I hike this trail often. There can be a lot of people near the main parking/lodge/river area but otherwise it is great.

Great trail, has alot of steps but the view is well worth it. Highly recommend the short detour to the Supeior beach.

Great trail, I have been there in the winter and summer. In the winter the waterfall is frozen and looks beutiful. It looks amazing in the summertime to and you can go swimming in the waterfall.

Hiked this in the winter. The falls were mostly frozen. It was a beautiful scene. We hiked without ice cleats, but they certainly would have been helpful to have.

Beautiful easy stroll along picturesque coastline. There are ups and downs but lots it easy well maintained steps and trail very easy to follow. Bring your camera!

Rocky but lovely. We’re were there late September when overcast and tail still fairly muddy but doable. Fantastic views as others have noted. A few spots where signage could have been clearer. Would definitely do it again! Rocky footing with some ups and downs.

Hiked just after the fresh snowfall and it was absolutely beautiful. You feel like you’re in a winter wonderland. Highly recommend the trail in all seasons.

Did this trail on 10.27.18 in the later afternoon. Trails were muddy and slippery, but a lovely hike it was! Wonderful variety of terrain, including some stairs and various uphill/downhill climbs. If you’re not a hiker, this may not be the trail for you; trekking poles recommended. If you’re a hiker, this trail is more long than it is challenging. We finished in about 2.5 hours. We are of average health, frequent hikers, and are in our late 20’s-early 30’s.

This is a quick and easy hike with plenty of photo opportunities! The suspension bridge is very cool!

Great trail for Minnesota! Came here around golden hour after hitting Palisade Head. The trail alternated from boardwalk to rock bed strewn with gravel. There were several nice vantage points and the end of the trail was idyllic. Definitely an easy trail, but easy to take a while here enjoying the views.

We hiked a bit over a mile past the falls on the SHT. lots of fallen trees over the trail this time of year. many looked pretty fresh. great hike along the river. there was so much water for this time of year that it was hard to see the 'kettle'

Just did this as a short trip last weekend, one day in / one day out. We camped at one of the two sites at Bear Lake and had the place all to ourselves. Highly recommend weeknight camping- we passed many parties heading out as we were hiking in Sunday night. It’s as muddy as everyone says, but worth it. The fall colors are stunning and the overlooks along the way surprised me. I wouldn’t camp any later than mid-October... it was real chilly when we weren’t moving and snow covered the ground when we woke up. Definitely a MN gem.

I loved this hike. I was my first hike on the Northshore. I felt like this was rugged yet not hard. My dog did well. The views of this trail are amazing.

Great views...beautiful fall colors and easy terrain.

Went hiking here in September, trail starts along the split rock river and takes you up the left (west) side the whole way until you cross. Bridge was still out but the river narrowed enough for us to cross with ease. Once you cross you’ll hike for a bit and then come up on a ridge with views of Superior.. definitely a good ending to the hike!!

Never been on the trail before but really enjoyed the hike. The trail is in a little disarray with several planks requiring maintenance. Also, this trail is no longer a loop as the bridge to cross the river has been removed so now the hike is out and back. I still think this is a worthwhile hike but I am disappointed it is no longer a loop (for now anyway).

Truly beautiful hiking area. There are some areas that are busy with people and some that are more quiet. Be a responsible pet parent and only bring your dog if they are good around lots people and other dogs. Bring your own water, no fountains.

Great hike and the views make the uphill worth it! Trekking poles are a necessity.

Great trail. It was easy to find and well marked. Beautiful views!

Short and sweet.

Easy to access, but crowded trail. Dog-friendly. Requires some careful footing at times, but overall a fairly easy hike for most people. River is forceful, rugged, and impressive. Several great viewpoints. Worth a quick hike, even if you skip the wooded portion of the loop in favor of just seeing the river.

Lovely! Easy enough for a 2 and 4 year old.

The hike to middle falls was tougher than expected. Only made it to the first lookout. But that view of lake superior made the hike worth it!

Amazing hike that takes between an hour and an hour and a half depending how many pictures you take of the beautiful overlooks. Only about 2 miles off highway 61. Well worth your time!!!

Hiked this in the drizzling rain, so couldn’t get as close to the sides, as I normally would have, but this river/falls are Spectacular. Slot canyons, reminiscent of Utah, in Minnesota. Loved this easy hike.

Waterfall is pretty and hike is pretty easy.

Great hike! Some narrow spots in the trail you will get wet from dew on the trees. Harder than we expected, but overall great hike and great views!

This section of the SHT features great overlooks inland to Bean and Bear lakes. It’s a lovely stretch of the trail that makes a nice day hike or short overnight backpack. The trail is pretty rugged with lots of up and down, but the views are worth the effort. If you decide to camp at Bear Lake be advised that summer weekends it fills up quickly and there are only two spots on the lake that have decent space for a tent. A few hammock spots. There are a couple of flat spots up on the hill past the latrine as well. But if you get there early enough it’s a great place to camp. You won’t necessarily have solitude, but a post hike swim in this lovely lake is pretty glorious.
