HikingGreat!

Fun trail! You can cut this trail a little short if you'd like to by parking at the second entrance a little higher up the hill, perfect if you're short on time. Trail heads are easily accessible, no need for 4WD. With the recent snow melt it was possible to hike with only spikes, no need for snowshoes or skis. Great view of the city from the top of the mountain!

If you don’t have snow shoes, this isn’t the trail for you in the winter.

it’s pretty narrow, the first mile the snow wasn’t packed down but after that it was great,

A bit slick due to mud and melting snow, but an easy ascent to the top and not too crowded. Nice view at the summit of Bozeman below.

HikingIcyMuddySnow

With melting snow and being well-traveled it was slippery and very muddy but still doable. Most of the trail was slush or ice but melting in the sun. We were glad we did the switchbacks side of the loop up to the summit because the straight route was very slippery. The straighter side would’ve been very hard to climb given the ice. Otherwise easy trail. There is a trail map at the parking lot that shows the distance for each segment. A mile through the ranch fields and some time on the outskirts of the woods near a road before doing the loop in the woods. The view looks down on the city and there were other hikers passing us regularly.

Mountain bikingMuddy

I am a bike rider and I remind other riders to YIELD to pedestrians. Stop and pull off to the side of the trail. Also, use a reasonable and prudent speed. Good sight line and no pets = let 'er rip, otherwise always expect that you will meet someone on a blind curve. This is a shared trail and NOT a bike park. Also, GVLT did a lot of work fixing the trails this summer. When the trails are muddy and soft choose another venue. On 10/18/20 there were true gumbo sections with really sticky mud. Nuf said.
