HikingGreat!

This trail is CRAZY tough! I hike difficult trails all the time, but this one is VERY steep for over a mile (without letting up). And then the downhill is also rough because of all of the small, loose rocks covered by dead leaves. All that being said, it was still a GREAT hike. Just what we needed - but be prepared for the difficulty!

Please for your own safety DO NOT use Apple Maps to find this trail. It will take you down copper way which is down a private one way drive down to a deliverance type experience. This is not a joke.

I gave it a 3 because I was not able to hike it. We got within 2 miles of the trailhead, on a road with many dangerous big rocks that had fallen onto it, and had to turn around. For some reason on a sunny Sunday morning at 9:30, there were at least 3 pickup trucks blocking the road doing something that looked like drilling with large machinery. It was obvious our way was blocked, and for the life of me I can’t figure out why the forest service? could not have anticipated hikers arriving on a perfect weekend day and put a SIGN at the entrance to Round Knob Rd indicating the road was closed??!! Very annoying but luckily we had time to go somewhere else. Thank goodness we didn’t damage the car.

Glad we did it, but the steepest trail I have ever done. View at top is beautiful but hard to come down!

The hike up is STEEP. I mean like. Really. Really. Steep. Prepare for an hour and a half of straight uphill. That being said, the view from the top is surreal. Sitting on the rocks, there is almost a 180° view of the surrounding mountains. It’s absolutely breathtaking. It is by far one of the best landscapes I’ve ever seen. Although the trail up is steep (and I cannot stress that enough), it is well worth it.

Nice workout, the places that are steep, well, it's surely steep. This trail is mostly all up hill, there are some flats, but not much. It has water running off the trail in several places, have waterproof boots, couple places it was very slick. There was 3 places for very cool views, my favorite was the middle place. You hike it, you'll figure out the 2nd one. This trail is fairly rated at difficult, come early as there are some other deviations to add to your mileage. Enjoy!

HikingGreat!

Uphill most of the way but totally doable. Not a technical climb and I’m sure gets the hard rating due to the uphill nature of the hike. We loved it, trail doesn’t have trail heads but is very easy to navigate. The view at the top is magnificent !!! Great hike!

I would agree with the assessment that, while it is a steep & strenuous hike, it’s not technically challenging. The view is fantastic, & the workout is way more enjoyable than what you could ever get at some dumb fitness center. The water at the halfway point is delicious and cold.

Hella steep! Highly suggest using poles! Worth the view at the top- but definitely the hardest 1.5 straight up I’ve done. Also loved it

HikingGreat!Muddy

The trail starts off with some warnings about previous failed endeavors and a suggestion for 6-8 hours duration for hiking to high rock and back. The hike begins with a slow ascent that turns into a moderately aggressive incline after about 3/4 of a mile. The steeper incline continues off and on to the lookout point where you can see much of the Whitesburg area Valley from Mars Rock. There are some areas on the trail where you turn onto the loop which are not quite as steep and easier to hike. The maps and alltrails also indicate the name High Rock for this area. There aren’t a lot of signs indicating The level of danger, but when you approach the lookout just be aware there is a cliff with a proximately 60 foot fall on the other side. Using my Apple Watch GPS the round trip was approximately 7.29 miles, for some reason my all trails recording stopped towards the end. My watch also indicated my moving time was 2 hours and 52 minutes, much shorter than I suggested duration but I moved pretty quickly. The sign at the trailhead says 7.5 miles. This is a little longer than than the Alltrails estimation, but shorter than other hikers reported experience. Overall I would say the hike is moderate for people who are in good shape. If you have trouble with longer uphill hikes this will be more difficult and some of the sections are covered with water at this point in the year (March) so be prepared for that.

Almost 5 stars. Did this with 4 and 7 year old daughters. If we can handle those super steep sections you can too! Great views. Hard to find trailhead right by a spring across a small turnaround area.

BackpackingBlowdownGreat!

I had the entire trail to myself which was great. It is a nice hike through the woods to the waterfall. There are 4 big creek crossings you have to walk through. The last little bit of the hike is where you gain the elevation but overall and Easy to moderate hike. The waterfall is absolutely beautiful and feels like a real find because of its remoteness. i followed the Alltrails map with ease, even though its not marked except at the start of the trail.

HikingGreat!

I'm going to provide a bit of a dissenting opinion here: I didn't find this trail as difficult as some of the other reviewers. My family, including two boys ages 10 and 12, found the trail to be quite manageable and more moderate than difficult. Yes, there is a very steep section of the trail towards the end, but this section is only about 0.3 miles in length. So I wouldn't let the trail's elevation gain and truly steep section deter you from doing the hike; it's really not a soul-crushing and never ending climb. More importantly, during and after this ascent, the hiker is rewarded with some truly spectacular views from multiple rocky outcroppings, the best of which is at the trail's end. Because of the short length of the trail, we extended the hike by continuing along the Stone Mountain Trail for about a mile to the area where Rich Top is located on the map. While there is no similar rocky overlook at Rich Top, after the climb up to Buzzard Roost, the walk to the Rich Top area is fairly level and easy. For those seeking to add a bit more mileage to their hike, I'd recommend this section, which is a very pleasant walk through the woods. And after the hike just beyond the parking area, the Pigeon River area provides a nice spot to rest and relax along the river. One of the odd charms of this trail is that even though there are absolutely no signs, the trail is easy to follow and seems very well maintained. Refreshingly unpopulated and highly recommended for those seeking a good workout and breathtaking views.
