HikingNo shade

Nice easy trail. The camping there was perfect and easy as well. I believe I camped overnight for free. It started getting warm quickly so I recommend doing the hike early in the day as there isn’t much shade.

Hiked today 4/14. Weather was in the high 30s with no wind which made for a great day to hike. Went around the soft road closure and hiked the road which added 2 miles to the hike. There is still a lot of snow around the lake but we did not need any special gear and the trail was clear up to that point. It was a beautiful hike.

A great hike this time of year! Some snow to trek through while climbing up, but seeing the frozen lake mid-April is quite the sight to behold. Bring hiking poles!

Great easy trail for a family with incredible views and rock formations. My 3.5-year-old could walk the whole thing with no problem, and there are plenty of fun (but not too scary) rocks to climb.

Easy trail, lots of families with kids. You can hike, bike or walk the dog. But don’t forget the bags.

Stunning. One of the most beautiful trails I've ever been on. The long hike is worth every second.

Went past soft close gate, parked at hard closed gate which added 3 miles and about 700 ft elevation. The road is well paved the whole way to trailhead. The last mile of the trail had lots of snow, but not impassable. Hiking poles are helpful. The lake is still frozen, but absolutely stunning views!

Hiked part of the Inyo Crater trail today (April 6, 2021). The entrance to the trailhead is currently closed. You can park on scenic loop road and it’s 1.25 miles to the trail head. A mix of hard packed snow, slush and water. Definitely requires waterproof shoes as we found ourselves shin deep at some points. I’ll add a map to show where we hiked. The craters are frozen over but still very cool and scenic!

Drove past soft close and parked at gate. From gate to Lone Pine Lake was 10.6 miles round trip with a 2,631’ elevation gain per the recording that didn’t load. We used spikes the last mile or so. Lake is frozen and beautiful. Tough hike with the added miles on the road from the gate but well worth it! @wanderingbrand

Completed 4/1/2021. Followed the advice of others on here and drove past the soft road close to the gate, parked, then walked the road to the trailhead. Absolutely beautiful hike with few other people. The first half is easy with some light snow on the trail. About a mile past the stream, the snow gets heavier. We had trekking poles which helped us make it to the lake, but spikes would’ve made some parts easier. Using the logs to cross the big stream when you’re almost at the lake was the hardest part - it took time to ensure we stepped on the log and not slip through thin snow. View was definitely worth it.

Easy beautiful hike. Some slight incline and decline on small gravel so not the best for people who need flat ground. Great with kids!

Amazing place! Did this on 3/29/2021 . I was the only person on the trail. An additional 2 mi+ has to be added to the trek as the road is closed before the parking spot. Suggest using Crampon's and hiking poles ( I didn't use one) as nearly 3.5 mi's of the trail is covered with snow that gets thicker as the trail advances. Due to the snow there are sections that are quite dangerous. One section about 3 mi from the trailhead, curves besides the creek can be very treacherous as there's little space to walk and no support to hold on to. Expect at least a half to a foot of snow especially from lake 2 to lake 3. Went up to lake 3. All the 3 lakes are frozen with lake 2 having a small unfrozen section. Trail is well defined, I was able to do it without a map. Trail head is at dead end of the asphalt road at the BigPine camp site. It starts with a beautiful view of the South Fork BigPine! and is a continuous climb from there on. It's shaded at sections. Temple Crag is amazing and seeing it towering above lake 2 is a sight to behold. It's beautiful to see it from lake 1 too.

Easy hike, good for small kids. No sun cover so bring sunblock. Some stairs, wear good shoes. Worth visiting. Don’t bring a stroller
