Mom and me Map

Beautiful and pretty easy. Not much up and down. Even prettier if you continue past the falls to where the creek meets the river.

We completed this hike today. Perfect weather. I think we only encounter 5 or 6 people on the whole trail. We hung out for sunset on Cloudsplitter. Very windy up there, but well worth the view. Dark as all get out going down. Headlamps are a must. The trail was very well marked despite all the leaves on ththe ground. Muddy though.

This was the most poorly maintained and marked trail I've probably ever been on. I hiked it with two others, we had a map, I hike a lot, and we got lost a ton. Maybe it would be easier to stay on the trail in the summer and spring when leaves aren't covering the ground. It was well-marked in some places, but in other places, we could not find the triangle blazes to save our life. If I had attempted the trail on my own, I would have had to turn back after a few miles due to not knowing where to go. There were TONS of huge trees down blocking the trail, which required hiking off-trail through thick brambles and other brush. It didn't seem like the trail had been maintained in years, in my opinion. They also lock the gate to the trailhead parking area at 4:30, so make sure you start early. It took our group 6 hours and 42 minutes and we were hiking fairly fast...It probably would have taken 6 hours if we hadn't gotten lost and felt like we were hiking "off-trail" for a majority of the trail. It was definitely a good work-out and challenge though. The trail should be rated "difficult" on AllTrails, not moderate, and it's 13.75 miles in length. We took the trail counter-clockwise.

It was a stunning trail, but I'll never hike it again. Also, if you're not use to hiking, this trail is not for you.

It was definitely difficult this time of year. Most of the hike was muddy and slick with all the fallen leaves, but the views of red river were amazing!! My second time doing this trail and will definitely do it again.

my favorite trail. I love cloud splitter. it is all up hill and hard to climb through the rock but awesome hike

Great for a day hike.

This trail was not easy at all. It’s straight uphill. Didn’t see anywhere that said you had to do the very hard trail to get to the easy trail. They have the trails detoured because of construction. You have to cross a creek to even get to the trail. It was a pretty hike but a heads up would’ve been nice.

Loved it! It is a very beautiful place!

Was a fairly difficult hike with a 40lb pack on my back but was beautiful and worth spending the night. October 2018

Beautiful trail! A good amount of uphill to the overlook, but nothing a moderately in shape adult couldn't do. Trails were nice, and we didn't see anyone else. Just the friendly dog that guided us on our hike! The overlook is amazing, and well worth seeing. The fall colors were beautiful, and I'll definitely go back.

Beautiful in the early spring. Note there are multiple starting points for this trail. The longest is around 10 miles

Good trail but the markings could be a lot better!! If doing the trail counter clockwise your left hand turn is about 50 yards from the trail head!!!

Beautiful falls, easy hiking, trail with heavy foliage. Quite and tranquil. We didn’t see anyone on the trail, it’s well marked with the white markers with in about 50 feet’s of each other. The little wooden bridge is a cute touch, Cumberland isn’t to far but not accessible from this trail, we ended up driving to that location since we were able to hike there. But the trail is beautiful one I would recommend to an avid hiker or beginners.

very beautiful Trail Falls is awesome at the end Trail is a little rough. as we went down last time we seen some Bear Prints in the mud on the trail.

I loved this trail!! Did it as a backpacking trail!!

My favorite trail to date. I got to see the sunrise as I began my hike, wild ponies everywhere, and bagged the Virginia high point! Took me 5 hours with lots of picture breaks. Just a heads up, this trail is inside a park so you have to pay an entrance fee, which isn't mentioned on the blurb above. $5 in state, $7 out of state.

Good trail... lots of litter though :-/

See Chris Seanard’s review. Would recommend close toed shoes for this trail.

Great trail! The right onto the unmarked Indian staircase ascent is easy to miss. We noted a thin cord tied to a frail, dried out root that appeared to be placed to assist descent and ascent from the frog head feature. Use of this cord may confirm an application for a Darwin Award. Also, the cloud splitter trail is sketchy but easy to locate with the help of AllTrails. Exercise extreme caution in less than perfect conditions. I was appalled by the traverse rope (it’s broken anyway) and the 2 cords for the crack ascent. There is no way they are rated for body weight and completely inappropriate. This climb could really use some static line. We chose not to summit cloud splitter due to unsafe weather/ rock conditions and lack of appropriate gear. Otherwise, the features were super cool to explore and the view was gorgeous. It would be even better if the NPS accepted the heavy traffic of this trail and installed via ferrata hardware and warning signs if there are liability concerns.

I would agree that this trail is hard...hard to stay interested in. It’s an ok walk through the woods, but not very interesting compared to other trails in the area. We lost interest after about 2.5 miles and found another trail with more interesting features.
There was cool lunch spot near the river at about 2.5 miles.

Beautiful hike. There is some high Cliffs and it is a pretty steep drop when you get to the top of the falls. There are a lot of kids on the trails and I brought mine but there were a few instances it made me a little nervous with them.

My girls and I loved it. Definitely a must see..

Hiked with a friend a few weeks ago with the intention of camping on the trail. It's a beautiful hike. Pretty good workout with an overnight pack on your back. Definitely not for beginners. Crossed paths with a bear about 5 miles in. It ran away from us and we kept on hiking. Stopped to eat a few miles later and coincidentally came across bear prints in the exact location. At that point I decided to head back to my vehicle. Again, the bear was not aggressive or even curious. I'm just a very nervous person when it comes to bears. We actually heard it run away from us again when we passed back through.

Amazing hike! Views are Spectacular! And you get to go to the highest point in VA (Mt Rogers). Saw plently of wild ponies which makes this one of the best hikes in VA IMO, just be sure to not try and pet them. Tons of camp spots along with a shelter is located on the AT portion of this trail so this would be a perfect place for an overnight. Definitely a must do hike in VA!

We did this trail last fall. Four 60 year olds. It was not to difficult for our of shape old people. The fall views were awesome!

There are two trail heads, we started at the furthest point out on the gravel road 198. This is about 4 miles one way. There was recent heavy rain so conditions were wet. The trail is not currently well maintained, as there were several fallen trees and the last section before the second trail head is grown over. However, it was all passable and an interesting hike. The falls was awesome with the rain. I would consider moderate due in part to distance and condition.

Closed on Sunday, didn’t get to hike it

Beautiful hike. Amazing views the whole way up starting from Grayson Highlands State Park. The path is very rocky. It would be very easy to trip or twist an ankle if one, was not paying attention. Back county camping was not permitted during the time we were there ( BEARS ), but I would definitely go back to camp. Plenty of well kept sites with beautiful views of the valley below.

Incredible and Rejuvenating AMAZING!!!!! I will be back over and over❤️❤️❤️
