Definitely my favorite trail in the McCall area. The hike was tough but the views were totally worth it. Mid October was the perfect time to go as we got to experience all of the fall colors and got to see snow at the lake.

Hands down the best hot spring on public lands we have been. Made a short video of the hike if anyone is interested. https://practicalvagabonds.com/goldbug-hot-springs/

Amazing views. Friendly people on the trail.

Very little snow at the top, amazing lakes. This is one of my fav hikes I've ever done. Would make sure you bring waterproof hiking boots though since the trail was a little muddy and wet

This is one of my all time favorite hikes in Stanley! I highly recommend heading down to Alpine Lake on the way to Sawtooth. It's a must see! The hike had great views after the 2nd mile or so and they just kept getting better. If you go in July make sure to bring mosquito spray! They definately do get pretty gnarly especially around the water or in the evenings. Other than the kamikaze mosquitos, he hike is beautiful. Highly reccomend!

Relaxing trail, especially on Mondays. Few people with friendly dogs.

The views of the lake are beautiful and the trail was well marked, pretty inclined but worth it. Definitely a quick and short hike well worth the views. I would highly recommend continuing on and doing the Boulder Lake loop to really make the hike worth while if you have time.

So beautiful!!! End of September the leaves are all changing color and it was breath taking. Definitely a steep trek and there is loose dirt and gravel so be careful going down. We had the whole trail and lake all to ourselves. There’s a beach area at the lake to relax. The drive up to the trail head is a dirt road but not difficult to drive at all. Enough parking for about 6 cars. Would definitely recommend!

Super fun trail. It’s longer than 3.5 miles though. GPS said 2.6 to the top. All the same it’s worth every step. Hot springs at the top are excellent. We went on a Tuesday morning and there was only one other couple up top. Definitely worth the time.

great day hike!

Nice hike in the fall, with colors. Fairly steady uphill, with a good portion on dirt road shared by road vehicles. Trailhead was a little difficult to find, but it is marked by a sign about 40 yards to the right of a concrete bathroom being installed. Google maps got me to the right place, and All Trails was useful in locating the actual trailhead. My only regret was finding no mention in online descriptions of the road condition to reach the trailhead - fine for Jeeps, trucks, and sport utilities, but not so good for a low clearance road vehicle.

Awesome. Would definitely do again. The only downside is that it’s pretty busy. Go as early as you can or during the week when most people can’t go. It’s beautiful though and the hot springs are great! You have to go!

Awesome Great Beautiful easy to moderate. Can’t ask for a better day hike

Beautiful hot springs! The last stretch up to the springs is a bit tough, but worth it.

Awesome trail. Strenuous at the end but totally worth it! There weren’t a ton of people but they were all hangin meat.

This was our first hike in Idaho. While the trail can be done on a few hours, we opted to spend the entire day and took it slow. Definitely take the detour to Alpine Lake. Honestly, Sawtooth is bigger but Alpine was our solid favorite. We spent a good chunk of time here just enjoying the silence other than the sound of the water lapping the edge. We continued on up the switchbacks and hot another little lake (which we nicknamed decoy lake) and almost turned around did to a snow squall that moved in. But so glad we pushed on another few yards. Sawtooth Lake was gorgeous. We took the extra time to walk to the far side of the lake and followed the trail on through a boulder field for a spectacular view of some mountain lake in the distance. We stopped a few times for snacks, lunch, and just to experience the peace of the wilderness. We made our way back to Iron Creek trailhead for a total of 13+ miles and 8 hours exactly. As I said, it can be done in way less time, but we took deliberate time.

Pretty hike with good views pretty much the whole time! No bugs. Easy to get to.

pretty cool app!

Loved the hike. If your out of shape it will take you about 90 minutes. We make the first lake in 50. Nice views as well!

on Box Lake Trail

We set up base camp here for 3 nights and did day hikes in both directions on Crestline Trail - this is really a lovely lake with amazing white sand beach. It's really only about 2.5 miles to the south end of the lake where the beach is. There was a bit of uphill but I would rate this moderate to hard. The distance is pretty short and there are many places where the trail levels out after a good climb, so it's not too bad. The trail is in good shape to box lake - nothing scary or sketchy but a good effort. After Box Lake it gets a bit sketchy - lots of downed trees (look for the downed trees that have obviously been cut to mark the trail) - but nothing scary. Lots of nearby lakes within 7-10 miles for your day hikes - including a lovely view of McCall and Payette lake.

Whew! Tough hike in but the scenery more than makes up for it. The trail is very steep at the beginning and eventually plateaus in some areas. After laying eyes on the lake you are tasked with traversing a steep and rocky trail to the lake's shore. The challenge of this hike is well worth it!

My favorite trail I have done in Idaho. The only thing this trail is missing is a waterfall!

The walk to the base of the falls is a pretty easy trek, but a couple of things to note to make the most of it: There's not much of a view from the bottom, and it's worth the scramble up the left side to get to the actual falls.. The beginning of the climb is through the forest and there's some handholds on various trees and branches, but the end is a scramble up some slippery scree. Not a very long climb but I feel this is worth mentioning because it really isn't appropriate for "all skill levels" at that point and IMO worth it to actually see the falls (pictured). Also there's 2 creek crossings, the 1st has a couple single logs to balance on to get across but the 2nd crossing doesn't have any logs. I did it late season so i was able to find some shallow spots to cross, but if it were earlier season, plan to take your shoes off or get wet. Lovely hike!

This is one of my favorite hikes. This was the third time I have done this hike and each time I love it more! The hike is almost exactly 10 miles out and back if you take the detour to visit Alpine Lake. We stopped there on the way up and then hiked around Sawtooth Lake a bit once arrived. It is a stunning beauty and well worth the miles you put in. The entirety of the trail is beautiful. The water crossing a couple miles in is low this time of year and easy to cross. No snow up at the lake either which was a first for me!

trail running

Awesome running trail, walked during some of the switch backs and sat in the creek on the way back! July weather was perfect for an afternoon run. Took a little less than 2 hours round trip. :)

I was thoroughly surprised by this hike. Pretty easy route overall, but the last segment can be a bit of a gut check due to the steep climb to the springs. Most of the hike is high desert, but ends in a beautiful, forested area. The springs are fantastic with warm and cold sections to bathe in, and very photogenic waterfalls. Swim suits are definitely optional here. Worth checking out if you’re in the area.
