Beautiful hike to a gorgeous waterfall, but please come prepared and bring traction devices for your hiking boots. The trail is very icy and steep at parts. A lady had fallen and broken her leg today. I hope she’s OK!

Beautiful trail. Micro spikes are necessary and enough snow most the way for snow shoes. lots of people and dogs off leash.

Need Sno Park permit, huge parking lot, bathrooms close by. Very crowded near TH and lake. We actually did a 12 mile loop on NFDR 2656 going clockwise. About 3 miles of steady incline. Snowed all day. Didn’t see many people until we got near the lake at the end. Absolutely beautiful and saw a few crazies walking on the lake. Perfect Sunday!

Did this trail on 1/20. Not enough snow for snowshoeing, but you absolutely need crampons or shoes with fabulous traction on ice. There are several areas where you're walking at a steep incline on ice.

The scenery was beautiful.

Nice trail for an easy walk with two dogs. There are only a couple narrow spots- otherwise the trail is mostly flat, wide, and dry. Good vantage points to see/access the river.

This was the first time that I did this hike in the winter. It was amazing! We just hiked in our boots. Crampons could have been nice here and there, but it was totally doable without. We passed lots of people with snowshoes, which wasn’t necessary at all. We were definitely a lot faster and more agile. The hike overall is moderate. It took us a little under 3 hours to complete the hike (out and back). The view on the summit is stunning. Very windy though. We were able to see all five mountains. Such a treat. This hike is definitely one of my favorite ones. Great in any season!

It is beautiful trail covered with snow. Some areas are very slippery. Unfortunately, I didn’t see Mt Hood. I am not sure it is due to weather or just missing it. Lake is frozen and has lots of foot print. I have no guts to step on it.

Pretty icy in spots but worth it in snowshoes. Went up on Tuesday and saw 6-8 other people/dogs. Right now you'd need crampons or snowshoes, I saw a few people that turned around because they couldn't get very far. The payoff at the lake is fantastic, it's frozen over but there are some visible warm spots along the shore so I wouldn't recommend walking on it.

Great hike with fantastic views on a nice day! It was a bit steep at times. It was very doable for us in winter.

There is now a parking area that is plowed adjacent to the Ski Bowl parking lot. If it’s winter, make sure to get a Sno-park day pass.

We snowshoed, but we would have been fine with crampons/microspikes. Icy patches made it tough for folks without.

Definitely need spikes up until about Mirror Lake and from there on out. Many people on snowshoes and in spikes. People with nothing were slipping a lot. Icy and well packed. Going up TDH mountain was relatively easy, this is my first time doing this hike in winter but second overall. Windy as all hell at the top! Sky was clear and Hood was shining!

Beautiful and scenic hike to do in the winter time; but the difficulty level goes from easy to moderate when there’s snow and ice.
A “must try” hike, when snow has fallen!
Micro spikes or something similar highly suggested!

You absolutely need traction devices on your boots. We passed person who fell and possibly broke a arm. It's a ice trail over rocks and tree roots so I recommend two treking poles to help prevent tripping, snow shoes that don't have a aggressive track on the side won't get a good bite over rocks. There was a back up at the boulder field from unprepared hikers without traction devices. My wife used micro spikes by Kahtoola I used ice trekkers diamond grippers by yaktraks. If cost if a factor check and for kids check out Stabilgear brand of microspikes at P-rkrose hardware for $19.

This was a great trail! We rented crampons which are better than Microspikes per the recommendation of Mountain Shop. The rental price was 10. Some fellow hikers did not have equipment and were sliding or slipping. Happy hiking!

Took a group of Boy Scouts to overnight at the lake . Built an igloo in the campground area. Very busy parking lot and trail during the day, only ones on the lake that night!

Did this hike in November. Very beautiful views and not too much work to get there.

Very beautiful (especially with all of the snow), but always very, very crowded. There’s a reason it’s the most popular hike on the mountain!

My first Oregon trail to hike. Really pretty Hike with a gorgeous waterfall at the end. Hiked this trail in September. Perfect weather that day

Beautiful views will do this again! Went in October good temperature and clear view

Trail was busier than I expected for it being a weekday but great hike nonetheless. Snow was packed down, using micro spikes made it much easier but could be done without them. Trail is in excellent condition and easy to hike. I didn’t see any dog poop or trash like other reviews mentioned but the first half mile did have orange peels dropped every few feet on the trail...

Such a pretty hike, and the falls are amazing!

Love this hike!!! It was way more then 1.9 it more like 5 1/2 miles almost 6 , still total worth it , you can take a way quicker way to the lake but the loop around is gorgeous. We snowshoed in for fun rentals only 15$ not bad at all .kids could total make it only one big hill at the end .

We completed this trail with my family yesterday 1/6/2019. Beautiful trail, lake was totally frozen, we could walk all the way across the lake. You have to park at SkiBowl and there are two parking lots - one for SkiBowl and other one near Mirror Lake Plaza. I parked in SkiBowl parking and I don't know if snow park permit is needed in this space.
Trail is pretty wide, well groomed and we found many people on the trail. Path from parking lot to the trail-head is well behind the freeway and I wasn't bothered by any noise from freeway. It looks like they put up new plaza, restroom and new trail pathway from parking to trail-head. Overall nice trail.

This is a great winter-time hike! We took our 5 month old puppy to experience her first snow and we couldn’t be happier. The views were amazing and there was plenty of snow to play around in.

Gorgeous hike but microspikes are a must if you go during this time of year.

beautiful even in the winter. highly recommend microspikes.

beautiful views await you on this trail - however, there are slippery spots and microspikes are highly recommended!!

Beautiful with all the snow! I wasn’t as fit as I would’ve liked to be so maybe I’ll hike it in the summer. Adding snowshoes makes everything harder. Disappointed in how much dog poop was on the trail :(

Kids enjoyed the hike and played in the snow.

We snowshoed this trail on a Saturday morning. There were a few people there when we left the car, and by the time we returned to the parking lot (before 11:00), it was packed. The total length for the trip was 5 miles, with the additional miles from the sno-park.
The lake was covered in snow and pretty. The view of Mt. Hood was spectacular.
The path trail was very hard packed snow and ice. You don't really need snowshoes for this trail. A lot of people were out there without. The trail was pretty crowded.
I prefer a little more solitude hiking and snowshoeing. This would be a good beginner trail. You don't have to worry about getting lost and the scenery is pretty.

Easy hike for my first snowshoe adventure. I could have hiked it today without the snowshoes but wore them anyway for the practice. Great views especially with all the snow cover. I even ventured out on the lake. It was frozen solid. Highly recommend checking this hike out this time of year.
