Maybe Map

Did this as a day hike in windy conditions. The trail is mostly in good shape, only as it passes by Mt Wilson does it get a bit more ambiguous to follow, then completely peters out as the low desert comes into view. The scenery itself is reason enough to hike this trail, and by itself it is enjoyable as well.
Access to the trailhead is via a dirt/sand road barely the width of a pickup truck. Badly rutted, with a few minor boulder crossings. Tried both parts of the road, from Montezuma Valley road S-22 near the switchbacks leading down to Borrego Springs to the trailhead, and then out to S-22 via the other leg, for the final mile crossing over to Old Wilson Road which is in much better shape. I recommend only using the first leg, it is manageable for high clearance vehicles whereas towards Old WIlson Rd there are long ruts about 18" deep which are difficult to avoid. Also note the trailhead can only accommodate 2 vehicles for parking, however 1/4 mile West is a cluster of campsites with more room to park.

Pretty nice hike, the elevation switches up a lot and once I got past the all the way up junction there wasn't that many people out there. It was a really beautiful out there, blue skies and lots of sage.

Good got kids. Both my 3/6 year olds can make the loop from lake

Pretty moderate hike with amazing views!

Fun uphill hike!

I loved the trails. The main trail leads to a lake. Took my dogs off leash for a little while and they loved it. Lots of up hill at first. I would come back here its a good workout.

Pretty steep incline and the terrain is very rocky which makes the hike more difficult since you have to be careful where you step. Lots of routes and confusing we had to use the app to make sure we went the right way after making a wrong turn.

More residential than hike. And a ton of people. “Hiked” on asphalt and sidewalks. The view from the top is good but there were so many people that the peaceful easy feeling was just not there.

Great hike for dogs. Lots of elevation gained in the first mile with nice shade. At the top the trail widens and there are tons of options for where to head next. Really enjoyed, will be back.

loved it. great hike. bring water

Awesome trail! Lots of other trails branch off the main trail so there are plenty of options for adding additional miles

Great hike the views at the top are rewarding

This place is AWESOME, especially if you have a dog!! So the trail itself, is pretty well maintained. I would recommend using the AllTrails Map, because it branches off at a few points. About 1 mile in, you are able to take your dog off leash, until you finish the trail and are back at the 1 mile mark!! The trail itself had some beautiful sights along the way. Just beware, there are certain parts that are a little steep, there is little to no shade, and my GPS tracked me hiking 6.53 miles, not 5.9 miles. Overall, it is a great trail that I would recommend.

Scenic but a bit rocky and loose in spots.

Wonderful hiking area! I will return to explore other trails. However my GPS disagrees with the stated mileage - I clocked 7.6 miles.

I love this place

Easy but beautiful area.

Great exercise, but I don’t enjoy “hiking” through subdivisions on pavement. Went on a Tuesday morning in January and ran into at least 20 people. No thanks, I’ll pass.

Amazing views all around. Took the Rebel out and a friend took his tacoma and we went and checked out the trails for doghouse junction and it was pretty fun! Good crawling areas and fun times!

Not for the faint of heart! Most of it is uphill. Bring snacks and water!

I loved this area! Many different trails to choose from.

OK for San Diego, an escape from urban development. You don't need to be an "experienced adventurer" for this. Seriously? It's a county maintained road! Nothing particularly scenic beyond the view. No real trees, just scrubby bushes and dirt/rocks. Short steeps intermingled with flats and inclines. Broad gravel road (NOT paved as a hiker wrote below... wtf?) Bring ample fluids if biking up there (why is biking not included in the tags BTW?) Great views and a nice transition from the desert region to a higher, more alpine, desert ecosystem at the top. Big clouds of dust from passing trucks, and lots of evidence of illegal border crossers everywhere (backpacks, jackets, clothes, shoes, etc. off the road in the trails) Haven't gone through to the Pico RV park off Otay Lake Rd. yet, but will soon.

Amazing trail. Very clean. Took us 4hours to do the whole loop. Walking slow and having 5-7mins rests here and there. Great one!

Great area to explore. There are so many trails, very well marked. We ended up logging about nine miles before I had realized how far we'd hiked. I found this hike looking for interesting local trails and read about the Elfin Forest's haunted past. Great dog hike too.

Very enjoyable hike. Very well marked and easy to follow. It’s mostly gravel. The beginning is a steep climb up but very manageable. Beautiful views once you get up to the top.

Great workout!

Beautiful scenery everywhere, from the waterfall, to the lake and dam, to the breathtaking views. So much to see and several different trails. I did the trail to Lake Hodges lookout and then did the extra loop trail from there to get in the extra mile. Some great steep hills for cardio!
