my dog and I had a wonderful hike. my dog went to swim in the lake and she loved it!

Beautiful hike!! The fallen leaves, old growth forest, interesting mushroom groves, waterfalls, and ending at the the lake. Loved it!

Beautiful place. The hike was easy but a bit long for my daughter and boyfriend. The lower trail is much better than the upper. The lower trail fallows the creek and is up and down The upper trail is a long gentle grade up and a long gentle grade down. It would be great for jogging but it’s not very scenic. The lake was beautiful and the views of the mountains is glorious. I would do it again for sure.

Wifey and I took the four kiddos on this trek. We had to carry two of them on our backs. The first 2-3 miles were just up hill. The lake at the end was well worth it though!

The Lake at the top is worth the climb. Got to trail around 10:20am and parking lot was full. The trail is well maintained but one needs waterproof hiking boots. Down hill was much harder since some parts of the trail have tons of loose rocks.

A fun hike with a decent climb. I started on the trail at 8:45 and ran into 4-5 groups on my way up. I started back at around 10 and the trail had gotten very busy.

Beautiful! Great hike!

Amazing.

We always skipped this hike because of how crowded it is, but I am so happy we went this weekend! Save the hike for a rainy day and you’ll have a near-empty trail. The colors at the lake are gorgeous right now. Slow and steady incline with a nearly flat walk around the lake.

We hiked this trail Sunday, 10/7. Temperature was in the 50's with a little sprinkle that we really couldn't feel until we reached the lake. Fall is my favorite time to hike to alpine lakes because no bugs, no crowds, and gorgeous foliage. Round trip, this hike took 5 hours with taking about 30 minutes to admire and explore the lake area. We took the lower elliot up and the upper elliot down. To be honest, I wouldn't waste my time with the upper elliot again... it is longer and gravel road-like. The lower elliot runs along the creek and offers diversity and more challenge. Fresh snow appeared to be accumulating on the peaks above the lake! All in all, we enjoyed it; serene and leisurely.
Also, no bears in site.

Great trail. Might be rough for small children.

Beautiful area. It took us about 90min to reach the lake. It was rather foggy while we were at the lake, which restricted views but it was still beautiful. In cooler weather, watch out for ice glaze on the raised wooden platforms as you walk around the lake, they were really slippery, but don’t look it.

It took us 3 hr 45 minutes from start to finish, and according to my Fitbit, it was more like 7.5 miles. We arrived at 8:45am on a Saturday, and had no troubles finding parking.

That first leg to the lake was tough at times since it’s pretty steep sometimes, and the return is challenging because navigating the loose rocks while going downhill can be tricky, but I still managed fine and I’m no outdoorsy, hiking master, just an average person of average fitness levels. Though I was absolutely wiped at the end of it. Wear hiking shoes for sure though, you’ll want something with good traction. And ideally water resistant/proof, there was a lot of running water over the trails.

Absolutely stunning views! You follow a river basically all the way up the trail. This trail offers it all from feeling like you are in an enchanted forest to rocky mountain areas and then what everyone comes here for a freaking lake nestled into a snow capped mountain!

Great Hike! We went on a Wednesday, so it wasn’t very busy. I definitely suggest waterproof shoes since there’s lots of water run offs across the trail or an extra pair of socks. The lake was well worth the hike, I suggest taking the loop around the lake, we found a nice spot to picnic & watch the fish jump.

life changing!!!

Crystal clear (but freezing!) lake at the top. A bit steep in parts but worth the effort. Many great places around the lake to wade in or have a picnic.

Really enjoyed this hike. The first half is quite easy, but it gets a bit more difficult closer to the lake with a lot of rocky terrain. The views get better as the hike gets more difficult though! We didn’t hike all the way around the lake, but enjoyed a good break there taking in the views. Clouds were low when we hiked, but it was still beautiful!

Great hike with nice view, no bugs

I did this hike last summer in June and it was amazing. I hiked this again yesterday (09/23/18) and it’s just as gorgeous as I remembered. This time it was awesome to see the orange and yellow leaves everywhere. Fall in the PNW is my favorite. We found it is the best route to take lower Elliot there and back. It follows the river and has a lot more to see. It isn’t as flat as upper Elliot but it’s worth it.

Bring water and waterproof shoes that help support ankles. Beautiful trail. Sharp rocks.

First off, the bear is still there, located in the area where the berries are most abundant, about 1 Mile from the top. He was so busy eating he wasn’t bothered by us at all, we saw him about 25’ off the trail, and one hiker was within 10’ of the bear because he wasn’t able to deter the bear so he went around it, he said the bear was more interested in eating berries and wasn’t at all aggressive and kept eating.

I gave it 4 stars because switchbacks suck, otherwise it made a great Fall hike once you got out from under the canopy of the trees, and away from those switchbacks. At the top it was socked in with clouds, it was windy and absolutely bone chilling. As we were headed back down it cleared up and the sun came out.

Love the lake and waterfalls. Trail is a stair-climber but very well maintained with no trail junctions (easy navigation).

Beautiful hike! You can hear streams and see waterfalls all throughout the hike. Get here early, the parking lot is full by 10:30 on the weekend. Lots of families and people hiking on the weekend but still did not feel crowded.

This is a challenging but wonderful hike. Our GPS Garmin watch listed it as about 10 mi round trip, so be prepared for more than 8.3 miles. There were tons of wild blueberries all along the top portion.

Road to North Lake trail is not too bad. Low clearance vehicles can do it, but have to go slow in a few spots. Trail from Independence Lake to North is steep, rocky, and lots of tree roots. Slower going than trail to Independence. Follow cairns around rock fall near the saddle at the top above North Lake.

We went on Sept 2nd for our honeymoon. The trail was great, rugged but definitely worth it!

Beautiful hike with impressive views to the valley on the way up. Almost all of the hike is under heavy growth, so very pleasant and fragrant. Drastically insufficient parking, though the picnic area across the highway has a fair amount more. The lake is more impressive than I think most people expect it to be. It’s small but in a dramatic setting. Nice access to the shore for swimming. Possibly among the most rugged trails around, resembling a stream bed more than a trail for long stretches, especially the third quarter of the hike up, or so. Quite fatiguing especially on the way down, where each step is fairly calculated. Not a place for solitude, but quite lovely.
