Nice moderate uphill hike, quite craggy. The final ¼ mile up to the peak is just as the signs indicate, narrow and steep, but not overly so. I'm a flip flop hiker and had no issues ascending or descending. Great shade spot on the peak for a quick break if extending this trail to Lost Dog Wash (nice easygoing extension). Also, keep an eye out for the larger lizards just a little before the first landing. Overall a nice hike.

I do like this hike but would rather do echo.

Awesome hike. Well marked unless you're myself on the way down. Definitely for more experienced hikers or more driven people in general. Beautiful views of wildlife and the city.

Great trail. Good mix of moderately steep and flat. Great views as with most South Mountain trails.

It is actually beautiful. I went this am, late start. Turned around after a bit. On trail 45 min. Came back to my car & rear window smashed. Items stolen from car. Police said several cars were hit. At sunrise & another trailhead.

Really too bad

Beautiful canyon on the way in and really nice views from the top. I saw 5 other hikers on my hike that started at 5 PM on Friday afternoon. 75% of the way was shaded and a nice breeze was blowing which brought the temp down 10 degrees or so from 108 when I started out. The 1000' foot climb up is a lot easier than comparable hikes around the valley.

Great hike through the desert. Relatively close to the East valley. Well maintained and we'll traveled. Great views at the top.

A wonderful, moderately difficult, non-technical hike so close to Scottsdale! We started at 5am and caught the sunrise on our way up - the views from the top are incredible. Highly recommended.

This hike is super well marked and highly trafficked. I tried getting to the top twice but the part where you essentially have to rock-climb freaked me out a little so I turned around. If you have anxiety / fear of heights the ascent to the top may not be your jam - but you can always turn around before that (there’s a helicopter landing area which makes a nice turnaround) while still getting the amazing views.

Love this trail and it''s not as traffic as other trails I go to.

Like this Trail, best to get an early start this time of year. A lot of the Trail is vertical inclines. Good workout!

Nice hike, easy and quiet.

Fun trail occasionally hard to find. Some great views of red Mountain and the salt River. There are many other trails and washes that intersect. This makes it easy to take a quick short cut back to the beginning. We cut about 2 miles off the main trail by doing this. We didn’t want to do the whole 7 miles. We did about five.

Nice terrain and inclines. Amazing views, worth it for sunrise. Got there at 4:55 on a Saturday to 1 other cars. Full parking lot by the time we left

Park for free by the bridge just before Granite Reef recreation site or roadside just after. Granite Reef requires a paid pass.

This is a great MTB trail. I was hiking and went off trail most of the time. I did a Little Rock hounding and found some nice quartz.

It’s straight up desert crossing, not featured, maintained hiking trails. I like that.

Quiet and relaxing.

Decent views - started at 0615 finished at about 0855 as we stopped for lunch - I hike a lot in Arizona in the summer but the last mile was oppressively hot. At 108 my backpack thermometer read 120 in direct sun. I’d recommend not doing this one during July/Aug unless the high is below 105

It was fun we had a group ranging from ages 41-9 years old. It was difficult to go up but easy to come down. We went off a little to the Hidden Valley tunnel then walked back down. Overall a fun hike, would say that it’s about moderately difficult

great hike, go early and bring water

Scenic trail with a good combination of uphill and downhill sections throughout. Not well marked in a couple places and it would be easy to end up on another spur. Enjoyable otherwise!

Great trail. Great challenge.

I think the only parking area is about a mile away from the trail. You have to get a permit at the Walgreens on the way in ($8). I skipped this trail.

I really love this trail. Echo canyon is even more fun on the other side of Camelback Mountain.

Great views and a lot of bouldering! This made for some good exercise and a great father-daughter outing on Father’s Day. The trail is really well marked, even in places where a marker couldn’t be placed there was blue paint or reflectors directing you.

The reason I did not like this trail was because there were so many people (even in the heat of summer on a holiday, people who are native to Scottsdale use the trails for exercise). Yes, they’re respectful of the trail and are friendly, but I prefer trails with less activity. My personal opinion.

If you choose to do this trail in April-October go in the early morning or late evening. Be sure that you have great close-toed hiking shoes; going uphill is easy, but going downhill made me cringe. Steep ascent/descent. Also, be careful of bees near the top. If you’re allergic, I don’t suggest hiking all the way to the top. I got stung for the first time in my life and there were dozens of them. Finally, be sure to bring more water than you think you’ll need. We arrived as a bunch of ambulances and firetrucks did because a person had to be carried off of the mountain; he had heatstroke.

Great sunsets. Great happy hour!

Fantastic loops! Make your own distance by adding loops or subtracting...... good elevation not too much, good for trail running and bikes! This is a great easy go to trail system!
