This is an excellent hike ranging between moderate to hard depending in personal stamina. We did the complete 9.8 mile starting from North ridge, whittmore gulch, purisima Creek, Craig britton, Harkins ridge and back again North ridge.
elevation gain is good towards the last 2 miles. start early as it takes around 5-6 hours to complete

Beautiful and eerie pre-dawn October run up Montara Mountain. After heading out from the TH, I dropped down a bit and took the old road around a half mile in. About 2 miles in to the climb the trail gets a bit steep, but is non-technical and easy to follow even in the dark. I continued to climb up through and above the marine layer, feeling like I was in the Lost Boys. After about 4 miles, I reached the North Peak and took the fast decent back down.

Challenging but fun, great views.

Great workout with beautiful views

great hike! it took us just under 6 hours to finish. we got there at 7 in the morning and finished just right before 1. it was tiring but the view is beautiful for when you want to rest! bring plenty of water and enjoy.

My favorite backyard hiking area! Easily end up with 15-20 miles. Coastal scenery is top notch, especially sunrise/sunset hikes. Lots of challenging hills to choose from. Great day hike

Amazing time. Saw the Marin headlands. It’s amazing

Go COUNTER CLOCKWISE! Did the Loop clockwise. Started at 9:15am. First 2/3 of the trail was shaded and scenic. Last 1/3 was steep and full of flies. Definitely a moderate/hard gorgeous hike.

Beautiful coastal hike. Two ups and downs - the downs a bit tricky with small loose rocks

Awesome trail for a Sunday. Incredible views at the top. Remember to wear/ bring sunscreen though, I got super burned.

Quite an easy trail area with plenty of beautiful scenery and shaded parts for cooling down. Due to its proximity to the Pacific, the peaks can be very windy but refreshing so hold on to your hats when you reach any open high altitude areas. Some parts of the area allow pets, however this one DOES NOT ALLOW PETS.

Long hike that goes along the coast. Gets crowded by noon. Was foggy the entire time I hiked, so no views, but I could see how it would be gorgeous on a clear day.

Got right up on the North Ridge- way above the fog

We started from the North Ridge trail parking lot. It’s a really great hike with stunning views on the ocean, followed by being surrounded by the redwood trees. Then a rather easy walk along the creek, followed by a steep climb. It’s a proper workout in the end, but a very satisfying hike!

My favorite trail in the peninsula. Great climb and fantastic 360 views from the top.

Just make sure it’s clear out on the coast — very easy for the top of the mountain to be in the clouds.

Beautiful ocean view along the way - gets better with elevation.
Trail is not hard. I think it is moderate. Lots of shade. Watch out for poison oak.

Not too crowded for mid-day Sunday. Great hike if you want something quick with great views and a good mix of up hill/down hill. Seems like it’d be great for trail running too.

Beautiful 2hr loop.

Awesome little lighthouse and views. Enjoyed this but enjoyed it even more from the water looking up!

Nice variety, lots of scenic vistas. There are lots of parking lots along the trail, so there are constantly a lot of people doing shorter hikes and carrying things to the beach. At times it was one step away from waiting in line to pass the steep parts. A lot of the hikers were unprepared for steep sandy slopes so dealing with people half-falling down the downhills was also a negative for me.

Good route. I've done other hikes from Grey Whale Cove this was the first deserving of the hard rating. The combination of the two steep sections and that you tackle the entire 2k incline in the first part of the hike keeps you on your toes.

I chose to hike up to the peak and then run down, with a few exceptions where it was too steep to run and stay in control.

Great hike with gorgeous views of the peninsula. From the top, you'll be able to see Mount Diablo and Mount Tamalpais off in the distance. There are two really steep sections of the trail. Namely, the section right at the beginning near the parking lot area and the last section of the Fly Amanita trail (the narrow one with a bunch of switchbacks that goes through a forested section) before you meet up with Old San Pedro Mountain Road. It wasn't easy getting down the latter (which was at least a 50-degree slope)—we had to slide down the dirt right at the junction.

Great hike, not too many views since the fog was covering the majority of the trail. Make sure to go on a clear day.

I would rate this moderate. Most of the route is well covered by trees and did not feel the heat at all. Beautiful views. Go early to get parking

One of the best kept secrets of the Bay Area

this is pretty similar to Mission Peak but with way better views and less people. definitely go before noon because it'll get hot. at a moderate pace finished in about 2 hours.

There are so many trails; even though we follow the direction, we still got lost 3 times and had to trek back. At one point the trail showed on the map/GPS doesn’t exist. Wasn’t sure I was going to make it through; but I did, yay! We got some sun, fog, and rain, too during our hike. Was a great hike though - loved it.

I feel like this trail was pretty moderate. If you aren’t use to hiking up pretty steep inclines, this hike may not be for you. Make sure you don’t miss the Wolf Ridge trail head. Heading up near Hill 88 had me distracted and I never saw it. If you hit the graffiti then head back down the hill and look to your right for the trail head.
