While there might be hordes of people on this trail during the weekend, it is still gorgeous and fun. Tourist confusion on where to go after the entrance can also be entertaining. To the right of the parking lot is a human size hole in the fence that leads down a gravel road which is a more direct path than what is shown on the map. Or you can zig zag through the bamboo and jump a fence or two.

The plus side of the heavy traffic is the large amount of garbage to collect along the trail, very rewarding.

The view at the end is Amazing! Having said that, it is not an “easy” hike. So.many. Stairs at the end, but if you can push through, you’ll be happy you did. I think this would be a rough for kids. Slippery in parts and the steps are large (think standing lunge to get up). Took about 2 hours to get up and 1.5 coming down. Bring water and snacks for the top.

We were here today with our 4 and 6 year old Girls and it was hard. For hiking the trail with kids i‘d like to recommend the age of the kids with 6 or older. The waterfall was much fun.

Awesome views! It took me 2.5 hours to finish the hike but I stopped to take pictures along the way. Make sure if you bring your dog they don’t slip down the edge. Most of the time there’s a steep cliff on one of your sides. I parked at the bottom of the gate and walked up to the starting point then when I finished I had a shorter walk down to my car.

Was hard to get to, especially since there is some recent construction going on and they put up a few fences, but was an overall fun hike and the waterfall was worth it. Wasn’t very difficult, but you do have to cross the stream a few times.

Very easy and fast hike... there was no parking near it though, all the old parking is now blocked off

The hike up gets your heart pumping, and the view at the top is so worth it! It’s a pretty straightforward hike, and mostly shaded. Also, not crowded!

We started on Kamahele and hiked through, then looped back to our starting point via residential streets. Great hike!

Went today and it was beautiful! Lots of roots and rocks, on the harder side of moderate. Not much to look at along the hike but the waterfall is nice and cold. Saw many kids doing the hike. Don’t let the easy beginning fool you.

Best panoramic views I’ve seen on Oahu. My knees took a beating but it was a really fun trail with a few exciting rope scrambling spots, beautiful ridge views and sweeping island views.

Moderate hike with a pretty nice waterfall. Be ready to scramble a little bit and hike over roots.

Did this hike in the afternoon on a cool March day. When you start, a local homeowner told us to hug the fence to the left. There is a trail over there but it was super overgrown and multiple branches of the trail. Once you get up to the ridge it is much clearer. The bulk of the hike was out in the sun and would be HOT in the summer. The end of the hike was awesome
And nothing beats that view. There were some folks up there camping as there is some flat areas near the top.

I will totally bring my kids back to Don’t another time (my kids are ages 11 - 3).

it was a lot of fun cliff jumping.

Definitely a moderate hike with lots of roots and rocks. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot to look at compared to many other hikes on the island. The waterfall at the end is interesting, but way too crowded to enjoy.

Awesome hike! Be prepared to sweat. It’s clear and footing isn’t hard, but the elevation is legit.

Breathtaking view at the pillboxes. Very steep and slick and I was really scared, but it was totally worth it.

Very nice hike. Forest is magical, view from the top is worth climbing those steep stairs.

Was a great hike! But we did it in a rainy day, the way up was very muddy and slippery! I will come back for sure but sunny day :)

It was really muddy & full of mosquitoes. Don't worry about getting dirty, muddy, or wet. Have fun!

The boar is gone now.
The hike was beautiful and absolutely would recommend. We have done it a few times now and love it every time. Be ready to climb some waterfalls and wear good shoes for slippery rocks.

Starts off steep and muddy but doesn’t stay that way for long. It becomes easy as you hike along the ridgeline of these grassy trails, with amazing views of the East shoreline and acres of blowing tall grass. There are 2 pillboxes, both easy to climb on top of.

THIS IS NOT THE PINK PILLBOX HIKE. Maybe no one else had trouble with this but when we searched “pink pillbox” into google maps with limited internet connectivity, they gave us this one. We spent quite a while searching for the third pink pillbox, not realizing until a day later that the pink pillbox hike is on the west side. Oops.

Second tip: don’t follow google maps’ suggestion of hiking a loop instead of heading to the highest peak and back. If you follow the trail all the way into the neighborhood, like we did, you’ll be met with a high private property gate and no way to get back unless you re-hike the mountain or call an Uber.

Cute little hike. Not strenuous at all despite being muddy and slippery as hell (definitely one of those hikes where it takes longer to get down than up). Pretty views of the North Shore from the top of the pillbox and I recommend exploring inside.

Great medium-difficulty ridgeline trail for hikers new to ridgelines. Well maintained and not as dangerous or slippery as many others. Starts off a little muddy on an ATV track (you might see boar hunters) and soon leads to a path along the ridge, with great views the whole way. Easy going until the last half mile when you gain the most elevation, using stairs and rope to scamper straight up. When you get to the radio tower, this isn’t the top!! There’s still about 5 minutes until you reach the true peak (with a bench - thank you to whoever set that up)

Took us a few hours, I recommend heading out before the sun is high and bringing water. Snacks not necessary if you eat a big breakfast. It was cloudy when we went but still got amazing views, became 100% foggy at the highest peak but got lots of good photos/looks before that.

Fairly easy trail that didn’t take more than 2 hours, got lost a few times but easily found our way back to the trail.

Not much of a historic site hike and views of Pearl Harbor along this trail are undesirable. Homeless camps and several areas with heavy tribe smell. May be better bike than hike trail. I would NOT recommend going alone

Great hike! Great views

This trail is well groomed and straightforward. There are alternative trails that cut between the switchbacks that were a little distracting. The viewpoint at the top of the ridge makes this trail so worth it! I would say this a hard beginner hike or easy intermediate hike. It’s also the easiest of the Hawaii ridge hikes. I wore hiking boots, but trail runners and even tennis shoes will do the job. The trail was pretty dry making it pretty ideal for stepping. The stairs are a tad steep near the step so watch the footing when coming down from the mountain. It took us just over 2 hours to go up
and come down.

trail is in good shape, the stairs make it a workout but the view is worth it

Amazing hike and beautiful waterfall at the end. Super muddy but so much fun! I decided to wear water shoes...and it was a great idea! Definitely a long hike...so be prepared! We had plenty of snacks and lots of water! I would definitely do this hike again!

Quick, easy (but steep) hike with great views the entire time. Wear sunscreen, bring water, and be prepared to share the trail with lots of new friends.

I know a few people have mentioned this isn't a good hike for kids, but I disagree. If your kiddos are used to hiking, they'll be completely fine. If a tourist can make it up in jeans and platform flip flops, your determined five year old can, too.
