large parking lot. Enjoy!

Hiked this in early may. There was still snow, but it was warm (70s by afternoon). There had been a rainstorm the night before, causing the rocky ascent to be pure ice after the first mile. It was amazing at the top, though.

We hiked goodnow on September 9,2018. Temperatures were in the low to mid 50s ideal for a hike.
Our lab, Stella hiked this with us.
The trail itself was about as good as any we have hiked in the Adirondacks. Conditions were dry and the trail was in excellent condition. There was a number of boardwalks over ravines and probable wet spots. And there was a number of stone and wooden steps cut into the trail, along with wooden traps to slow and divert rain runoff.
No views to speak of until you reach the summit. And at the peak, the view is limited. But once you climb the Sixty foot fire tower the view is awesome!!!
Kind of a scary ascent, narrow stairs and only some chicken wire to keep u safe. But oh so worth the climb.
This is a great hike, not too strenuous, yet a pleasure to walk to it’s conclusion.
And lots of hardwood trees, in the fall this must be stunning!

Great hike. Terrain was a little treacherous as it was not a simple walking trail. Parts of the trail did involve rock climbing. But has a beautiful view from the top and many spots along the way as well. Plus the balanced rocks at the top are very unique

Great little Adk lake! Lots of trails to follow to other lakes and mountains.

Fantastic hike! Roots, rocks, earth underfoot. Not difficult other than steadily steep with a few level parts. Take your time, it is a short hike and well worth the effort. Incredible views. Rock formations atop are incredible! This spot is a false summit as there is a trail heading out to the real summit which has a 360 view. We opted out this time. Wish we did not but there’s always tomorrow!

Thought be more rock scrabble .. decent trail condition nice view

Gorgeous trail. I am in good shape and I definitely broke a sweat moving at a good pace. The grade is 44% sometimes. So, although it may seem short, it is not a quick hike to knock out with the family. If it is wet, you're going to need proper hiking shoes. All said and done, that view is incredible!

My favorite hike. Uphill 99% of the way. Great ruins to explore, the view from the scenic overlook is amazing. The fire tower is not to be missed .
a lot of the trail is washed out from all of the rain this year, but still ok to hike.
Dog friendly. Lots of dogs on the trail.

Meilleur hike que j’ai fais jusqu’à présent ! La vue était incroyable. 4h allez/retour avec les pauses et le dîner au sommet. Je le recommande

It was a great challenge! Fun to climb. The views weren’t there for us due to overcast and clouds.( 9/2 )All together It was still a tough hike up for my wife and I. We made it to the summit in 27 minutes and down in 28. We are in our late 20s and newer to hiking!

Awesome,it’s a must go to. Definitely recommend this hike

Uphill hike, across from amazing Buddhist temple, cool ruins to explore near the top, and AMAZING view at the top and from the fire tower.

I admit that I'm not in my greatest physical shape. I underestimated how challenging this trail really is and I was humbled. I had brand new Lowa hiking boots and I'm glad I brought them. We had PERFECT weather. I do not believe this is "moderate" in scale. It leans more to the "difficult" scale. I live in California and hike the Sierras often. This hike was gorgeous once at the top. We saw 360°, it was windy, much cooler and the fire tower is the prize.

Really well worn trail. It's only 2 miles to the summit but it's a hell of a 2 miles. You definitely have to work to get to the top. When you get up into the cloud line the fungi become plentiful and exciting to observe. If it is cloudy and you are climbing up through a cloud the top gets really, really slippery. This makes the descent really difficult. I'm a late 20s male and slipped on to my butt at least 5 times. I would personally call this a more advanced trail. Some "moderate" trails on the app are super easy, but this was definitely not easy. I would personally not recommend this trail for your dogs or small children.

I imagine that on a clear day the views would be excellent. I knew it was cloudy while climbing up in the first place, so the views of the inside of the clouds were not a disappointment.

Hiked up on 6/1/18 and camped until 6/3/18. Lots of caterpillars at the top but it was a nice hike with beautiful views!

Hiked to Firetower yesterday. It was very cloudy so couldn’t see anything. I want to come here again during the fall season.

Simple hike. Lots of mushrooms - white, brown and orange and plenty of shade en route.

Bear sighting at the trailhead entrance. 09/1/2018 3 pm. It was unexpected and the bear was 30-40 m away from us. Spotted us and ran away. Very fit and lean bear. I wish I had my phone out to take a picture before he disappeared.

Second fire tower today. Views from atop tower are well worth the hike. It was fairly crowded being a Saturday on a holiday weekend. Great for the whole family.

We really enjoyed everything about this hike. We got an early start so we enjoyed the summit and tower for over a half hour all to ourselves. The hike is gentle on a well maintained trail. This is one of the nicest views that I have seen from a tower, and the cabin is set up so you can peek into the windows and take a trip back in time. This is a must do if you enjoy fire towers.

This was a moderately easy trail. While it is all up hill you walk the access road all the way. Bonus is the hotel ruins. The view from the tower and the overlook are amazing. A great hike!

2 mile hike at a constant incline. The payoffs are the awesome remains of an Old Hotel and Fire House as well great views and Fire Tower at the Summit.

Don't take the constant incline lightly... brings lots of water and take a number of breaks.

climbed on August 29th. The trail could be marked better, but overall...not terribly difficult to follow to the Balanced Rocks. There are some very steep sections which required climbing over rocks, proceed carefully. The trail levels out eventually and there is a tree with a trail marker that, if one looks closely, shows the direction ( to the right ) to the rocks. Proceed for a few minutes over the flat, bald, rocks and you will come to the awesome site of the rocks and the mountain scenery beyond. Well worth the effort and sweat! The trek back down is manageable, just take your time. I found this to be a fun and challenging hike with a very rewarding view at the rocks!

This was definitely challenging especially with the 90 degree temperature and humidity. We decided to do this while hiking to Echo Lake so I don't think we were mentally prepared. Challenging both ways. At the top not much of a view but there were a few nice overlooks with great views before reaching the top. I would do this again but wait for a cooler day.

We started our day (8/25/18) with Arab for the triad. We all enjoyed this hike. My daughter (10) said this was her favorite of the day. Nice and fairly easy hike from start to finish. Summit and fire tower views were gorgeous. Loved the steward and his newfoundland pups; great with children and very informative. We pulled in to trailhead at 9:50am, summit approximately 10:45, and were back in the car at 11:35. Great starting hike for the triad!
