The views were spectacular. Muddy in places but worth it. 2 hours and 9 minutes, with times to stop and take pictures. Just when you think you’re at the top, the climbing continues. A must hike, worth the view and so much much!
Great Trail, a little muddy after raining night before. Do it early to be able to park at top parking lot otherwise add some mileage and time to your trip
Short trail, but a fun one to start off the road to Hana!
This trail was beautiful. Muddy but fun a tad scary on the way down.
Beautiful hike. Dry but could be slick in rain. Panorama at the top of region.
My fave trail in maiu!!! The mud is worth it
Gorgeous!! A few muddy spots.
Went on the trail when it was dry - so this review is based on that. The trail was amazing. It's rated "hard" but don't let that deter you. It's more of a "medium." Also, the path is wide enough for 5 people to walk side by side. It's not as daunting as many people make it to be. There were several kids on the hike, several people wearing flip-flops and those who would otherwise not be considered hikers. It's an amazing trail - don't worry about what the other reviews say.
The best trail for the cross country runners!! 100% in the shade but no views.
The hike to the viewpoint to see the needle is short and a lovely view. But we opted to go off trail following the stream, which was so much more enjoyable.
Excellent hike. Hard with dramatic views, can be slippery and narrow in some areas but generally very enjoyable if you like tougher hikes. On a nice clear day it’s simply amazing. Don’t leave the island without doing this.
great hike!! best views of my life! at the top you get a 360 view of the island/ocean, amazing! muddy in spots but overall very well groomed trail. highly recommend waiting for a parking spot up top (not in the overflow parking - unless you want a 6+ mile, strenuous uphill) the start is a random steep paved path but leads you straight into paradise!
Great trail overall! 3.5 miles and the beginning can be heavily trafficked. Lots of rocks but awesome views! Bring water to at least have in the car when you get back, minimal shade.
Incredible views for the majority of the hike. Incline the whole way up, but totally worth it. Wear good shoes for the slippery rock as you get closer to the top.
Rocky walk, but if you stay along the ocean there are great views of the cliffs as you get closer to the lighthouse. Wear good shoes. You will be kicking rocks.
Your friends WILL complain. Looks like Jurassic park though. 10/10.
Loved This hike, but get there early as it gets busy. I was there by 7:30 and on my way back lots of families and couples were on their way out. Mostly flat - wear sneakers bring water and hat. There are some loose stones so be careful. But the views are gorgeous and it’s a fun way to see the lava fields.
Great!
Steep, but not too steep. It starts off relatively intense, but gives you enough breaks to make the whole thing manageable. The views are stunning and well worth the effort. The helicopters zipping around from time to time look like toys from the top.
AMAZING TRAIL. don't fall for it being "closed" there were dozens of people on this trail. don't listen to those saying you're disrespecting nature. the entire trail is blazed. I'm very conscious of nature and have been hiking for a while. I would never walk all over nature that doesn't have a blazed path. Be prepared, it is VERY muddy. It is straight out and back and is totally worth it. 1 hour in and 1 hour back.
Super windy today, but it made the hike a bit more tolerable with the breeze. Otherwise it’s a full on scorcher. This trail is not your typical hiking “trail”, it’s more like scaling boulders in some places. But definitely a fun challenge. Amazing views!!Although tiny from up top, we could actually see some Honu.
I loved this hike! But if you’re not wearing hiking or trail shoes and the trail is wet, be prepared for some challenging terrain (slippery to extremely slippery) not to mention ruined tennis shoes. Our family enjoyed it but I was the only one wearing proper trail shoes. Although my husband and teens kicked my butt on the way up; I felt great on the way down while they tentatively picked their path along the slippery terrain, (with a few muddy wipe outs.) Also, drive your car to the top of the trail head not the overflow parking lot or you’ll add another steep mile plus to your hike.
