Absolutely beautiful. Steady-ish incline, but not too challenging for any beginner hikers or out of town guests. Take it at pace for a more challenging hike for anyone. Views are amazing the entire way, but especially at the end when you get to the split of the trail, to either head to the old mining cabins for spectacular views at the base of the mountain, or up the extra steeeeep leg for an additional .5 mile of upward switchbacks for another amazing view over the ridge.

Packed snow trail to the cabins and great views for the flatlanders.

Hard packed snow up to the mining camp. Could have walked with boots/spikes. But we snowshoed for fun and for the exercise. Plenty of snow for breaking a new trail in the cirque area. Beautiful, sunny day. Great place for awesome pictures!

A really beautiful hike; my friends and I chose to hike into the base camp and stay there overnight so as to get a really early start, and beat the heat (and people). We started at about 6:30/7 am and were back down at the car by noon. The most time consuming aspect of the trail is the terrain- a lot of the hike is tallis field, and footing on the scree can be a bit slow-going. Also a good note to any hikers is that there is one VERY convincing false summit, which still got us even though we had read up on it. You have to cross a saddle before you get to the summit of Soapris. Loved the hike overall, so beautiful and was more challenging/enjoyable than some 14ers out there!

Didn't complete the entire trail on my winter hike, but the sunrise at the false summit was amazing, so I was more than satisfied with my accomplishment. The 2nd incline became a class 2 with sections of snow ranging from shin deep to knee deep. Will definitely be back to summit when I have more time.

Overall an easy hike and definitely beautiful with all of the snow! The trail was mostly snow packed, so easy enough to hike. We brought our shoe spikes, but probably would've been fine without. A couple miles in, the trail does just kind of stop, with no more footprints to follow, so it's shorter than the full 7 miles, but still worth it for a slightly shorter hike.

Only hiked a small portion, but it was beautiful.

Great hike on Thanksgiving Day. Went up to the falls and a bit beyond but there wasn’t a clearly defined trail and my GPS wasn’t cooperating so instead of snowshoeing our way around, we just turned back. Beautiful day to hike. Traction devices for your boots would be helpful but not completely needed. Snowshoes would certainly be necessary to reach the lake.

Nice trail go a shot day hike

Absolutely beautiful.

Nice and steep. Did this a couple weeks ago and used micro spikes because there was so much snow packed down it turned to ice in several places. Once you get about 2.5 miles in, the trail disappeared because of untouched snow but super beautiful views even there. Would have kept going if we’d brought snowshoes up

Kind of steep but beautiful

Thought this trail was ok. It was awesome to do simply because I see Needlerock from afar all the time and was really very interested in hiking it. The trail is easy to follow, but there is no clear end point and the brush is super thick towards the base of the rock itself. Views are nice, but mostly just expansive farmland. Spent my time at the “top” listening to a nervous donkey from the farm below...

Great hike. GPS device recorded 12.5 miles. Most difficult part is the start to upper falls. After upper falls the grade is much gentler. Did yesterday, Oct 30. The last quarter mile has some snow on the trail which has become packed ice - very slippery; used the loose snow instead. 28 degrees and snowing steadily at the lake. Wildlife - saw porcupine and ptarmigan. Hiked constant pace w no breaks. 2:40 up, 2:20 down. Beautiful and fun hike. Moderate not hard. The description says ‘scramble’ but there is none.

Its snowshoe season!

Gorgeous little area, nice view from the top! Had my blood pumping but was still easy for sure.

Sweet 13er (I guess it counts as one?) Windy with plenty of snow/ice on the trail today. An easy summit overall, took under 2 hours total.

Hiked this trail yesterday 10-27-18. Very snowy like the previous poster said. After the first lake it got really deep and we had to turn around. It was also pretty slick after everyone had compacted the snow and melting then refreezing at night. I would be cautious, there were a few parts that were a little touch and go. On the other hand, beautiful beautiful hike!!

Great Hike - trails are snowpacked up high, there are steep trail sections that are snowpacked and icy. Bring your yaktrax. Almost made it to the lake by my partner forgot her sunglasses and didn't want to risk getting snow blind up high due to the wide open areas of snow we had to cross - bluebird day - high sun. Either way - great hike. Would do it again in fall. A lot of climbing right out of the lot, actually climbing all the way. Fun Hike - bring water and some snacks as you'll burn a ton of calories climbing

Really steep beginning after that the steepness levels out somewhat. It’s definitely a trek with a pack. It’s a beautiful hike and great fishing in the lake. Many places to camp and there are other lakes nearby

Great simple hike. The trail is in and out of light snow. I had micro spikes on but they were not necessary. The trail was half wet/muddy, half dry. Some deeper drifts, avoidable if you skip the upper lake but as long as it's cold, post holing would be unlikely. Snow is still shallow and sparse enough to summit Square Top Mountain as well.

Spectacular in the glacial cirque. Snow above the falls but followed the footprints and used poles. It was 5 miles to the lake - not sure why All-Trails map says 4.4. We hiked on 10/26 and saw no one above the falls.

My first Colorado hike, back in August. The whole experience was nothing short of amazing! The views were impeccable, and the journey to the summit was clear, with views for days!

beautiful hike, even at the end of October. It is a long one...took about 5-6 hours (we are Flatlanders) to complete the 10 miles. The snow slowed us down. Bring Yak Traks for the last 3 miles up...ice and snow. There were some hiking sticks left at the trail head and they really came in handy on this hike. It was hard to follow the trail on the way up with the snow but as long as you are going up you will catch the trail again. Alot easier to follow the trail on the way down. If you are looking for a good moderate legnthy hike, this one is great!

I hiked this trail on 10/21/18. Very beautiful area. However, this 7.2 mile out and back turned into 10.5 miles due to the snow. 80% of the trail had between 2 inches - 2.5 feet of snow. The snow and ice made the hike very difficult. Unless you’re experienced with snow hiking and snowshoes, I would not advise the hike until the snow melts. In the end, the snow got so deep, we couldn’t even make it the last 400 meters to grand lake.

One note though is that the first mile of the hike is easy (if no snow) and takes you to a beautiful small waterfall and small lake.

Very good hike with substantial natural variety along the way. Snow in the higher elevations (poles are handy). Still very accessible. Took me about 3 hours and 15 minutes. I lolligagged substantially at the start of the hike enjoying nature and was slowed down considerably right at the end due to snow (hard packed though and not bad to traverse). Round trip 11 AM to 5 PM, 6 hours. Third day in a row I have loved hiking in snow. Temperatures were very reasonable (had plenty of gear but hiked 100% in summer gear).

Excellent hike. Agree that 3 hours to the lake is a good time estimate. Gorgeous lake, especially this time of year with the snow. 10/21/2018, intermittent snow above the falls (about 2 hours from falls to lake, I am a slow/moderate paced hiker). Snow is hard packed and surprisingly very manageable. Poles are useful nonetheless. Weather was warm all the way up to the lake. Trail visibility excellent.Highly recommend going on from falls to lake if in doubt. Trailhead parking lot almost filled up on a Sunday (my start time was 11:00 am, very late). Was back at the car 5 PM easily.

Great Hike with views of hundreds of peaks and down 3 individual valleys, about 3 steep accents which was a bit tricky in the snow/ice, but generally a fairly basic walk. Be prepared for the altitude as that can make you short breathed easily.

Difficulty: Medium

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

The best in Colorado

A fun trail, the beginning truly is a straight incline. Ankle deep snow at the worst today (October 20), a bit slick coming down. We definitely fell for the false summit so consult your map to ensure you make it to the top.
